  • Thinking about it, that'd be the best job ever being one of the medics in those ambulances, not like they'd ever do anything, maby couple times a year.. be awsome

  • Wat about all this poor horses uno the ones that actually put the most work and effort in the ones that are too yound to race like that all the horses the went down in this vid and wer most likely killed the ones that have no choice the ones that MAY not want to run the ones that wer shouted at to run the ones that MAY just want to be loved and not race the ones that are forced into pain the ones that few care about. :,(

  • @XXBenitaXX64 Racehorses are treated like royalty. Maybe not at bush tracks, but the majority. Horses cannot be forced to do ANYTHING they do not want to do. In any style of riding. I am a huge racing fan. Have been for 11 years. However, I am not ignorant. I do disagree with running horses too young. Some disgusting trainers called Butchers will run their horses full of painkillers. Unfortunately, that is all that those outside of racing see. It is a beautiful sport, but it has become corrupt.

  • horse at 2:47 broke both her ankles

  • @dboot90 Yeah...sux

  • lol watch?v=YNoh3Xi8pvs

  • At abotu a little bit before 2:48 the back horse apears to have broken both legs and you can see him flailing his broken leg..looks HORRIBLE.

  • The horse at 2:44 in the back that falls after he falls HES LEGS are just flapping looks like he broke both front legs?Does anyone knw if he was out down his number looks like its 5 or 3

  • It's great to see your dad, and Ron Warren and Cowboy Jack again!

Also, thanks for transcribing the audio CC. ;-)

  • @TheKnightSky No problem. Did it help?

  • @matttchapman

Of course. Every little bit helps. :P

  • that shows that we must respect horses and realise how dangerous horse racing is, great mini doc, wonderful, when that jockey was dangling there, i was so hoping the horse would stop and throw him back on his back and bring em to hospital.

RIP to those who were killed in the sport.

  • @brocolims Thanks for watching.

  • people down there should start indain relayin. check out the world championship in sheridan wyoming.

  • the guy in the green is right. if ur scared it will show on the track. what i do is just clear ur mind and have fun. dont think bout wipe out or it just might happen.;[

  • Two jockeys die a year . . . that's sad. Two racehorses die a day from injuries sustained while racing, even worse. The sport is dangerous in general, for horses and riders. The horses are what stand between the jockeys and the racetrack, so if they get hurt and go down, then things will get worse. It's the horses that need protection, for two deaths a day vs two deaths a year . . . what's worse?

  • @VampireHavenCreator well if they would wait a few years to race them they might not have to worry about it "AS" much because older horses are more devoloped but yet again they dont give a damn about the horses they just want the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • @barboro1 shut up you dont have a clue!!!!!!!!!!

  • loves how nobody said anything about how many horses died and for the person that said those whips dont hurt your full of it let me it you with one and tell me how you like it the jockeys have a choice to race the horses dont

  • @barboro1 EVERY horse is powered by WILL. These horses LOVE to run, if they didn't, they WOULDN'T, it's a mere human against a 1200 pound ANIMAL. Who do you think is stronger? And oh, those whips are actually being redesigned to be less damaging. Old whips with poppers made of leather caused some horses to get welts. Look at the new poppers, big, fat, long, they spread pressure. I've hit my leg very hard with those whips and it doesn't hurt, so a Thoroughbred won't have any pain.

  • i just love how they say how many jokeys get hurt but nobody gives a hoot about how many horses die when they didnt have a choice to race or not jockeys have a choice to go out on the race tracks horses dont if a jockey gets hurt its there own fault if a horse gets hurt its the person that made if run i used to want to be a jockey until i realize they raced the horses way to young and how many horses died from it but nobody seems to care about the horses

  • Thank u for showin others that what we do is very dangerous. I dont race nemore due 2 getting prego. i stated racin at age 12. I only raced ponies but it was competative racin. I was moved to actual thoroughbreds at age 14. I stop when I was 18. in those few years of racing I have broken my wrist, 4 vertabre in my back, two vertabre in my neck, smashed my pelvis, fractured my skull, n broke every rib all before i turned 16. i wouldn't trade those years 4 anything. I'm tryin 2 get back into it.

  • and women

  • Great video, I have a newfound respect for jockeys. I knew what they did was hard and dangerous but this vid gave me a whole new perspective. Well done.

  • @robinaboy Thanks!

  • What about the women? Can you make a video about them?

  • oh my god! The horse at 2:45 has broken his legs!!!

  • @Lhenny4 When they break their legs like that it makes it easier to walk up and shoot them. Then, the French get some nice horsie meat hamburg!

