I LOVE the gibson SG. It can do alot..but for that more warm tone and greater sustain, go for the les paul. I think they have their time and place, just like the fender guitars. I say get both the les paul and sg!
Comparing an sg to a lp is like comparing apples to oranges. Personally, I'm an sg guy. I own an sg standard and a lp studio. @XLR8R018 sorry but the telecaster was the first production solidbody electric in 1949 and there where others before it just not production models the les paul however when finally made was early 50's ^_^
@geeupson Telecaster was released to the public in 1952. Les Paul was finished before 1949, but wasn't released until 1951. Anyways, the Les Paul was way better than the tele, even in the 50's. You can't mess with Gibson quality, so don't even try.
The SG has many different looks? Are you kidding me? SG's are possibly the most monotonous-looking guitars I've ever seen. 90% of them are some shade of natural finish brown or red, or if not, just a flat color. The maple tops on a Les Paul, as well as the many different finishes available, make each one different.
Overall, two great guitars in playability and sound, but you can't say that Les Pauls look similar. That's just not true.

It's all about preference...I have an sg standard and I fuckin love it. I've had a les paul studio and it wasn't that great my mim strat was better in my opinion. I've played all kinds of lp's even a 1957 original gold top. Which had a beautiful tone and they definitely don't make 'em like that anymore. But Lp standards now a days are definitely not worth the extra grand over sg standards. I'de rather spend that money on a badass head...which is what I did
The SG was a Les Paul until Les Paul said take my name off of it. It didn't live up to his standards. The Father of the electric guitar and multi-track recording. True genius. The SG looks awesome but it's sound can be achieved in a schecter c-1 or a sg faded with swapped out pick-ups. No electric guitar can come close to the Les Paul. It's in the wood kids. I'm young and happy that I can understand and appreciate the Les Paul.
Not close. A strat competes with the Les Paul more than an SG. In terms of it's tone and dynamics. Les Paul is the classiest and meanest electric guitar all at once. Play one. Afford one. Buy one.
I own a 1974 SG Standard and it has all the tone, depth, crunch that anyone could ask for. Played through a Marshall JCM800 with the 1960A cabinet there is none better.
I think the guy who posted this vid aaaalllways wanted the Les Paul... but bought a SG... man, theres no better symbol of rock than the Les Paul, everybody knows that, and the tone... from Blues, Funk, Heavy Metal, Pop, etc... the Les Paul suits 100% in Design and Tone.. No chance to SG... But in my opinion, guitars dont fight each other, they are just different, such as the guitarists... PS.: Course I have a LP... lol
1. you are wrong... a LES PAUL is the god damn image of rock not an sg...
2. why are people arguing about this? i mean they are both gibsons it was different if it was between gibson and fender i mean they are both great guitars...
one more thing!!!... the SG's lightness makes it neck heavy. while a strapped LP is well balanced because of it's weght distribution... but I love SGs other wise wouldn't have had 4 of'em.
I don't think one is better than the other. they're just different. I personally love both. my first gibson ever was a vintage 63 SG cuz it was easier for me to adjust being left-handed. after that I bought and customized a couple of left-handed LPs and SGs. my favorite guitar ever though is a historic 1955 lefty gibson LP gold top with p90 pickups. it sounds perfect whether you're playin' clean or dirty and I like it's heaviness specially when I'm bending.
should i switch my pickups on my faded sg special to classic '57 in the neck and burstbucker pro in the bridge, or should i use emg 60/81 setup, or anyother suggestion. i play anything from zeppelin to metallica, but nothing heavier than metallica, and if anyone has any amp suugestions for $600 or lower, thatd be a help also
hey go with duncan alnico ii pro humbuckers they sound great not to heavy not to lite there the same one slash uses in all his guitars you can get a wide range of sounds for classic rock to metal more versatalie than emg dont get me wrong i love emgs but if your looking for somthing for both rockand metal go duncan alnico pro II they are great !! hope this helped :)
I love SGs have owned several - currently have a 1970-ish SG standard. They are ROCK no doubt. Nothing like a big fat power chord on an SG running straight into a blistering tube amp
