  • This song is hauntingly beautiful as is the rest of the album.

I wish his collaborations with his significant other today had the same passion and mystique as this or were as harmonious as Past the mission was with Tori. Oh well, that is what going back and revisting this masterpiece is for.

  • I love this song so much. :)

  • just the same bass rift, lots of reoccuring rifts like this on the album, EG> the frail and the fragile

  • sounds like Into the Void at the beggining

  • @ApexExtended kinda like how the wretched sounds like the fragile?

  • Yeah, it does have a "I don't want to die" feel....Hah!

  • @tx54v7 Yeah you are right!

  • I was listening to this song before my 8 year-old cat became sick and died the next day, this song will never be the same for me.

  • Listened to this song on repeat for three hours to keep myself sane after my aunt was killed...

  • @romansoldierdude This song helps me too.

  • La mer means "the sea" in french ;)

  • And when the day arrives I'll become the sky And I'll become the sea And the sea will come to kiss me For I am going Home Nothing can stop me now

-French lyrics translated. TRENT IS GOD.

  • @grimsleepy There are no lyrics in this song.... what possible story can it tell

  • @xolker Not just the song, but the albums together.

This does have lyrics from 1:07 - 1:22, they're just in French, and translated right above your comment.

  • @B1ll1amH I see, well even if I knew french I can't hear her whispers over the music, and had to turn it up really loud just to hear her in the first place. But regardless, it still is very repetitive.

  • «Illusion is the first of all pleasures.»

  • It's pretty good for the first minute or so but it just repeats itself over and over again :(

  • @drakkname i could not agree with you more, friend... this song has always held a special place in my soul, from the very first time i heard it... there's something eerily human about all of his work... it is all just simply amazing

  • Sad that when you come to enjoy some great music you see a load of stress head comments.

  • "when i decide to kill myself..." yeah, do it, and never hear the song again, thats a great idea!!! idiot.

  • Bought The Fragile. Best 12 bucks i've ever spent <3

  • this song was played at my funeral. No typo there, it was MY funeral. Tax evasion ftw!

  • @TheNineinchsnails just to let you know i have notified the IRS, they are on to you and looking into your death now.

  • @MrDinomite89 oh noez!!! Imma be audited!

  • @TheNineinchsnails Like a Scientologist.

  • @TheNineinchsnails haha cool :/

  • @drakkname I could not agree with you more. The melody has a very strong feel of clarity and happiness to it.

  • I miss you still

  • @drakkname More than beautiful my friend, beyond beautiful. This song..the melody speaks to me on a whole different level, it's like nothing I've ever listened to.

  • imagine how surprised people were to hear something like this, when they were so used to the Downward Spiral.Sucks that this album was so underated by some fans, its a total peice of art!

  • In live,2003(i think)it was incredible

  • I absolutely love the piano in this one.

I bought it because I loved the entire album so much.

By the way, if you listen closely to this song, you will catch some of the sounds from Into the Void ;)

  • Totally blasting this up right now, embracing the resonant drone of melody as if the beautiful La Mer herself resided within my head.

  • This whole fucking world needs to be bitch-slapped, especially the one's who are puppets and follow the puppet-masters, stand on your own be yourself, find youer true potential and don't let anyone take away your right to be whatever you want to be!!!!

  • @SHAWNWILD1 Agreed. Always remember: you life and your happiness, as well as the happiness and well-being of thise around you, is more important than any system in the world. Find your own meanings.

  • Thanks for this. Great quality for a YT upload.

  • Geez I wish people would stop commenting about how much people need to get sodomized with a broom, or clean out their ears. It's all a matter of personal taste and opinions people. Understand that. Those of you who do, good job. Keep listening.

  • @DjSickipedia I have regained some hope to humanity, thanks. As said by yourself make of it as you want.

  • shhhhh. keep quiet. god is talking.

  • i found this easy to masturbate to.

