@whitbyjet65 Disagree. I drove a 2 litre Capri as my first car, I have owned a Capri 2.8i as a limited mileage classic for the last 17 years. I have modded the car extensively, it now produces 260+ Bhp & 292 ft lbs of torque. There was nothing wrong with the Capri, they just do not tolerate clumsy, hamfisted drivers with no feel- sadly, these characteristics are to be found in the majority of drivers. Too many idiots with no feel or ability are to blame-not the car.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Oh so your driving skills are superior to everyone elses then? Strange how most motoring journalists also describe the Capri's wet weather handling as abysmal. All I can say is, if you think the Capri handles well on wet roads, you must have driven some shite cars in your life. Don't get me wrong, I like the Capri but I'm not blind to its limitations.
@whitbyjet65 Actually, that is exactly right, my driving skills are better than the majority of driver's by virtue of the fact I have spent weeks being profesionally trained, unlike the majority who never do a day's additional training from the day they pass th driving test. Pleae do feel free to provide a quote from a motoring journalist that describes the car's handling in the wet as, 'abysmal.' Generally, the media had a very positive view of the car. ALL RWD cars have limitations in the wet.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH And why do you assume you're the only driver on the planet who has been professionally trained? Your supercilious demeanour is staggering. Autocar 1978 (C&P): 'corners and traction was very poor in the wet'. Ok they didn't use the word abysmal but maybe they were being polite. I also have an edition of Motor when they put a Capri head to head with a Mk1 Golf Gti. The Golf is light years ahead in every department.
@whitbyjet65 You asked me to quantify my initial comment by querying my driving experience. I answered your question & justified my opinion, hardly supercilious. Evidently you know little about the Capri, or the development of the 2.8i Injection. You have quoted an article from 1978- a whole THREE years before the 2.8i Capri was launched with completely revised suspension set up ie spring ratings & Bilstein gas dampers. There is no comparison between a 78 car and a 2.8i in terms of handling.
@whitbyjet65 I never issued a statement that implied I am the ONLY driver on the planet who has been professionally trained. We are however, a very small minority. Most will brake compulsively on the approach to a bend-just visit The Lake District and observe the vast majority of driver's do this when there is absolutely no necessity to do so. Most driver's floor it on straights & then brake excessively for bends, they frequently upset the balance of the car by doing so. They have little feel.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH But hey! If you think Capris are so good on the road, maybe that's a reflection of your ability behind the wheel. I suppose a slow, hopelessly outdated motor car WILL seem good to you. By the way, it takes more than a few weeks of lessons to become an expert driver. I suggest you're really just a boy racer with a fragile ego.
@whitbyjet65 Oh dear, you do take things VERY seriously don't you. Fragile ego perhaps?! lol Slow & hopelessly outdated? Feel free to bring along a tin box Golf R32 if you fancy your chances against a car which is far lighter & now punts out 292 ft lbs of torque at 3,500 rpm and over 260 Bhp. Ring up Rick Wood Motorsport & ask him about my car if you are so interested- converted to 3000cc, 7th injector fitted & turbo charged. 0-60 in the very low 5 second region. Cheerio! :)
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Oh!!! So what you have ISN'T a Capri 2.8i. You actually have a much modified Capri. Why? Because the Capri in its original guise is hopelessly slow & outdated. Thanks for comfirming my point. Who said I drive a Golf??? I never said that!
@whitbyjet65 Grow up mon ami. If you regard a car that was launched 30 years ago with a 0-60 time of 7.9 seconds and a top end nigh on 130 mph as, 'Hopelessly slow & outdated,' what do you drive? A Ferrari? I suspect not. It was one of the the quickest road cars of the day, and it is more than capable of keeping up with modern traffic, that is the only point that is relevant. It hardly qualifies as a Model T Ford does it? The motoring press loved the 2.8i as a general rule for it's handling!