juaz.. i love the Sg... you can look... that all that have that guitar seems to be cool... Angus Young...Tomy Iommi... hahaha and i respect the les paul player...like jimmy page... joe perry...hahaha...but the les paul....is used by many players....
This is a very opinionated video. I own a Gibson SG and have played a Gibson Les Paul countless times. It's not really about physical differences, its more about the sound. The double cutaway is a very wonderful feature on the SG and makes it easier to play and is really the only physical difference between the two that matters. But the SG has a more colorful tone and much more of a bite, while the Les Paul has more of a rich, deeper, and powerful tone. It truly depends on what someone prefers.
the gibson sg is a decent guitar but will never produce the sound of a gibson les paul comparing a gibson sg to a les paul is like comparing a fender strat(gibson sg to a gibson les paul gibson les pauls will out beat sgs
Not to boast, but I own both. I love Gibsons period. They are just 2 different sounding guitars. The Les Paul has a deeper richer sound and The SG has a brighter lighter sound. Both are great, but I prefer my Les Paul, it just seems to have the best tone for my preference.
So because many famous musicians play Les Pauls, we should buy an SG instead? So many musicians play them for a reason. They are both great guitars, but Les Pauls pack more sound than an SG can, any day of the week.
Sorry but I disagree completely. The SG to me has horrible balance, same tone as a Les Paul Studio, bad finishes and worse quality. The Les Pauls are really inconsistent though so I probably just own a really good one.
I like the SG much better; yes I've owned and played both. For me, it's an issure of balance: the SG has it and the Les Paul doesn't. The SG becomes almost an extension of your body, while to me, the LP feels like an anchor. I must say though that Guild made a better-quality "SG" for cheaper: the S-100, or Polara model, now discontinued.
It's a 1962 Gibson SG les Paul Custom. I was doing all this research cause I knew I'd seen this guitar before then noticed the image had a caption under it. lol
The Gibson SG is just the cream of Gibson guitars, i think the reason why people want a Les Paul is smiply the name Les Paul it sounds expencive. both guitars sound very alike but have suttle differance's in sound due to the thinkness of the two guitars plus the two guitars may have differant humbuckers which will change the sound slightly. the reason why i like the SG instead of the LP is the SG is lighter than the LP but surely you can not compear two they are just two close. two great guitars
the les paul is very thick and dense, making sustain almost endless. the les paul also has a wider neck making bending easier and fingerpicking easier as well. the sg is thin, making less sustain, as well as pickguard mounted pickups, which KILLS resonance
the SG was made as a blues guitar, wich is why it makes a badass rock'n'roll guitar(cuz rock is heavily based on blues) personly i like the sg cus its lighter and smaller, and has a faster neck and it just looks kooler. and not to mention its the most iconic rocknroll guitar (other than the ES335). and lastly WHO THE FUCK IS ZAK WILD. the greatest sg players are Angus Young and Frank Zappa
@Snoopy0345 zakk wylde also used an sg not just a les paul he has his own made by epiphone which kicks ass it is a mix of an sg and a flying v, and zakk wyld is a good guitarist
i own both a gold top les paul deluxe( basicly a standard with mini hums) and an sg and in my opinion compairing the two instruments is stupid. very different sounds. and who cares what has more colors and different prices and who played them? because guitar to me is about expression and what sounds best to you....
Personally i own both guitars and they are both (hence the name) and i've found the les paul to be a very different sounding and playing guitar, and same goes for the sg, they both are very good and i don't see why people can't just accept the differences and like them both
What a load of Jarg. You do realise there is no such thing as 'fourthly' or 'fifthly' and that the SG is cheaper for a reason? Or how about the fact that when it was designed as a 'better' Les Paul, while the first few did have Les' name on it, he decided that he wanted nothing to do with the guitar shortly after.
I prefer the SG, i've tried a Gibson Les paul with my 1959 Marshall plexi and it was just way too dark sounding for my liking, on the other hand i tried my mates Vintage ICON VS6 with a BK nailbomb in the bridge and it gave me just the sound i was looking for. But to be fair it depends on what your looking.
