Beethoven said about this movement that it describes the dead of Napoleon himself after he had died.

I often think about how there must have been tens of thousands of soldiers if not more during the First and Second World Wars; Germans, Russians, Americans, Brits, & Frrench who loved this movement and who knew they were most likely going to die very unpleasantly- how personal this movement must've been to them since Beethoven had himself dedicated it to French soldiers who had died because of Napoleon's relentless lust for war.

Pour moi, c'est sa plus belle exécution : Ils savent que la guerre est perdue et jouent cette marche funèbre comme ils ne la joueront plus en 1952 dans l'enregistrement dit de référence.