@whitbyjet65 I have no intention of making any further disclosure re the nature my professional driving qualifications, or how I utilise them on a daily basis on a public forum. Suffice to say I have being using them for over fourteen years without incident. I know this for a fact, the vast majority of drivers have little, or no grasp of what their car is actually capable of. Just observe how MOST driver's comfort brake on the approach to bends when there is no necessity to do so- very poor.
My next door neighbour has one, spent a fortune on a full restoation of the bodywork, looks stunning! He's just finishing off the mechanicals at the mo.
@Annihilator1111 WRONG. Capri production ceased at Halewood & Dagenham in 78 when the MK3 replaced the Mk2. ALL MK3 Capris were built in Germany- Cologne & Saarlouis & Belgium- Genk. Better luck next time!
it goes like what ..........WHAT DOSE IT GO LIKE ............. I also like the part at 0:08 hes cuming as hes talking.....but other than that great car i got a mk3 :D
Best advert for a car in my opinion, I bought my 2.8 injection in 1987 it is my first car and I still have it.Sounds gorgeous with the Stainless steel Janspeed exhaust system with the branched manifolds.I don't think I will ever want to sell it.Nice to see lots of positive comments here.
The Ford Focus seems to be the 'Must have Ford' today. It's a car for people that don't really like cars but buy one cos everyone else has one!! Wouldn't take one for nothing. Fords are ugly now! They don't stand out like the Capri or early Escorts did. Even the Sierra was a head-turner back in the day! XR3! XR3! XR3!
It's a shame the Capri lost it in the latter years of it's life, but with hot hatches chewing at it's coat tails, and the competition outwitting it for performance/class/equipment/space etc it was sort of inevitable.
Use 1:100 (1%) two stroke oil in your tank to prevent tank and engine corrosion if you use the modern aggressive fuel that contain 5-10% methanol (not good for the old engine and fuel system materials!)
@TheDarkVII The chap who directed the first film got his start in pop videos and commercials, so it's possible he directed this - the IMDB doesn't list adverts though.
0-60 in 7.8 seconds is quick even today. Anything doing it in under 6 is supercar fast and anything doing it in 6 is very fast but anything doing it in 7 has to be regarded as quick. The 2.8i is a quick car simple as and while hot hatches will outrun it today and be quicker round the corners none of them will have as much fun as they would in a 2.8i capri. Plus wack a turbo on it and you'll be waving goodbye to most hot hatches lol
It's quite astonishing to me to think that as a kid I sweated this car - (0-60 in 7.8 seconds!). Wow. Your average Focus will do the same thing today! Cars and performance have come a long way!
In 1981, the Capri was playing out the string. It was an older model, looked just like the Mk2, which itself looked like a Mk1. It was known as being somewhat unreliable and something of a rustbox but it still looked fast and gave the impression of being fast. I can see why I liked it!
The average Ford Focus does NOT hit 60 mph in 7.9 seconds-not by a long chalk. The Mk3 Capri has a very different, more aggressive look than the soft Mk2 cars. You cannot say that a 2.8i looks like a Mk2 because it has totally different trim, a different front end & front spoiler, no chrome, different stance due to lowered suspension settings & wider rubber. The MK2 looks totally dfferent from the Mk1. Nor is the Mk3 a 'rustbox,' far from it. In 1981, the 2.8i WAS fast-simple as.
The Mk1 to Mk2 was quite a difference but clearly the lines were well carried over. The Mk3 was, and looked like, an update to the Mk2. It was obviously much improved. I was being facetious about comparing it to a new Focus but the performance difference is not all that huge. The Mk2 primarily had a reputation as a rustbox (although no worse than contemporary competitors) and the Mk3 was much better in this regard. They'll always have a special place in my heart and I would have loved one!