I also prefer the placement of the pickup selector on the SG, i find moving around on stage its easy to knock the selector on an LP.
ive know of two people who have had the necks break on them... played 1 of the offenders in question and it felt flimsy not like a les paul at all... tho id prefare the look of the sg but....
Your opinion about how the sg is the image of rock is opposite of what you said about how too many people play LPs. Zakk Wylde, Slash, Jimmy Page, Trent Reznor all play LPs. If they aren't rock then you have to tell me what rock is and that they play sg's.
4. If the sg is an improvement over the LP, then why do so many people still play the LP over the SG? they're two completely different guitars.
5. The sound of an sg is a mid booster. Both the lows and the highs are actually suppressed, and it gives you a sort of equal with the mids. Some people like this, some people (like me) dont. It's a matter of taste.
6. Your last comment about the classic rock crunch is completely opinionated.
3. Wow...just...wow. You put the fact that so many great guitarists have played a les paul as a negative?! It shows what a great guitar is. Tony Iommi, Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Hendrix, James Hetfield, Eric Johnson, Robby Krieger, Keith Richards, Gary Rossington, Carlos Santana, Pete Townshend, Johnny Winter, Zakk Wylde, and Angus Young have all played sg's. The changes in the looks of les pauls isn't there because there's changes in the way they play
1. yes, the sg is lighter, but whether its easier to play or not is a matte of tase. The weight of the lp gives it sustain and imo better tone.
2. yes, the sg is cheaper, and thats because it uses a significantly less amount of wood, so it costs less to make. there is also not a maple top on it, so that makes it cheaper. the finishes on the les paul also contribute to the price.
I like Les Paul Jr..double cutaways. I think the SG is one of the UGLIEST things ever(sorry!). Les Paul himself hated the SG so much he made Gibson take his name off it.
these are good reasons, but i thinks its really just your opinion. I like Les Pauls better, you like SGs. nothing wrong with that but it doesnt necesarily mean one is better than the other its just what you like.
I´ve had the pleasure of playing a real Gibson Les Paul Custom (SG) built in 1961 :D that´s right the first year of the SG but it was named Les Paul in 1961. Aged wood sounds awesome. I currently own a Gibson Les Paul Standard and it´s a killer it will do any style of music as will a SG. It´s all about your own taste but never be prejudice, cause then you´ll never learn anything, be openminded and try alot of stuff
I prefer the SG, but the 5 "reasons" in the video as to why it should be superior are idiotic. If you want a LP buy one. If you prefer the SG, buy one of those -but grow the fuck up.
wow you are so stupid the sg yes is lihter but the les paul dpoes sound better the sg has one famous look red the les paul has sooo many you have every thing back words and all the famous artist use les pauls for a reason
i think it more down personal choice than anything else. the two guitars can sound more or less the same if you want them to. i much like the sg than the les paul but thats my personal choice.
This is a dumb discussion, choosing a guitar is all about personal preference. There is no 'superior' model, they sound different and are meant to be played different styles with.
this is kind of an endless debate because the sound will always be a bit more metal if you for instance insert some EMG´s instead of some classic humbuckers. Like i said it´s for both genres.
ive had a 1961 sg since 1965, i love it wont part with it, as far as is it any better than a les paul standard, well i think it is just a matter of personal prefference, i love both and wouldnt argue about it.
Dude get over it u can do anything with a les paul from metal to blues and it looks good with any style. LP's also have lots of different color possibilities. Yea it costs more but its worth it. I mean dont get me wrong my next guitar is gunna be an sg standard and i already have a gibson LP standard but theyre both awsome guitars
i personally like the LP style, you'll never look out of place playing a les paul. but if you take an SG and play like blues it looks a little out of place in my opinion with the devil horn look. but it is personal choice, I like heavier things unless theres a truely practical reason to go lighter, just because it feels more real to me. but these are just my opinions and i know thers people who love SGs too and they're free to do so.