  • @anooseholay Please, let's not discuss horse slaughter as a "positive" manner. There is nothing good about horse slaughter, for if us humans didn't over breed horses, then it wouldn't be necessary to send them off for meat. I have an ex-racehorse, who, had he not been saved when his leg was broken, would have either been euthanized or sent to the slaughterhouse. And please, don't harass Lhenny4. I am sure that Lhenny4 is aware of what often becomes of injured horses.

  • it. But there isnt. We jut have to roll with the punches and pray for the best when the unfortunate happens.

  • horse racing. Its no different than a pitcher in baseball getting nailed in the face by a batter's swing or a boxer getting the crap beat out of him because a match went to far. We accept these risks. Horse racing is no different. It poses no greater risk of danger than any other equine-related sport. These animals are beautiful. And it kills me to see them get injured just as much as it does anybody else. If there was a sure fire way of preventing an accident from occuring, no doubt would use

  • world. Theres nothing we can do to stop it. Jockies know that every time they put their foot into that stirrup and get into that starting gate that there is a possibility of them getting injured or even killed. They accept that fact and deal with it. Owners and trainers know that everytime their horse steps onto the track for their race that their is a possiblity of their horse breaking down and getting injured or killed. But they accept it because its part of the risks that come with

  • than the jockies. When I see people call this sport cruelty, although I do see where they're coming from when they say that, I cant help but think that they simply just dont know the facts. Is it a dangerous sport? Yes, but what sport doesnt pose one form or another of danger? Do people and animals die in this sport? Yes, just like they do in show jumping, cross country, and just about any other equine related sport. But is it cruelty and abuse? Not necessarily. Accidents happen in the sports

  • What Im about to say I just want people to hear me out. I'm not pointing fingers or calling names. Every sport has its risks and dangers. We accept that. Horse racing is no different. It has its dangers just like every other sport in the world. These horses are carefully bred for this sport, possessing the qualities that make and adapt it for this sport. To be perfectly honest, the horses are usually treated better than the jockies are and recieve better treatment (hospitality wise)

  • Have followed racing for 25 yrs. and God Bless em' but have never heard of any of these Jox?.Hope they all retired healthy n whole!

  • at 2:49 whats the race? that would be horrible.. look at the horse especially in the back limpin and his leg broken and danglin.

  • Like he said '' A beautifull animal '' , why do they wanna kill or hurt this beautifull animal ?! The horse should not be whipped as much as long as , It ought to be free but will be ridden at a relaxed pace and not be used in races .. Poor horses , not poor pepole !

PS: Im from norway , sorry bad english ! : )

  • poor horseys

  • jockeys these days have to wear a kevlar vest in australia where i live it is mandatory

i work with race horses i love the animals it is truly exciting i am just learning to ride

and i am loving it i want to be a racehorse trainer i am a stable hand at the moment

it is the best job ever please make one dedicated to all the stablehands and trackwork riders i would love that thanks very good video

  • @mojo5228 Thanks. I will keep that in mind.

  • If you want to complain about racing then why don't you do this crap on Nascar! Shoot the crashes are all people watch it for!!!!!!

  • @Serena152973

I know that it is dangerous but if you ask a jockey they wouldn't chose another occupation.

  • thats good

  • Oh God, was that last Jockey okay, it looks like he was hurt bad and the horses. It's unfortunate when these accidents happen

  • @EveDarkAngel666 Yeah...the last jockey was ok. That was my dad.

  • nice job chappy like this video very well done five fingers up.

  • @UncleRonski thanks man

  • These horses are bred to run, and it is what they know and eventually learn to love. Just as barrel horse love to barrel race, just as broncos love to buck, and just like some assholes love to criticize something without even thinking. For many people, such as myself, who are in the race horse industry, it is our way of life. My horses are in the tip top condition! better than if they were in the wild, apparently many of you don't understand thoroughbreds, they are high maintainance horses

  • and you don't even know about a good horsemanship. horses arme animals and not machines. but as lon long as there are people like you who say they they love horses but ruin them in the same time, a lot oft horses have to get injured and die. now ask yourself: who is the asshole??? I never hit or hurt a horse in my life. my horses have never been ill. an what aubout you???

  • Goodness.Everyone is so quick to judge this sport.Yes it is quite dangerous, but think people would the horses do it if they really didn't want to?If it wasn't something they were born to do?They love doing it just as much as MOST of us love seeing it.How do you explain all the horses that have FOUGHT for their right to be named champion?Seabiscuit.Big Red. Ruffian. Smarty Jones? They had to have the heart to win.And watching them on the track will always bring me to tears. It's a beautiful thing.

