It is possible, but sudden tempo & octave changes are a bit more difficult. You can prerecord something into the RC50, then switch to that new phrase when desired. Another way: stop one part, and play a new, real time guitar riff in its place. If you want a song entirely build on loops, have 1 channel drums, the 2nd one bass, and the 3rd guitar. Then start/stop the phrases, to create your verse chorus verse dynamic. Harmonies upon phrases add a good dynamic too. Did that answer your question?
@mybabybluues you're right... I should have said "baby baby baby." or "Friday Friday Friday." Then I would have won hahahahaha. Seriously though, I appreciate that you took the time to listen. It means a lot. Regardless if you like it or not. Check out some of my other songs/videos. I have 3 albums out. This video is simply a tutorial on how to use the looping machine.
l take it you're high or have A.D.D. like me. It was funny to watch you try to figure out what to play next. Check out some of my pooping clinic videos. U should dig the main video as well. Pretty trippy, which looks like you can appreciate.
did you have to set the tempo ahead of time? I use an RC-2 for very simply guitar loops... saw some guys doing multiple tracks on the RC50, so I bought one, but...
I hit the pedal, it records, I hit the pedal again and it WAITS a few millisec, it does not play back at the instant I hit the pedal, it waits for the next beat that it has in quantization... so how to do you make it ignore its internal metronome? any tips apprec'd, thanx, keep rockin' mate!
@HarrrySpider crazy...? I didn't set the tempo ahead of time, I just jumped right in. However, the RC50 does take some time to figure out how it "thinks." Also, you have to sync you hands and feet. That's the biggest beast to battle. I have had similar issues such as the one you speak of, but to avoid it, I simply redid my loop until it was seamless. Once I'm at home, I'll check out what my settings are and I'll shoot those to you. Maybe that'll help. Keep at it though man. It's a great machine.
I just bought my Boss RC50. When I plug my dynamic microphone into the mic socket and connect my headphones to practise, I'm getting this humming sound. However, if I connect the Right (Mono), output to a small speaker amp ( which isn't actually switched on...just plugged into the mains), and still using the headphones connected to the RC50, I get no humming sound. Does anybody know what's going here? Thanks.
hey you, nice stuff. i'm thinking about buying the RC 50. QUESTION: can you fade in and out the volume of the single phrases? that might be important to me... thanx for answering!
Most audience members who don't like live loopers have a somewhat short attention span. It took you over 3 minutes to build your loop, which in radio-land, is an eternity. Most also don't like the repetitious techno-like feel to traditional loopers. I like your creativity.
Yoh dude. I've had the rc 20 for a wile now and just got the Rc 50. normally I'm not into the whole dance scene but I found myself glued to you video. Really really enjoyed it. Loved the idea with the delay on the mike. Proper original. You worked the phrase's ace and the drumming was tops. Wicked!!!
hey man, definitely not hating, I was feeling the jam, but I'd prefer hearing more instrumental, do some more with that guitar plz. Maybe throw a 2 bar melody over top your looping beat on one of the 4 channels so you can drop it for any sort of "chorus"
Great stuff. I have an RC20 but I'm already jonesing for a 50...
My timing's pretty terrible (as shown up by the RC20!) and I like the idea of being able to do a short rhythm loop on one loop and a longer musical loop and have them all sync up. Plus there's the XLR mic input too.