The "improvement of flaws" part is really not thought through well either. The SG has better cutaways and is thinner, but its switch placement is questionable, it's neck is vurnerable to warp/cracking, and loss of tone/sustain. The looks aren't comparable. SGs go for a badass look while LPs go for a vintage look. Both great, but opposite. For the last reason, that's opinion. I get that this is just suggestion though, and remember that I like both guitars. I use both of and love them both :P
Also the width and weight of a les paul give it a more distinguished tone and WAY more sustain. This is a fact. However, in return, it's heavy (which noone really likes). Evens out. Two, you can't compare guitars by price. Yes, the Les Paul is a little more expensive than the SG, but that also means it has more resell value, and it also has to do with the fact that it's slightly more popular (also a fact, but note, just slightly). The "overdone" part is really just garbage you put there btw.
This is totally opinion. To say that a LP is better than the SG or vice versa is pure ignorance. The contradiction is that every weakness an LP has, the SG has it as a strength, and the other way around. I believe that a "perfect" guitar can be formed if somehow these two guitars fused.
I think it's kinda funny that you made a video with reasons why an SG is better ! I agree with you, but it's funny ! Everyone has their favorites and for my tastes, the SG is a better choice. The one thing negative is the neck-heaviness to the body so I moved the strap lock to the horn. I have one of each--I sold one LP-it just didn't do it for me. I'll keep the one but I actually prefer Strats & Teles. I have about 6 of each. Love my SG though-it was my first Gibson. Got it in '01 or '02 new
I've played both, and won't even touch an SG. It's too light! The neck is heavier than the body, which causes it to droop if you're not constantly holding it up. My LP stays where I put it. Sure it's heavy, but that just adds to the richness of its tone.
I AGREE COMPLETELY, but i dont really think # 3 has to do with anything plus SG is used by lots of guitarists, such as Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and also JImi Hendrix
in my opinion, both guitars are great..but different.
the sg might not be as versatile as the les paul..but the sg has a better snarling rock tone.
its all a matter of opinion..but i thought id mention les paul ( the creator of the les paul, sg) has passed away..it if werent for him there wouldnt be a gibson les paul guitar.
The reason SGs were not used as much as Les Pauls was SGs of the past were prone to neck breakage. I believe. Which pushed people away. Then you had the fact that Jimmy Page, Adrian Smith, Randy Rhoads, Pete Townsend, and so forth backing Les Pauls. That is why SGs are used less. As far as body with and or shape that is a personal thing. If the pots, wiring, and neck are in very good shape. Lets rock.
I own a les paul standard and have played an SG. In my opinion the Les Paul gets WAY better tone than the SG mostly because the les paul is semi-hollow. Both are really good guitars. but the les paul is better. Its more expensive than the SG for a reason. : )
its true. the sg was the next les paul. But les paul hated the guitar so demanded to take of his name. o btw you cant compare the sg anf the les paul. its like comparing apples to oranges. but i like them both and when get some cash ill get a les paul nd the 2nd guitawill ber a sg or a scheter revenger(syn gates s guitar but not his signiture guitar. you know like slashes signature les paul )
this is a horrible comparison.. you say the sg has better tone? thats because the pickups are made for rock tone... put emg's in a les paul standar you have the best tone humanly possible... learn your shit kid
i also hate zakk wild.. considering hes a lead guitarist it pisses me off
but a lot of metal rhythm guitarists have it for the beefy and bass tone and good palm muting clarity
i understand your point but i also have one
i also beleive that if you want a les paul style guitar with emgs for lead just buy the esp eclipse or ltd ec-1000 its just a les paul with a shecter neck and the width of an sg
Keep saving for a Les Paul, these things are diet coke and im sick of the bacon colour scheme. Want proof that sg's arnt as good, look at the ACDC LOL
My gibson les Paul standard cost £1124 & my sg standard cost £1050 but the les paul comes in loads of finnishes and graphic ones too.

