I am posting this comment July 28, 2011. It is less than a week away from this year's "debt ceiling crises" in the U.S. due August 2nd. So far: no agreement between President Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner.
The locomotive on the right must be a Republican and the one on the left a Democrat. This video sums up the theatre of the absurd which is the state of Federal politics in America today.
In the mid to late 1910's, there was an excess of these old steam-locomotives lying around. Event planners would put on spectacular crashes at public events to draw crowds using these extra locomotives. They were valued about as much then as we value cars made in the 1980's today.
It's interesting how they managed to sync up the sound. Obviously, the sound was recorded on phonograph style equipement being that there was no sound film back in those days.
I wonder if the tracks in that field were purposely laid out there just for this event.
This clip had no sound. I added it all. The hissing of the steam is actually me making a hissing sound; other elements were pulled from Public Domain sounds on the internet.
As the clip is a mere 8 seconds long, it didn't take long. The most complex portion was the timing.
Overall, I think the sound came out just right. Perhaps sometime I'll find time to add sound to the full clip.
he's right. By this time these loco's were simply out-dated. Look at the wheel arrangements! And yes, im pretty sure they valued steam almost as much as we do today.
those steam locomotives were already headed for the scrapyard... worn out old steam engines like these were a dime a dozen back then ...promoters staged crashes like this all over the country back then...at a crash like this in the midwest...both locomotives exploded in a big way and several people were killed...
I don't think they valued steam locomotives the way we do today - a wreck like shown in this video would be equivalent to something like two modenr diesels crashing head-to-head... Not such a drastic loss, there's plenty more out there.
this clip was a publicity stunt they were common in the 1900 today they are illegal because a train crash can be deadly

The problem with these events is that there would often be red-hot chunks of shrapnel from the boiler that few into the crowd

In 1917, this was probably the coolest thing ever. It's still high on the cool meter today.
