Who would have thought when I used to avidly watch this as a teenager in the mid 70s, that different people would be typing on keyboards all round the world and conversing on a thing called Youtube about it ?
I was never lucky enough to have met the "guvnor" but, like a lot of his fans I felt I knew him and its a silly thing to say but I miss him like he was a member of my own family !
One of the very best!! And Barker was always extremely humble about his talent. Notice he never mentions that he wrote big chunks of this series himself. A true Comic Genius. We miss you Ronnie, R.I.P.
The Porridge series 1 dvd that this interview was taken from was released in Ovtober 2001, so I would guess either earlier that year or maybe late 2000
Ronnie barker was brilliant . You can really see the influence he had on peter kay

Porridge is the best comedy show ever. It should be Sir Ronnie Barker, he was just so great.

"it was in the writing...i just had to play it" speaks volumes from this modest and most talented gentleman.
Ronnie Barker was the "Guv'nor"
...Yes the writing was genius that shrivelled away inexplicably with going straight but who could handle such a role today apart from David Jason...?

@marts500 David Jason of course played Blanco so well in some episodes ...