i LOVE the look of the les paul traditional but i know i'll save up and buy an SG standard instead because:
the neck is thinner
you can reach the top frets
i dont have to struggle to keep it balanced on my leg when i sit down
it's much lighter
OH and i play an epiphone sg at the moment so dont listen to me because i'm completely bias :D

I'de rather spend that money on a badass head...which is what I did
HAZE322 1 year ago
The SG was a Les Paul until Les Paul said take my name off of it. It didn't live up to his standards. The Father of the electric guitar and multi-track recording. True genius. The SG looks awesome but it's sound can be achieved in a schecter c-1 or a sg faded with swapped out pick-ups. No electric guitar can come close to the Les Paul. It's in the wood kids. I'm young and happy that I can understand and appreciate the Les Paul.
bluboy21 1 year ago
Not close. A strat competes with the Les Paul more than an SG. In terms of it's tone and dynamics. Les Paul is the classiest and meanest electric guitar all at once. Play one. Afford one. Buy one.

i like the sg better but id rather have a les paul than any fender any day!

PS.: Course I have a LP... lol

I don't think one is better than the other. they're just different. I personally love both. my first gibson ever was a vintage 63 SG cuz it was easier for me to adjust being left-handed. after that I bought and customized a couple of left-handed LPs and SGs. my favorite guitar ever though is a historic 1955 lefty gibson LP gold top with p90 pickups. it sounds perfect whether you're playin' clean or dirty and I like it's heaviness specially when I'm bending.
mazinq75 1 year ago
on sg, it is easy to reach the highest frets

should i switch my pickups on my faded sg special to classic '57 in the neck and burstbucker pro in the bridge, or should i use emg 60/81 setup, or anyother suggestion. i play anything from zeppelin to metallica, but nothing heavier than metallica, and if anyone has any amp suugestions for $600 or lower, thatd be a help also

Dasune25 1 year ago
the gibson sg is a decent guitar but will never produce the sound of a gibson les paul comparing a gibson sg to a les paul is like comparing a fender strat(gibson sg to a gibson les paul gibson les pauls will out beat sgs
AnthonyBackintime 1 year ago
Not to boast, but I own both. I love Gibsons period. They are just 2 different sounding guitars. The Les Paul has a deeper richer sound and The SG has a brighter lighter sound. Both are great, but I prefer my Les Paul, it just seems to have the best tone for my preference.
A2WTommyGun 2 years ago
Too bad that the different looks for the SG all kind of suck. Also I don't like the weight on the SG... it's too light and doesn't feel right to me.
MtlGuitarist97 2 years ago
So because many famous musicians play Les Pauls, we should buy an SG instead? So many musicians play them for a reason. They are both great guitars, but Les Pauls pack more sound than an SG can, any day of the week.

Sorry but I disagree completely. The SG to me has horrible balance, same tone as a Les Paul Studio, bad finishes and worse quality. The Les Pauls are really inconsistent though so I probably just own a really good one.
MtlGuitarist97 2 years ago
I like the SG much better; yes I've owned and played both. For me, it's an issure of balance: the SG has it and the Les Paul doesn't. The SG becomes almost an extension of your body, while to me, the LP feels like an anchor. I must say though that Guild made a better-quality "SG" for cheaper: the S-100, or Polara model, now discontinued.

The Gibson SG is just the cream of Gibson guitars, i think the reason why people want a Les Paul is smiply the name Les Paul it sounds expencive. both guitars sound very alike but have suttle differance's in sound due to the thinkness of the two guitars plus the two guitars may have differant humbuckers which will change the sound slightly. the reason why i like the SG instead of the LP is the SG is lighter than the LP but surely you can not compear two they are just two close. two great guitars
mikeytheskinhead 2 years ago
the les paul is very thick and dense, making sustain almost endless. the les paul also has a wider neck making bending easier and fingerpicking easier as well. the sg is thin, making less sustain, as well as pickguard mounted pickups, which KILLS resonance
ultimateguitarguy 2 years ago 18
@ultimateguitarguy the original SG/LP and the '61 RIs have wood mounted pickups- and that's what a real SG is
hotlanta71 1 year ago
the SG was made as a blues guitar, wich is why it makes a badass rock'n'roll guitar(cuz rock is heavily based on blues) personly i like the sg cus its lighter and smaller, and has a faster neck and it just looks kooler. and not to mention its the most iconic rocknroll guitar (other than the ES335). and lastly WHO THE FUCK IS ZAK WILD. the greatest sg players are Angus Young and Frank Zappa
Snoopy0345 2 years ago
@Snoopy0345 zakk wylde also used an sg not just a les paul he has his own made by epiphone which kicks ass it is a mix of an sg and a flying v, and zakk wyld is a good guitarist

i own both a gold top les paul deluxe( basicly a standard with mini hums) and an sg and in my opinion compairing the two instruments is stupid. very different sounds. and who cares what has more colors and different prices and who played them? because guitar to me is about expression and what sounds best to you....