  • Notice how he incorporates "Where is everyone"! Adding on and making it over. Love this Guy...even if he does look like Snape!

  • this is by far my favorite NIN song. thanks for uploading this :)

  • The Fragile is the best album of Nine Inch Nails, after, there's With Teeth, and after that there's everything else that this genius named Trent Reznor ever did.

  • I want this song played at my fucking funeral.

  • Yeah it kinda sounds like into the void but still cool.

  • @holographicplanet the theme is present throughout the entire album you know.... just listen to the baseline and you'll hear it through a lot of songs on the album

  • @SynesthesiaAddict All I could tell was that the repeated piano chords appear (differently) at the end of We're In This Together, and obviously the bassline is in Into the Void? What else is there that I haven't noticed? Just curious...

  • La mer has very similar beats to into the void. Just listen around 3:00 in the background you can hear it.

  • i love this...

  • anyone noticed the similar key in with into the void and la mer?

  • @somethingguy912 If you look at the description on the NinWiki, it explains that La Mer is the companion to Into The Void. So, yeah, there's a similar key.

  • this is the first song trent did for the fragile....

  • @sickolinokio and it was to be his last : /

  • When i hear this, i think of the rape scene in Irreversible, or the entire run of High Tension

    i rule.

  • @Resurrected2011 no you don't

  • This music is absolutely amazing!

  • such a beautiful song

  • Rien ne peut m'arrêter maintenant...

  • this song makes me think of lamer the headcrab from half life 2 xD

  • @tallyhoman911 WHY XD

  • if and when i decide to kill myself .. ill have this on a loop when they find me.

  • @elmaschingon142006 Funny. Trent wrote this song after letting go of wanting to kill himself.

  • @Slide2671 Were you at that concert in Mansfield when he said that to the audience. Just curious

  • @NM162 Nah, but I had a friend who was there and he told me about what Trent had said to the audience. It makes this song so much more beautiful and really inspiring to hear. But then again, all of Trent's music is inspiring and beautiful..

  • EMOS AND INDIES ARE LA MER

  • Calms me down... And always makes me happy.

  • @MatthewTheStrogg234 whoah deep -_-

  • why do i hear "Into The Void" in the backround on a guitar?

  • @OneNationUnderMe The same bassline and general melody is used for both songs, like they're 2 parts of the same things :P

  • masterpeice

  • Bassline = Into The Void from CD 2

  • this made me smile, and i can't stop

  • Reznor rented a house at a beach one summer, right by the ocean. He told people he was going there to work on an album, but really he was going to kill himself. But he didn't, and instead tried writing a song. And at the end of the summer, he left that place with a single song written down. Trent has said he is going to get married at that house, for how it changed him.

The song he wrote is this one.

  • @shadowofthevoid69 Same with me dude.

  • @shadowofthevoid69 bruding and deep you kid way to assert your love for his music and lack of interest towards the music to age debate

  • To limit yourself to few genres of music deprives you to develop something called "taste".

  • 3 people r La Me

  • who the FUCK would dislike this video?

  • @LankanLatino Someone who doesn't like this song, I'd imagine.

  • I've been a NIN / Reznor fan since '93. My only regret is that I didn't know about him sooner. 22 years after Pretty Hate Machine and Trent is still relevant, still making new music and constantly reinventing himself. How many artists can you say that about? It's awesome to see the younger generation getting into his music, I'm not going to knock them for having good tastes. We were all young once. Just be thankful they aren't listening to Justin fucking Bieber!

  • I'm 19, and mainstream music has never really stuck with me. I always seemed to listen to stuff that was so outdated, like NIN for example. I've been listening to them for the last 4 years and I had no idea that one of my favorite songs was from '99! lol

  • this is a cold ass cut.

  • So addictive.

Just a cool song for walking. B)

  • Trent was at his best when he was at his worst....sadly, that's how it is with many artists, probably why we lose so many good ones

  • They are masters at building music i really wish these guys and mike patton would get together and right the best album EVER!

