rearranged by shel silverstein. i got a record from the early fifties with trumpeter "papa" celestin and band doing their version of it. who originally wrote it i have no clue though, most probably written in the 20ies...

@prairiemark Apparently it is also full of catholics. Voodoo is sometimes referred to as "Louisiana Catholicism" because it grew from many African slaves blending their own religion into catholicism.

Best version of this song is the Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam performance. Thinkin' it was one in the late 70's. Hard to find. This particular version seems sterile in comparison. There was an energy or "feel"... something that just cannot be described in the one I grew up listening to. Still happy it was here to see & listen to, though. Haven't heard it in quite a while.

My husband and I had the opportunity to stand at the grave of Marie Laveau on a walking tour of New Orleans. Burials are above the ground in vaults in that part of Louisiana. There were all sorts of "offerings" on the ground around the grave and marks scratched in the soft stone and concrete walls of the tomb. Having grown up hearing this song, it was a real kick to visit her grave.
