I live for more then 2 years by the grace of God alone. I don't worry about money, clothing, food or a place to sleep for I have none.
If God wants it he will make a palmtree shoot up next to you. Why then should I worry? The earth tells us we need to aquire material things to be happy. I tell you you need a good spirit to be happy. And God in Heaven is good and God is spirit.
Peace be with you all and don't worry, you will be seen after.
Amen! He mentions alot about loving and basically being Jesus to people. That's what Jesus is, love. That's what we are called to be. God calls us not to hang out with the "popular" people..remember Jesus' life? he hung out with rejects and prostitutes and drunks and tax collectors. This is God, this is what calling ourselves Christ followers is, this is who we are called to be.
I'm currently working on my doctorate in economics at perhaps the foremost school in the world -- University of Chicago. I've been on mission trips throughout the world. Just because you've been on mission trips does not make you an expert economist. I admire his zeal for helping the poor, but he blatantly ravages Scripture of its historical and literary context. This is not only deceptive, but the Bible strictly forbids it. It's right there at the end of Revelation.
Did you mean to reply to my post? I was pointing out the teaching on being judged on how you judge by another user's critical approach to Shane's sermon on the mount reading!
I wouldn't be saying that he's giving a bad sermon. He's verbatim quoting Jesus' sermon on the mount.
And yes, Jesus' economics clashes EXTREMELY harshly with anything that'll be taught in any economics class (as an undergrad in econ). And, once again, these are Jesus' words. Shane isn't interpreting anything; he's only reading from the bible. If you have a problem with this sermon then you have a problem with Jesus.
I think you need to re-read what I wrote, bub. I think all of you are completely misunderstanding a few basic things. What Jesus said regarding economics has nothing to do with the government and welfare checks. It has to do with our own personal relationships and giving to our brothers. You people remind me of Job's friends.
Jesus was indeed talking about worldly economics as much as spiritual. The language of the Sermon on the Mount is that of Jubilee language - the same language found throughout the Gospel(s). Jesus was calling for the exercising of the Jubilee (leaving the land fallow on the Sabbath year, which would indeed have economic consequences - "don't worry about what you eat . . . ") Check out the Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder on this - interesting stuff.
"Don't worry about what you eat..." supports my argument much more than it does yours. Shane Claiborne advocates socialism. This involves government planning on an international level. How is this less "storing up in barns" than the invisible hand of the free market?
socialism? He's more into anarchism I would say. Or if you'd call the first church of acts socialism, het be a socialist. But Claiborne isn't very keen on trusting 'Caesar'...
You seem to take for granted one thing because you've created a false dilemma. You assume that a) the poor are better taken care of in a socialist economy (find me a single case of this not being true and I'll show you a green dog) and b) that Jesus telling us to take care of the orphans and widows somehow involved big government and nationalized planning. Nowhere in the Gospels is it suggested that Jesus fed the poor through the "generosity" of the government. WE are the body. The govt isn't...
How can you say that this is deceptive? How can you say that the Bible forbids this? All that is said in this clip is the Bible, all that Shane is saying is Jesus' Sermen On The Mount. By saying that this is deceptive, and forbidden, it is shown to me that you are denying what is said through this sermen.
The Scripture I was referring to him ravaging has nothing to do with this video. Read "Irresistible Revolution" and look up the Scripture he cites as you go. You'll see EXACTLY what I'm referring to. He takes for granted that some people will actually look up his citations and put them into context.
Could you please post some of the comments you are referring to? You write so intelligently, yet you are argumentative and abusive. PLEASE be careful - we cannot serve both God and money. You could be a great man for God!
This guy is a nutcase. While he makes some good points convicting the modern day evangelical church of failing to help the needy, he pretends that socialism is "God's economy". God tells us to use our talents, not to fail to use any and all logic.
Jesus? Yeah, what a nutcase....Ooftyman, do you realize Shane is reading The Sermon On The Mount? Sigh. It's really too bad Jesus gets such a bad rap due to the ignorance of some of his followers. It just gives people like Bill Maher more to make fun of.
I'm not talking about the Sermon on the Mount. I'm talking about his whole ministry in general. In his book, he buddies up to people like Malcolm X and Che Guevara. Yeah...
You should probable try reading his book....he buddies up with folks like Dorothy Day and Martin Luther King Jr --and worked alongside Mother Teresa. What have you done?
Only 5 comments on this... I have been viewing all sorts of garbage all over youtube and seeing thousands of comments. When the words of Jesus are read and only 5 people respond what am I to say?
I say AMEN to His Word and wait for his return. Based on only 5 comments it will probably be soon...
When Billy Graham was asked, "What is God like?" Bill answered, "Take a long, long, hard look at Jesus." My opinion is, when God walked in the flesh of Jesus Christ and shared this sermon, God was revealing to us exactly God. Dispite the complaints then and now, the religious people, the churches, his own family, and all theologians that cast him out, God words last forever. "The grass will wither, and the flowers will fade, but the word of the Lord lasts forever." 8D
The First words being "Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God."NIV In the NLT the first words are more accurately translated as Jesus saying, "Blessed are those that recognize their need for me, for theirs is the kingdom of God." "Gods Word is simple enough a child can see, and deep enough a theologian will drown in it."
It is the best and first sermon ever shared! The Joy of the Lord is your strength Neh 8:10

It is funny how some people think that this is about socialism or capitalism, when it is all really about taking care of each other.

If you think Shane Claiborne wants to solves the worlds problems through government, then you are CLEARLY off track in his theology.

No, there is no invisible hand of the free markets. Those who control the markets make sure that they will get more money.