  • You're talking about horses as if they were humans. They h,don't think like humans and they don't think 'I want to be a champion'. They don't run because they want to win, they run because there's a stupid asshole on their back that's hitting them all the time and because teir instincs tell them to run if there are other horses running around them.

they are born to be free and not born to run in a circle!!!

  • yes im with you all the way my horse was a racer and almost became a champion but he got into a accident and that was the end.

i hate those people who just judge horse racing it is a wonderful sport sure i lost my horse out of it but i forgive and go on but still cry to this day over it and i know everytime i go to the track i always wish i could do racing and feel what it is like and i love those movies to about seabiscut and so on.

  • This is so graphic

  • Actually, horse racing these days is a lot safer for jockeys, and more importantly the horses than it used to be. In the UK especially, the guidelines for horses is a lot better. Horses undergo test BEFORE and AFTER races and it 3 vets agree that the horse isn't fully fit then it won't race and if its after then the owners are told not to race for a certain period of time. There are dangers, but there are dangers when you get on a plane, but people still do.

  • Wow, I never knew horse racing was so dangerous. Crazy stuff.

  • Man! I never knew Jockeys went through that. Why don't they wear some sort of pads? Because of added weight? Seems like something could be put in place to help protect them better.

    Nice film by the way.

  • Jockeys now have the option to wear a kevlar vest, but it's not mandatory. The extra weight the vest weighs means that much more weight they have to lose to make weight so a lot of jockeys don't even wear it.

  • That was intense!

  • o man. those falls were horrible.

  • OMG! some of the footage in this is so intense. I feel really bad for the one horse who's leg was floppy as he was trying to walk after a fall.

  • Yeah...poor horse. That is a whole different doc. Talking about what happens to the horses and what they have to go through. But at the time I made this video. There wasn't the awareness of danger to horse or jockeys like there is nowadays.

  • Great Doc!!!

  • I always wanted to learn how to ride a horse. I tried it once but i guess i was a little too scared...

  • This really shows a side of horseracing that I never thought much about. I guess I was too busy trying to figure which horse(s) to bet on when I used to go to the track...wow. Is that Santa Anita?

  • There is footage from Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields primarily. My dad used to ride at Santa Anita.

  • infact this is is a team sport... both jockey and horse gotta work together... Wow so many injuries... Great DOC!

  • look at all those short guys.

  • lolololololol

  • Excellent video! This was really interesting. Very well put together.

  • OMG!! :( At 2:47 that poor horse!! His leg is flopping around where it shouldn't bend! Prolly got put down. Poor thing. I hate this sport! Horses are always getting hurt just for human enjoyment!

  • How can you say that ?

geez showjumping,Cross country, polo ALL have dangers even just genreal riding you could be cantering in a field when your horse suddenly takes a bad step and breaks it leg and has to be put down.

Horseracing is JUST as dangerous as any other sport wouldnt you rather a horse doing what it natually does running than to be put in a stable and kept there ALL day long like some owners do to there horses atleast racehorses get excellent treatment.

  • Yes I realize the others are dangerous, but in horse racing they are pushing the horses to there maximum are they not?

I just still hate to see this kind of thing. I really only see these kind of accidents in the racing, not the jumping and stuff like that.

The video made me so upset when I saw the horses leg, that's why I spazzed lol.

  • they arent really pushing the horse to its maximum because a horse is a 1000kg animal and a jockey weighs like 56kg so who do you think is going to win?

i am sure if the horse didnt want to run it would soon stop or chuck the jockey off.

just look at barbaro he got injured coming out the gate but kept running as soon as his jockey relized something was wrong he pulled him up as soon as he could you even see his jockey crying over it thats how much they care for there horses

  • I've been on the backside of the track and believe me when I say more accidents happen there than actually on the track itself. I've worked with horses and know their mind enough to say that thoroughbreds are really stupid. They aren't the smartest breed and don't always listen to the rider. I've ridden a few in show jumping and they give you a run for your money.

  • When the horse breaks down, it is their life. The jockey is the one with the whip, right? That means one of them might not be into racing that day!!! Guess which one...

  • without a whip there are MANY more dangers... with stirrups so short jockeys can't control thier horses... whips are easily compared to a steering wheel in a car. and don't hurt the horse

  • ur just pointing out bad things

  • thats cause it said something like

' how do the manage to get themselves to work everyday?' i think :L

they said men cause women are so cool it doesnt take effort to girls to get to work haha

  • We have already been through this before, but I will repeat. I apologize for not mentioning women jockeys. I made this film six years ago and regret forgetting to pay homage to women jockeys as well.