sglespaul21 2 years ago

Your opinion about how the sg is the image of rock is opposite of what you said about how too many people play LPs. Zakk Wylde, Slash, Jimmy Page, Trent Reznor all play LPs. If they aren't rock then you have to tell me what rock is and that they play sg's.
cfckmk108 2 years ago
6. Your last comment about the classic rock crunch is completely opinionated.
cfckmk108 2 years ago
The changes in the looks of les pauls isn't there because there's changes in the way they play
cfckmk108 2 years ago
Comment removed
cfckmk108 2 years ago
1. yes, the sg is lighter, but whether its easier to play or not is a matte of tase. The weight of the lp gives it sustain and imo better tone.
2. yes, the sg is cheaper, and thats because it uses a significantly less amount of wood, so it costs less to make. there is also not a maple top on it, so that makes it cheaper. the finishes on the les paul also contribute to the price.
cfckmk108 2 years ago
I like Les Paul Jr..double cutaways. I think the SG is one of the UGLIEST things ever(sorry!). Les Paul himself hated the SG so much he made Gibson take his name off it.

Both guitars are great :)
It´s all about your own taste but never be prejudice, cause then you´ll never learn anything, be openminded and try alot of stuff

i think it more down personal choice than anything else. the two guitars can sound more or less the same if you want them to. i much like the sg than the les paul but thats my personal choice.
mikeytheskinhead 2 years ago
This is a dumb discussion, choosing a guitar is all about personal preference. There is no 'superior' model, they sound different and are meant to be played different styles with.

yeah but you stand much better with the LP - and the LP has a more "meaty" sound. its for metal AND rock n roll
Andreas0705 2 years ago 2
no ur wrong les paul is more classic sound as with the SG its more rock n roll metal!
fazel911 2 years ago
this is kind of an endless debate because the sound will always be a bit more metal if you for instance insert some EMG´s instead of some classic humbuckers. Like i said it´s for both genres.

I mean dont get me wrong my next guitar is gunna be an sg standard and i already have a gibson LP standard but theyre both awsome guitars
gibsonstandard805 2 years ago
i personally like the LP style, you'll never look out of place playing a les paul. but if you take an SG and play like blues it looks a little out of place in my opinion with the devil horn look. but it is personal choice, I like heavier things unless theres a truely practical reason to go lighter, just because it feels more real to me. but these are just my opinions and i know thers people who love SGs too and they're free to do so.
andykins118118 2 years ago
The "improvement of flaws" part is really not thought through well either. The SG has better cutaways and is thinner, but its switch placement is questionable, it's neck is vurnerable to warp/cracking, and loss of tone/sustain. The looks aren't comparable. SGs go for a badass look while LPs go for a vintage look. Both great, but opposite. For the last reason, that's opinion. I get that this is just suggestion though, and remember that I like both guitars. I use both of and love them both :P
DrkSh4d0wXx21704 2 years ago
Also the width and weight of a les paul give it a more distinguished tone and WAY more sustain. This is a fact. However, in return, it's heavy (which noone really likes). Evens out. Two, you can't compare guitars by price. Yes, the Les Paul is a little more expensive than the SG, but that also means it has more resell value, and it also has to do with the fact that it's slightly more popular (also a fact, but note, just slightly). The "overdone" part is really just garbage you put there btw.
DrkSh4d0wXx21704 2 years ago
This is totally opinion. To say that a LP is better than the SG or vice versa is pure ignorance. The contradiction is that every weakness an LP has, the SG has it as a strength, and the other way around. I believe that a "perfect" guitar can be formed if somehow these two guitars fused.
DrkSh4d0wXx21704 2 years ago

R.I.P. les paul.
fatlip66 2 years ago 2
The reason SGs were not used as much as Les Pauls was SGs of the past were prone to neck breakage. I believe. Which pushed people away. Then you had the fact that Jimmy Page, Adrian Smith, Randy Rhoads, Pete Townsend, and so forth backing Les Pauls. That is why SGs are used less. As far as body with and or shape that is a personal thing. If the pots, wiring, and neck are in very good shape. Lets rock.
PrsFenderJackson1980 2 years ago
I own a les paul standard and have played an SG. In my opinion the Les Paul gets WAY better tone than the SG mostly because the les paul is semi-hollow. Both are really good guitars. but the les paul is better. Its more expensive than the SG for a reason. : )
