They did other "communication gap" bits like this. Simon Soundman showed up in a music store in another clip, and he was also in Charlie's Restaurant. There was the one where Maria could only speak Spanish, and she kept yelling "agua" to David, and he kept giving her everything but water. They could also have Linda, the deaf character, coming into a store signing, and the clerk keeps bringing her the wrong thing.
@cavalierfan1995 I always knew the cha-ching sfx meant "pay" for your saw. But that's Simon Soundman for ya'. One of my favorite lines in this sketch.
Simon at his best again - this clip, the one with him in the music store, and one where he sings about the cat in the tree are my three Simon favorites!
Luckily Simon Soundman got the saw like he wanted.
The cashier also imitated the sound of the cash register opening like Simon Soundman's imitations of all kinds of things, and therefore Simon Soundman thanked him for all the help of finding his saw.
if you enjoy this, and Monty Python, look up 'the two ronnies: fork handles'

Man, Jim Henson sure loved playing those large lavender live hand Muppet characters didn't he?

the storekeeper is a soundman at the end.

@sideslide23 Only difference is he does it with verbs and not nouns like Simon.

@sha11235
That is a very interesting difference! Thank you for pointing it out to us!

Simon? I thought his name was Sam?

I love it when he identifies what he wants by making the sound of it instead of naming it. That's so cute.

Can I have this storekeeper's theme music when I own a store?

Sir, you forgot to (cha-ching!) for your saw.
Or as any cashier would remind a customer in real life: "Sir, you forgot to pay for your saw."

Was Simon Soundman a way to emphasize disability? Because people occasionally had trouble understanding him, and when they did they play on it a lot.

I think it is pretty neat too! It must be close to forty years old!

I love how the character Simon Soundman does what kids like to do: make sounds. Good child psychology in action.
Beldamshadow 2 years ago
And it allows the viewers to identify the items that the sounds go with.
gameshowguy2000 2 years ago
Some of my favorite childhood times were spent talking in sounds, in imitation of Simon Soundman - particularly during long car trips.
Did you know, there's a bird that imitates sounds just like Simon does - the lyre bird. Its imitation is flawless.

Here's a good one. Quite funny and amusing. The image is a bit blurry, though.

I was wondering when I'd see this again. I'm guessing this is your copy.
I just saw it on the official SS site a week ago.

Check out Monty Python's Cheese Shop sketch to see a shopping trip precisely as difficult, if not more so.

I loved that sketch, and yes, I did watch it in the DVDs section.

I'm noticed that early Sesame Street used that opening music more than once, like when Cookie and Ernie come dancing in during the hat in a box skit.
LeftSock09 2 years ago
That's one of my favorite sketches. The vaudevillian style entrance Cookie and Ernie do with that music at the beginning just sells it =D