Hey cronkite, i want to buy a loop station but i dont know if i should buy the rc 20xl or the rc 50, do you know the principal differences? anybody knows?
Happy to help. To my understanding, the RC50 allows you more sample time and another patch to add loops on. The RC20 is definitely half the price, but half the options. I suppose the big decider will depend on what you want to use the pedal for. Since I do the 'one man band' thing, I need that extra patch and sample time for builds and such. But if you're using it with a full band, the RC50 may not apply. I suggest the 50, only because you never know when you need the extra bells and whistles.
CORRECTION: When I said "the RC50 allows you more sample time and another patch to add loops on...." I didn't mean "patch," I meant "PHRASE." Man... I really need to be looking at the RC50, when I answer these things
Thank JW. The support is greatly appreciated. I'm sure you can order an RC50 on line, but I purchased mine at Guitar Center. There are a few other loop pedals on the market (like the 'Boomerang' and the 'JamMan'), but I prefer the Boss brand. I've been making music for as long as I can remember, and all my Boss gear is still fully operational. The RC50 is built like a tank too, so that's always a plus. They cost around $500 and I think they're well worth the money. Thank for the question.
Here's what I do to record directly into a PC/MAC:
Plug a 1/4 inch into the mono output of the RC50. Then go into either an interface box or simply a 'direct-in' built into the computer. I'm pretty sure all new mac laptops have a built in interface/direct-in, located next to the headphone jack. The input looks the same as the headphone input, but has a different icon identifying it.
Hope this helped. Let me know if it didn't. Take care.
@cronkitesatellite - hey bud , nice job. I am an avid looper myself, but for recording, I HIGHLY suggest not using the built in sound card (which would negate the "direct in") . Interfaces for mac that connect via firewire or PC via PCI internal or USB ( I am a PC guy myself) work way better and this way you can customize a lot more. I record a lot with my Delta 1010 sound card and use a mackie 1402 as my pre's.
My looping setup - Im relegated to a Line6 M13 and that only gives me technically 56 seconds of loop time, and I have managed to come up with some seriously cool loops! RC50 looks bad ass, I have a RC20 but use it as a phrase sampler (got it in a trade) so maybe upgrading to this would be good and use the m13 only for effects. :) Great vid man. I have some basic stuff posted as well nothing too crazy in regards to looping, but fun nonetheless.
@zumbigod Thanks. This is one of the best comments I've ever received. I just got an RC-300. I really need to make a new video. This one is old and I've learned a ton more since this was made. Regardless, thanks for the sage wisdom. It did not fall on deaf ears.
@cronkitesatellite - right on man! How do you feel the 300 is in comparison to the others by boss? Im not a fan of the jam man or boomerang. I ended up using the line6 for effects but its really nice having that looping, because I can pick pre/post effects on the loops...I have an undo, but not multilayered..thats what I really want. And then just run effects accordingly. I LOVE LOOPING though! Its created a whole new world of music for me these last 10 years or so that I have been doing it! :)
@zumbigod Truth be told, I haven't used the RC-300 yet. I currently live in the middle east and I ordered the 300 through amazon today. Now I play the waiting game. The effects seem limited, but I don't really want to much. Hey, do you know much about AKAI MPC's? I'm having one hell of a time trying to get my MPC 500 to save a sample. Those pads, plugged into my loopstation is all I need to enter the next level of looping... I just gotta get this thing to save a freakin' sample!!
Ill have to look into it, Im not too savvy with any mpc units persay. Ive messed with em in the past but in my almost 20 yrs of guitar playing, Im no longer in a band now, so I can concentrate on ME and what I want to do. MPC is a great route for what you are trying to do. You might want to look into Ableton Live Software as well. Its essentially the same concept just digital and you have a TON more space. then you just need to get some sort of foot/pad(?) controller and you are golden.
I plan on going the ableton route and trying to come up with a mobile live band..I still jam with my buddy from africa (from those vids) but our new songs are WAYYY better. thats some older covers I posted, of practice and random jams, etc. but Thats what makes you a better player! :) Our first new tune is here - link in next comment cuz youtubes is retarded...The next new tune I am still mixing currently and song 3 starts this weekend. Friend me on fb as well , thats where most of my songs are posted in general. or you can just follow on soundcloud. Have you set up a soundcloud account yet? they are pretty dope!
Here's a great question from spacemanGoldie. Apparently, when I tried to hit "Reply," I must have hit "Remove." Here the question:
Hi Cronkite, I just bought one of these so I don't have to hire another guitarist. Can I prerecord guitar rhythms - store them - and bring them in mid song whilst I solo?
Can I send one of the stereo outs to a separate amp? Or would you use an external mixing desk? The manual isn't very clear unfortunately, thanks
The RC50 has over 20 minutes of sampling time. You can record whatever you want on your 3 PHRASE banks, as long as you don't run out of time. If you choose to have a pre-recorded octave/timing change, the easiest way to do that is to copy one of the cheesy PRESETS at the beginning of the PATCHES to a new PATCH and place your own sampling over their preset. Yes, you can send one of the outs to an amp. I've only stuck with mono though. Hope this helped. Let me know if you have any more questions.
The RC-50 only has one xlr, one 1/4, and one 1/8 input. However, if you run a channel mixer through one of those preexisting RC-50 inputs, you can GREATLY increase your input options. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm always glad to help.

Excuse my language but,...Fucking Hell...that was fantastic!. This really has to be the best loop station video I've seen. It makes a change not to see someone showing us how fast they can scale up and down the fretboard of an electric guitar. Great percussive sounds indeed. Great improvisation. Nice one cronki.
Okay, so I am simply amazed and envy you right now!! One question... How did you run the two mics into the 'loop station'? I see mixing boards to your left. Do you have to plug the mics in there, and then run out from the mixing boards? Let me know, thanks, and keep it up!
Your support is truly appreciated!! I still have much to learn though:
I only have one mic running into the RC50 (loop station). The other mic goes through the mixer/speaker to my left. I cannot loop that mic. The mic that runs through the RC50 is plugged into it via 1/4 inch input (because of the guitar effect pedal that connects the mic to the RC50). In the future, I hope to attach a mixer to the RC50 and increase the inputs capabilities of the RC50. I hope this helped. Let me know my friend.
Awesome dude! I'm also one of those guys who play many different instruments, none of them really good though. The possibilities of the RC-50 are really amazing. Looks like a lot of fun.
you have me laughing histerically, and im sure u understand how much i appreciate this video.. this is as good as Rico Loops, ive been saving up for a few months for this pedal.. ur having so much fun man, i see it
sweet dude, I do a similar thing with a boss 20xl connected to a soundboards subgroup or aux to play several instruments in a song. The vid I got up now isn't good. But I got one vid with a loop and a harp thats ok.
pure joy. did like the whole set up. thing is great mostly because it is so universal. man, your rhytm feel is really strong. i do a lot of amibient stuff, but the vibe is essential. it was a pleasure to watch.
Excellent use of the RC-50! I do pretty much the same thing and I fucking love it. Because really, who needs a band when you have an RC-50...
And I must say, it is ridiculous how people don't understand how looping works. I was at an open mic in Florida and this guy was doing some looping on an RC-20 and all these dumb fuck rednecks were like, "Man, I didn't come here to watch no cd being played." It's called looping you dipshits!
I think that's a bit harsh regarding people who don't understand what "Looping" is. I like the RC50 but you still can't beat a bloody good band line-up.
Yup, I think I just found you on soundcloud... it's pretty awesome. I'm listening to "Not on my life." That's some real shit man! Well done.

The RC50 has over 20 minutes of sampling time. You can record whatever you want on your 3 PHRASE banks, as long as you don't run out of time. Can I send one of the stereo outs to a separate amp? Or would you use an external mixing desk? The manual isn't very clear unfortunately, thanks

Looks like a lot of fun.

sweet dude, I do a similar thing with a boss 20xl connected to a soundboards subgroup or aux to play several instruments in a song.

DocMaple8.
I think that's a bit harsh regarding people who don't understand what "Looping" is. I like the RC50 but you still can't beat a bloody good band line-up.
Regards.
