Review: Maybelline Stylish Smokes Eyeshadow Quad

I am so sad that now these Maybelline quads are different sizes instead of four equally portioned eyeshadows, now the lid shades are very small and they give you a large amount of the highlight shade :(

Hi Irene - What I LOVE about the Maybelline line of quads is that their shades are not all that pigmented, so it allows me to put more. I have wasted so much money in HIP duos and some ELF eyeshadows in that while the colors are absolutely beautiful (esp. the plum shades), they are WAY too dark and pigmented on my fair skin. I suppose there is a technique for appyling pigmented eyeshadows but I just really prefer these inexpensive Maybelline products. I have 2 and will get Charcoal today.

@nemoryer hello nemoryer! have you tried duofibre crease/eyeshadow brushes? they apply eyeshadows sheerly so you can wear any colour hth :3

i really hate the old formula they had in the blue container. the shade was soo pretty but when i put it on my eye it was soo translucent. the shadow itself was soo hard. like i mean the powder was hardened and i had to scratch at it to get any product. i have the purple quad now and its soo much more better. good job maybelline for amping it up, because the older formula was not cutting it.

Though this was posted quite some time ago, just saw it tonight. I own the amethyst quad, and I have never been dissatisfied with this product! It beats out the Dior quint palette (can't recall name right now) on all levels ~ price, colour, durability and depth of colour. Really happy to found yet another fantastic purple product to add to my burgeoning purple shadow collection!! Thank you for posting this :)

PLUM is so in this season, I am told by the gals at Nordstrom. Could you do a PURPLE SHOW please, in frost and metallic (NO GLITTER) to appease women of all ages, I am 63. Definitely no glitter for me.

I am wondering if you could do eggplant/plum in Bobbi Brown, Philosophy, Lancome, Maybelline, Rimmel, L'Oreal HIP, Mary Kay and NYX.

I actually have this Maybelline Quad but found that the purple does not have frost at all. Thank you.

I actually got this yesterday (Amethyst No. 06). I love the dark plum color on the top right, but find it is not as frosty as I would like and it also goes on a LITTLE TOO DARK than I'd like. ANY SUGGESTIONS on a nice similar shade that has FROST BUT NO GLITTER? I"m too old for glitter. :) Singles would be fine too. Someone recommended Mary Kay Sweet Plum but I think that would be too dark for me as well but it does have frost. I also am told NYX Eggplant has frost but too dark. THANKS.

to make the shimmer show up better you should try wetting the brush or applicator with visene first then dip it into the black glitter color! post if you love it or hate it but I find that that works well

I love the natural smokes. It's really good for an everyday natural look. It kind of reminds me of Elena Gilbert's make up from the Vampire Diaries.

I have the charcoal and natural smokes, and I'm very happy with them. they're excellent colours for the price, and I bet they're the kind of shades that look great on anyone. The browns aren't too reddish and the greys aren't too blue wich is usually the case with inexpensive eyeshadows. i definitely recommend them.

I bought the amethyst smokes quad and fell in love with it! The only thing was that it felt a little too dramatic for everyday... So I bought the natural smokes quad and I love it even more!!! I have been wearing it everyday since I got it!!!

I wear the silvery color on top of NYX jumbo eyeshadow pencil in Pots and Pans... looks really good. I don't wear it as a browbone color b/c it's to shimmery.

I bought the Emerald Smokes and Amethyst Smokes yesterday. I also purchased the Enchanted Forest quad. I swatched them last night and the colors are gorgeous. I have not purchased Maybelline shadows in years because of the frostiness (too much) and horrible staying powder. If you get a chance check out the Enchanted Forest Quad. The colors are unusual. I have a ton of these maybelline quads and they are all pretty good.....and you're totally right, over an e/s base = even better. I do notice that the difference between these and mac/stila/ud... is that by the end of the day, these lose the "definition"/crispness they had upon application. Does that make sense? The high end e/s look exactly the same @ end of day as they did in the morning....these don't after a long day but hey for $6, still pretty good! :)

How is the staying power on these shadows? How long do they last? I have been hearing good things about these quads & other drugstore shadows but that enough though they are reformulated they fade by the end of the day more. I would like to try some drugsores shadows and I would like your unbiased opinion...:-)

@perfumesnob84 I have the Maybelline Mocha Motion Quad and I'm hitting pan on it because I use it for an everyday Smokey Eye. I prime my lids with Clinique concealer and/ or Quick Eyes cream shadow.

I must say I've put off buying high end eye shadows like MAC because the quality of this quad is that good! I just toss the sponge applicators that come with it and use my Clinique or ELF brushes to apply.

I have mabeline's amethyst all on it's own, the darkest purple in the amethyst palette but I believe that's the name of the color. Anyways, I was quite disappointed with it. I don't often buy drug store make-up but the color was gorgeous. As soon as i ran my brush over it, the eye shadow began to clump and form messy loose clusters. It was awful...and it was fairly recent that i bought it.

my lid color seems to be kind of oddly textured but i think it's just the actual one i picked up, not in general. the colors are very very pretty and i've been using it almost daily since i grabbed it :D

Thanks for the vid! It annoys me that Maybelline don't seem to sell their ExpertWear Quads in Europe and I have no idea why! Last year I bought an old style expertwear mono in "I love lilac" but they have never sold the quads and don't even sell those monos anymore! They sell other quads but are nothing like these.. I really want to try the smoky amethyst set and the chai latte quad!

I have the single of the purple amethyst smokey color, and I love it... my only complaint is that if I'm wearing it with other higher quality eyeshadows, it won't blend with them and it wont go over them or anything. So, I basically have to make sure I don't have any overlap or I end up having to swipe it on with the sponge applicator and then brush blend.

I love these quads, I have all four! They are more go to when I want a quick look that is still smoky. They all work great and you can't beat the price. I even got a compliment from a guy I work with saying the colors look airbrushed. Definitely a must buy!

I've a Palladio shadow that looks like that purple lid color. And I recently inherited a high end (brand uncertain) eyeshadow single from my sis that looks like it too. Sadly, finding the Palladio Herbal shadows is probably /really/ hard now that they seem to have jumped onto the baked minerals bandwagon.

I used to have a couple of these expertwear quads before they did the reformulation and they were horrible I threw them away. After that I decided to ignore Maybelline eyeshadows forever.

But these new quads sound good, I will have to pick some up to give them a try. =o

Which Revlon Quads are you referring to? I've tried the Revlon Colorstay ones and the color payoff is HORRIBLEEE!!! =((( Every color looked white when swatched! (Revlon Matte single shadows were great however.)

I do agree with you. Maybelline has definitely improved their eye shadow formulas. These are convenient to throw in my purse or for travel. No matter how well I pack eye shadow palettes, I get so paranoid that something is going to break or shatter. With these, I won't be too heartbroken if something happened.