Paul, I have owned my 2.8i as a dry weather use classic for nigh on 16 yrs. I have enlarged the engine to 3,000cc & fitted a new Turbo Technics system & seventh injector. Uprated brakes, poly bushed suspension, uprated gearbox with tweaked ratios to match those of the 4 speed box- 230 Bhp & 282 lbs ft of torque-BIG FUN. Like ANY rear wheel drive car with plenty of poke, the rear end can be hairy if abused. Traction control is down to ones right foot. Most Capris were crashed by CRAP drivers!
No, I hae not posted any video footage on YT. Two reasons, firstly, I have no footage! Secondly, I prefer not to advertise! However, buy the back issue of Classic Ford magazine from July 2009, and you might just see my car featured in the mag! ;). Send me your email add & I will send you some pics.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Update- following visit to Ric Wood Motorsport, a fault with the seventh injector-which had never operated(!) resulted in 265 BHP & 292 lbs ft of torque being achieved-monstrous! :)
I've had 6 Capri's, Great Cars, I've always worked on them & know pretty much every nut & bolt within:-) If you have a 2.8i & want more speed but aren't bothered about cornering, just straight line speed, one of the best ways of doing it without doing anything to the engine is to change the Axle (Or LSD if you have a Special) & replace it with a 2.0 axle:-) They have a higher final drive than the 2.8 axles & LSD's so you'll get a higher top speed;-) Oh but be sure to fit an axle location kit too
Stunning ignorance on your behalf. The MK I3 Capris were built in Germany at Cologne & Genk. They were well built cars & by no means rot boxes. Perhaps that is why my car which is 25 yrs old has it's original front wings, sills, bonnet, tailgate & rear arches that have never seen a welders torch, or a hint of Isopon P38 filler! lol Another YT 'expert' hey??!
Dagenham - I recall thats where Ford made the Cortina, Sierra and Fiesta...
As for Capri, between 1976 and 1986 it was only built in Germany, and curiously was a 'captive import' to the UK, esp being that from 1984 onward, RHD models only were being built, all specifically as exports to Britain!
What a ridiculous statement. Talk about generalisation & stereotyping. Just shows how easily led some people are by media BS. Perhaps you should research the type of owners these cars have these days. Many professional people own them as 'Toys.' I have owned mine for 15 yrs, I am a middle class professional & I don't do stickers on the top of the windscreen. I know a barrister who has a conours E-Type, concours Austin Healey & he also owns a concours 2.8i Special- Essex boy?! Don't think so....
its an essex boy car all the way, saw a programme about dagenham on bbc the other day and even they reinforced it. Its like the old toyota mr2 being a hairdressers car, or rovers being an old mans car. Ford capris will always be for wayne and sharon from southend.
You must have been watching a different programme to the one I saw then. The Capri wasn't even built in Dagenham. Initially it was built at Halewood-Mk1 & Mk2 in the UK. The Germans built the Mk3 at Saarlouis & Cologne. Your comment is ridiculous, it is a rash generalisation & based on ignorance. It is as foolish as trying to argue that anyone who drives a Ford of any type is a wearer of white socks! Outdated drivel frankly........
Essex Boys! Nothing but a bunch of cheap sounding tossers with shell suits, fury dice, cheap tacky accessories & go faster stickers! They're the reason the Capri has the reputation it has & I hate them for it! Stick to your Escort Cabrio's you bunch of eal eating cocky cocks!!!
These stereotypes exist in the minds of narrow minded people such as yourself. You obviously like to generalise about everything & pigeonhole everyone & everything. Pathetic really. Again, I will direct you to my comment about the people who own these cars today. Many are owned by middle class people-NOT people called 'Wayne' with a penchant for Tattoo's and girls called Tracey. Get a grip & pull your head out your arse.
well maybe not now, the people that drove these cars have moved onto things like subaru imprezas and ill agree that many good condition capris are most likely owned by collectors. But stereotypes develop for pretty good reason, remember the first shape toyota mr2, aka the 'hairdressers' car.
