I think Del Shannon used a modified Clavioline called a Muistron -or something. The Clavioline as it is stock, just never sounds like what Del Shannon had on record. Cheers though.
Nice! I've got an original Selmer Clavioline Concert... definitely NOT for sale!! Problem is, some of the plastic rockers are damaged. I'm on the lookout for repairs/replacements...
I used to play a clavioline at church as an third manual (great trumpet sound) then take it to a local pub where I used to play in a 60s rhythm group - we used it to great effect in Telstar and also for "Runaway" by Del Shannon
@sparklerofalbion As the story goes on the recording session for "Baby You're A Rich Man" John Lennon took an orange and rolled it up and down the keyboard to get that bagpipe sound.
@ihop28 Ooops, my mistake. The melotron was used on "Strawberry Fields". The Clavoline was used on Baby You're a Rich Man", and the other two Beatles songs mentioned below.
Thank you ever so much for this, sir. Just obtained one from a gentleman in Victoria (OZ). The craftmanship of the this beasty amazes me. "Crows nest" electronics but "oh so well set out" and the individual wooden hammer action to contact on the keyboard itself. Built and played by artisans.
Icky Thump by the White Stripes is my favorite example of clavoline :)

I think this was used on the song"Runaway" by Del Shannon. The Traveling Wilburys also did a cover of that song and used this instrument.