  • @theodorehastreiter

  • N I И

  • I know opking44. The feeling N I И has seen to create is just unlike any other and is one of the greatest works in all of music. The influence and modesty Trent has had with so many ppl to help create N I И, the imagery of Rob Sheridan and it's marriage to the sound, and the layered depths and articulation of the lyrics piece together a phenomenon. It spans many genres and goes to both extremes, from the sweetest musicals to the hellish. Even Trent's choice of fashion onstage suits the scenery.

  • 2 people need to clean the wax out of their ears. Here's a Q-tip:

    o----o

  • @0bliviom

How am I to clean my ears with barbells ಠ_ಠ

  • smoke dmt and listen to this

  • I will take The Fragile over Downward Spiral ANY day.

  • And when the day arrives

    I'll become the sky

    And I'll become the sea

And the sea will come to kiss me

    For I am going home

    Nothing can stop me now

  • BRILLANT!!!

  • beauty in death whatever is left of me when i pass will be spread into the ocean...(for I am going home).

  • I do not know why my friend suggested this to me. Yeah musically it's good and all, but it isn't just my taste. How boring. He is encouraging me to listen all the way through, otherwise I wouldn't be commenting. This is all that is holding my attention, is typing with vigor. Does it get interesting? Random french words that I will now feel compelled to look up so I know the lyrics, and just. Man, it's so boring. Also, top 40 is scientifically designed to be catchy. No shame in enjoying that.

  • @kawaiinekochick2 Scientifically designed? Which nobel prize winner professors determine the Top 40 list? OH and while you're at it, can you please tell me if Harvard teaches "Top 40ology?". Pretentious idiot, trying to use big words they don't understand.

  • @Appolom64 yah dude, 'cause the word "Scientifically" is sooo gigantic. cool your jets, man. No, but for real, it doesn't take too much to take a music production major and whatevs. lol who said you had to go to harvard for it? I apologize for not enjoying the song and saying there isn't shame in liking top 40 (There really isn't you know, to each their own etc) but, like.. hm.. a lot of top 40 the artists don't write themselves, they sing what is produced for them to sing. Lolz sorry :/

  • @Appolom64 Oh, and also also, provide sources so that I can learn moar plz. If I'm wrong I would like to be corrected :) I love learning and being corrected is big part of it. Sorry for offending you with not enjoying the same music as you. But yah, I'd love to know more about it honestly. :)

  • @kawaiinekochick2 what lyrics? lol i love pretty much every song NIN has ever released but I have to agree with you. to each his own. I don't particularly enjoy top 40 myself but no shame in having a taste that differs from another pretentious idiot.

  • @Downer05 ahh it sounds like there were words in another language or whatevs. And yes lol to each idiot their own tastes :)

  • @kawaiinekochick2 there were, the woman was speaking french in the beginning

  • not since the 90s has popular media produced art like this.... NIN is perhaps one of the only bands i cherish/love that can be considered mainstream.... whats on the radio now that can touch your soul like NIN could?

  • I don't know what it is, but the out-of-tune piano adds something to this number. Perhaps like a sad clown playing a broken calliope or something. Adds a lot of emotion to it. Nice work, Trent.

  • One dislike my ass. That one troll is in love with top 40, obviously.

  • Oh man... this is just too good

"Tried to save myself but myself keep slipping"

  • This is my fav NIN song- followed by Crystal Palace ahem I mean A Warm Place.