Again, that is such a generalised remark, "The people that drove these cars have moved onto things like Subaru Imprezas." Says who? You? You have NO evidence to support your comment, it merely highlights how you generalise & stereotype. It suits you to try & argue such a point because you are determined to maintain that Capris were driven by brash, low rent people-you could not be more wrong. Clearly, you are very easily influenced by media BS.I guess ALL BMW drivers really are tossers then??!
I've got a 2.8i Special now and don't think it's that fast. Don't get me wrong I love it but my 205 was just as quick. Need to sort out a 24v cossie for it... :)
Your right, they were restricted to 127. Still that was fast enough for it's time lol The only cars that blew you away then were Golf GTi's haha. Drive a Volvo now but still got the Special upgraded from the 3.0 JPS haha those were the days
as i kid in the 1980's, i really wanted one of these. the bloke next door to my parents brought one brand new on a 86 c plate, and he still has it to this day, lol. he's had other cars since but says he can't part with it and he will often get people ask him if he will sell it.
0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. LoL, how times have changed. The FG F6 Falcon has been clocked doing 0 - 100km/h in 4.82s. Even the normally aspirated FG Falcon would probably accelerate to 100 quicker than 7.8
Ah! A man with a soul!! :) Well said! Modern cars have little or no asthetic appeal for the most part these days. Very efficient, very well built & the charisma of a blank piece of A4 paper! Stick your modern cars........My everyday tool is a BMW Tourer, I have owned a near concours 2.8i Injection for nearly 15 yrs as a toy. The engine has been bored & stroked with a 24V Cossie crank & I have fitted a new Turbo Techniques system- 280 ft lb of torque at 3,500 rpm= BIG FUN! :)
Owned an 83 2.8 Injection, from the power bulge in the bonnet, to the funky hazard warning switch, the motorised ariel which shot up when you turned on the radio, no ABS, no TC, no EPS nothing -- just a great drive 'cept in the wet with that lighter than light rear end stepped out (scary)- Jeez takes me back
i have been looking for this advert for years as it is my father who was driving the car in the advert if any one has the origonal footage can you please contact me
Guess what - for once you are right. The Ford Cologne only has 160BHP but anyone who knows about cars will tell you that the Cologne V6 has shitloads of torque. And in performance terms that is much more important that outright HP
You are a typical youtube twat always banging on about BHP.
He says - 'It has ultra low profile tyres on wide alloy wheels...It has a 2.8 litre fuel injected engine, built by Ford...and it goes like... (lo va, como...)
There is then a lightening noise to sound like a very fast thing!
It has also low profile tyres in wide-(¿able?), (¿double?) all wheels. It has a two point eight liter fuel injection engine. It´s build by Ford and It goes like.... ¿Can someone tell me what exactly says this advert?, I´m spanish and I don´t understand exactly what it says. Thank´s.
Loved the Capri's, I had a 1979 MKIII white 3 litre S with black vinyl roof in the early 80's registration LGA 4V and then moved onto the 2.8 injection.
I love the old ads...what happened to them? The bloke with the deep voice telling you about the NCAP safety rating, and the way it all focused on the curves of the car instead of cheeky 2 minute stings about something totally random that your impressed with the cgi for about 5 minutes? U wana see the curves and make it look blistering so you can go down the pub and tell your mates ''How wikid does that car look" THATS advertising.
Superb advert for an awesome car. I have a 280 Brooklands which is part of the family although I don't have my wifes permission to say so!! Thanks for posting this film.
love it - got a copy of the magazine ad with the lightning and "Goes Like ..." Haha - like the way they say top speed AROUND 130mph - rounding up must have been a sales technique. Still, it beats "The Vauxhall Viva GT is a dollyrocket and can reach 50mph in..."
And handles like... er... erm!!!