    Chappy

  • oops soz i shud hav checked tht. my bad lol. thanx for the heads up :D

  • the horse at 2.50, that made me cry.. I feel so sorry for the poor thing and every other horse who has given its life for humans "entertainment". I feel sorry for the jockeys too, though they did chose to do this themselves knowing that it might cost them their lifes..

  • This was well done. Far better than the two I made about narragansett Park! There was a jockey at Gansett in the 70s who also held on to a horse's neck after the horse tripped. He ended up finishing fourth.

  • This was Very well done, thank you

Matt Chapman. You are a talented guy. Have you made any other docs?

  • No, this was the first one. However, I have another I need to finish up about suicide.

  • I watched the video. Amazing. Did the injured jockey make the video and if so is he/are you an artist now? There's no other sport like horse racing. The best of all horses race. The best of all humans ride them!

  • cool video !!, sorry about what i said before, about not beliveing u !!! :((:((

( in the other video )

Horse Racing is a very sad thing, and for me to ride horses every week, its actually pretty hard to believe that horses are dangerous !!! c u around !!

  • The horses dont choose to run they r nt

born to run. They r just breed to run.

  • why do people give this thumbs down?? It's so very true.. Horses are not born to race, jump, reining or type of competition. They aren't born to have someone on their back, though they're breed for it..

  • Thats like saying working dogs aren't born to work. Yet every underexercised working dog becomes destructive because he ISN'T working.

Horses have been used and bred for transport, sport, and other humanistic uses (even food) for so long that they wouldn't exist in their current form without us. They ARE born to work, ride, race. Show me a thoroughbred that doesn't want to run & I'll show you a husky that doesn't want to pull a sled.

Thats not to say they couldn't clean up the sport.

  • That they are breed to do it still doesn't mean that they are born to do it, and choses to do it. That doesn't mean that they don't love what they do. Stll they are not born to do it! Every horseback rider has to accept that it is very unatural for a horse to carry a person.

And dogs aren't born to work either, they're bred for it. Still doesn't mean that they don't like their job.

  • Anyone thats worked with these animals knows they DO in fact "choose" to do it. Every time a sled dog gets loose, it "chooses" to run 20 miles, till it gets hungry and comes back to camp. The same with these horses.

They are, in fact, born with the instinct and impulses to do this. Horseback riders have no need to feel guilt or shame for riding, so long as they do so safely and in a fair way to the animal.

Horses that don't like to run don't win races. Its a simple concept.

  • You're not even reading what I'm writing. As I said they do like what they do, otherwise they wouldn't do it. But they're still not born to do it, it is not their own choice to do this. I didn't say that riders should feel guitly for riding, I love horseback riding. Though I do have to accept that the horse is not build or born to carry me around.

  • You seem to want it both ways, and I'm afraid it just doesn't work that way. Either they are "born" to do it, or they aren't, in which case they wouldn't "choose" to do it. Either they are born to work or not. Those that display natural impulses to do such things are used for these activities.

One doesn't use a chihuahua as a scent detection dog, one uses a bloodhound, as they are born with the desire & ability.

Saying it is "unnatural" is implication of guilt for making them do so.

  • It is both ways. No animal is born to work, it is not in their nature. It is in their breeding, upbringing and training.

Your example with chihauhau and bloodhound shows this, they both decent from the wolf, but because of different breeding they have different talents. This doesn't mean they were born to do anything but being a dog.

If horses were born to race, jump, doing dressage or whatever, then why do we have to teach them how to do it? All they are born to do, is being a horse.

  • We don't "teach" a horse how to jump, or a dog how to detect scent. You ascribe far too much to the human factor in these mutually beneficial relationships we have with domestic animals.

A dog already knows how to smell. We just teach him how to tell us what he's smelling and where. Same with horse skills. Sports and such are extensions of their natural behavior, otherwise they wouldn't have developed as they have.

Horses jump, run, and race in the wild, if you've forgotten.

  • Horses only jump in the wild if they really have to. They don't race each other in the wild. They run with each other to play/show off, or to get to an other place or get away from something.

Yes they are born with the ability to run, jump, doing dressage, smell. But it is down to breeding that they become so extensively good at it, And that one horse is good at jumping, while an other dressage. A showjumper has to learn how to jump with a rider, keep it's balance, improve it's technique etc.

  • You're conveniently picking and choosing what you *want* to believe.