  • i just asked for this CD for christmas....for the 3rd time..i played the first two copies out so much they scratched up to the point where they wont play

  • THIS IS THE BEST SONG OF ALL TIMES! Every time i listen to this, those notes, that voicE, that song touch my heart deep, and sometimes makes me cry. the melanchonic chord progression, the guitar drone, the jazzy drum! everything is perfect! the lyrics are a work of art! THAT SONG CHANGED MY LIFE

(and when i listened to it live... tears and happiness at the same time)

  • Esta canción es alguna "versión" de Into the Void, porque me recuerda mucho a ella, sobre todo el principio

  • Another great addition to a great album

  • I really like this song, and I really like NIN. I showed this to a kid I know at school, and he didn't like it at all. Then guess what? He told me to listen to music like "I Gotta Feeling." He said that's good music. How come so many people these days only listen to pop music!?? Ugh...I can't stand it! NIN FTW!!

  • @olizelda Because that's all people hear anymore- on the radio, the tv-everywhere. i'll admit the black eye'd peas are OK, but compared to Nine Inch Nails, they dont EVEN compare. Nine inch nails made music that saved my life- lets see Will.I.Am and fergie do that :P

  • @olizelda Agreed, next person to tell me Lady Gaga is better than NIN is going to be answering to my foot for being an ignorant moron who fell into the over hyped music we call hip-hop, sure, it has a good beat and it sounds catchy, too bad you didn't know Lady Gaga also does Classical and that The Fragile Album is one of a kind even in this unique industry and Trent Reznor is a God for defying the Corporate big men to the very end and still conducting One of a Kind Masterpieces.

  • @VanAlio you cant say that she doesnt have talent though. have you ever heard her sing and play the piano? she is fantastic. you may not like her style, but you cant tell me that she isnt amazing at what she does. comparing her music to this is like comparing apples to oranges.

by the way, hip hop basically rap, dumbass. lady gaga does not rap :)

    cha cha!

  • @xxthatswatshesaidxx Agreed, I like her piano work a lot.

  • @olizelda that kid sounds like a dork

  • @olizelda their ears are closed. that's why.

  • Ha, same bassline as Into the Void, I like it.

  • I've listened to this album in whole and in pieces for the past 8 years and in that time no other album has had such an impact on me emotionally. Sure downward spiral is a great though this album leaves me speechless which is for the best I guess. I'll just put the album on repeat. My personal favorite song is "The Day The Whole World Went Away".

Still one of the only albums I own on c.d.

  • The song of my life.

  • This will forever be the song that makes me feel better about my grandmothers death... The lyrics are mind blowing and make me cry.

  • the song that saved Reznor's life?

Possibly. He was in a dark place. He wrote this while in that hut or whereever it was, almost suicidal.

    He married Mariqueen there.

  • chef-d'oeuvre !

  • My absolute favorite as well.

  • My absolute favorite!

  • The grooviest and most accessible song you'll ever hear with a piano in the 3/4 time over a drum & bass pattern in 4/4. It's one thing to conceptualize a musically advanced idea like that, but it's another to create one that actually SOUNDS musically sensible. This genius was too good for big radio...they generally don't like to play songs that are structured expansively enough to actually allow the musical ideas to develop (god forbid). This takes me back to a much better time for music.

  • Downward Spiral was an epic album to describe what some of us can really go through in life, but The Fragile is a masterpiece and yes is way underrated, I fucking love this album, it takes my mind, body and soul to different dimensions like TOOL's Lateralus album takes me to parallel universes. And remember, these bands are all we have left to real fucking music these days, no one carries this kind of creativity, reactivity and sheer genious for creating the best music ever!!!!

  • beauty in simplicity...i swear no-one can beat Reznor at constructing truly memorable music....we salute you Trent!

  • oh man..... i got a hair up my ass and looked this song up. first time in 10 years ive heard it and it still makes me cry like a baby. call me emo i guess

  • @BillMoyerisntmyName i must be emo too then....

  • play this at my funeral

  • 158 'likes' / 1 'dislike' /// Nine Inch Nails is the way to go!!!!!

  • estos tipos son grosos en serio

  • I swear man, im 18 and i have to say trent reznor is one of the greatest muscians of all time. he creates music and sounds that just mindblows me. no one else has created what he creates.