lukemull 2 years ago
The 7th injector fires directly into the plenum chamber, as opposed a single cyclinder.

WHY is there not a you tube video of this car it sounds awesome. I must see it. Are you on any of the forums??
brooklandscapri 1 year ago
No, I hae not posted any video footage on YT. Two reasons, firstly, I have no footage! Secondly, I prefer not to advertise! However, buy the back issue of Classic Ford magazine from July 2009, and you might just see my car featured in the mag! ;). Send me your email add & I will send you some pics.

You cant get a 2.8 laser they were injection or injection special, 280 brooklands or tickford

when iwas about 6 years old my dream car was a black 2.8 lazer. At the time this car was just so cool when everything else was totally bland and boxy
paulhunter123 3 years ago
shocking car built for essex boys. Did ford supply the sticker saying 'wayne and tracey' for the top of the windscreen?
trigga1uk 3 years ago
They forgot to mention in the video you could buy them from Ford with rot and oils leaks as standard.
cupcakeflake 3 years ago
Stunning ignorance on your behalf. The MK I3 Capris were built in Germany at Cologne & Genk. They were well built cars & by no means rot boxes. Perhaps that is why my car which is 25 yrs old has it's original front wings, sills, bonnet, tailgate & rear arches that have never seen a welders torch, or a hint of Isopon P38 filler! lol Another YT 'expert' hey??!
LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH 2 years ago 2
Knowing what some owners would subject the cars to it somehow wouldn't be surprising!
Intriguingly, nearly all Capris made in Germany from 1984 onwards were exported to the UK...
joh2 3 years ago
WHAT??
How do u explain Dagenham Motors then??
SonyShots 3 years ago

LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH 2 years ago
its an essex boy car all the way, saw a programme about dagenham on bbc the other day and even they reinforced it. Its like the old toyota mr2 being a hairdressers car, or rovers being an old mans car. Ford capris will always be for wayne and sharon from southend.
trigga1uk 2 years ago
You must have been watching a different programme to the one I saw then. The Capri wasn't even built in Dagenham. Initially it was built at Halewood-Mk1 & Mk2 in the UK. The Germans built the Mk3 at Saarlouis & Cologne. Your comment is ridiculous, it is a rash generalisation & based on ignorance. It is as foolish as trying to argue that anyone who drives a Ford of any type is a wearer of white socks! Outdated drivel frankly........
LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH 2 years ago
Essex Boys! Nothing but a bunch of cheap sounding tossers with shell suits, fury dice, cheap tacky accessories & go faster stickers! They're the reason the Capri has the reputation it has & I hate them for it! Stick to your Escort Cabrio's you bunch of eal eating cocky cocks!!!
drewerz01 2 years ago
lol someone jealous of fords reputation? haha
CRF250RGUY 2 years ago
These stereotypes exist in the minds of narrow minded people such as yourself. You obviously like to generalise about everything & pigeonhole everyone & everything. Pathetic really. Again, I will direct you to my comment about the people who own these cars today. Many are owned by middle class people-NOT people called 'Wayne' with a penchant for Tattoo's and girls called Tracey. Get a grip & pull your head out your arse.
LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH 2 years ago
well maybe not now, the people that drove these cars have moved onto things like subaru imprezas and ill agree that many good condition capris are most likely owned by collectors. But stereotypes develop for pretty good reason, remember the first shape toyota mr2, aka the 'hairdressers' car.
trigga1uk 2 years ago

pug205er 3 years ago
Your right, they were restricted to 127. Still that was fast enough for it's time lol The only cars that blew you away then were Golf GTi's haha. Drive a Volvo now but still got the Special upgraded from the 3.0 JPS haha those were the days

0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. LoL, how times have changed. The FG F6 Falcon has been clocked doing 0 - 100km/h in 4.82s. Even the normally aspirated FG Falcon would probably accelerate to 100 quicker than 7.8
These older ads are more appealing.

Toxcity666 3 years ago 12
LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH 2 years ago
@Toxcity666 This car was built using computers. Many of them. Hell even 70s beetles were.

JPacheco91 4 years ago
Hey JPacheco91 -
Guess what - for once you are right. The Ford Cologne only has 160BHP but anyone who knows about cars will tell you that the Cologne V6 has shitloads of torque. And in performance terms that is much more important that outright HP
You are a typical youtube twat always banging on about BHP.