Horses jump in the wild fairly often, and usually in play. They do race and run with each other as well, for play and fast getaways.

And your showjumper example is right in line with my bloodhound V chihuahua example. So then, now you agree with me?

I'm not sure you know what you're arguing against, only that you know you want to be against it somehow. At any rate, I'm pretty much done on this thread.

  • Still not born to do it, they are bred to do it. There is a big difference.

  • Insisting does not make this true. The difference is only your assumption, which you can't seem to explain well.

You apparently need me to say directly that I won't be returning again to comment. If you need the last word so badly, go for it. I won't be back to read it. Cheers.

  • Look at it the other way that you keep insisting that an animal to do something specific for a human doesn't make it true..

No matter what animals are not born to do anything for humans, it is not in their nature.

  • This is my last comment to you, since you clearly don't *want* to understand.

If running and jumping weren't in a horses nature, we wouldn't see them doing these things in the wild... which we do, in fact, see. Domesticated animals are born to function inside human society, for both parts benefit. The horse is protected as a species, and we have our uses of them.

This is not my 'insistance,' this is how it is with every domesticated animal. Ignore it all you like, though, and goodbye.

  • If you knew just a tiny bit about the horses anatomy, you would understand that the horse is not born to do these things with a humanbeing on its back. And I'ver said that they don't have the ability to jump, run etc. in the nature, only that they're not born to do this with a human.

So instead of giving your "you don't want understand" etc. try to actually think about things from an other perspective..

  • then horseriding must be cruel then is it we make our horses carry us around a field or in the arena doing what WE want to be for OUR pleasure

we make a horse jump when WE want to jump.

  • Horses refuse all the time, if they don`t want to jump, they won`t jump. Also, the horses love what they do, why else would they love their owners and/or trainers so much? Why would they come to the fence and nicker a greetin?

Besides its kinda an exchange, the owner or trainer takes care of the horse, ensures safety from preditors, feeds the horse, makes sure they`re comfotable and warm, so in return we get to ride.

  • Look at min 4:57. The horses leg is broken and it is still running. So you thing this horse loves running so much that it even runs with a broken leg?

  • Possibly. IDk why horses keep running after they breakdown.

They probably wanna win, or at least try to finish the race.

Black Gold broke down (because the owner was too stupid to get his quarter crack fixed), and the jockey just couldn`t pull him up until after he crossed the wire.

You`d think if they broke a leg, they`d stop, but they just don`t. Kinda part of what I admire about horses, when things get rough, they just keep trying, no matter how much it hurts.

  • 5*****!!!

  • I hate horse racing so much =(. It's a so horrible sport!

  • omfg i nearly cried at 2:48 i couldn't believe the horses leg. OMG ='(

  • Yeah....it's pretty nasty. I didn't make this doc for the weak at heart. The horses also get injured obviously. That would be a different documentary and not the message I was focused on for this one. Maybe I'll make another with that as the focus in the future. Would you people like to see that?

  • Yes!

  • They break down every day

  • 2:48 horses leg is flopping.

  • was würde es verändern, die gerten zu verbieten? einer wäre erster, einer letzter.

  • every people that works in the racing industry do it for the passion of horses. it's obvious, jockeys are passionated, if not, they would't do what they do more than one day. it is true also that this sport can be awful for some horses and that's sad but it's the risk of racing. I also believe that racehorses are well treated and respected. I love horses and I love horse racing, I think it's a beautiful sport. Accidents happen...I admire the jockeys for their courage and passion.

  • i honestly think that the horse racing industry can be more safer and have more better care, and treatment and another route for injured horses rather than death

  • The racing industry is turning itself inside out trying to make it safer for both horse and rider. California has mandated that all major racetracks install $8 to $10 million dollar surfaces on their tracks in an attempt of making racing safer. The only horses that they put to sleep are those with such catestrophic injuries that they can't save them. Would you spend from $100 K to $3 million to by a horse, spend another $30 to $40 per year to train him and then destroy him without good cause?

  • I'm with you. I'm riding horses too, but mostly only for small jumps and dressage things. It's quite strange to see how accidents can happen really quickly, but many other sports are dangerous too.

I just love horses and I don't think that they're that unhappy and stuff. I once listened to a documentary that said that horses only want to run at high speed.. Strange, but it's also cool to see and feel a horse in topspeed.

  • ya ! horses need to run, not to stay enclosed in stables ! that's good for them, and I'm sure they love it !

of course, it's important to take care of them as well, and control and limit their hours of training to make sure they don't go over their capacities.

  • Jupjup, I'm always happy to see horses on large patches of land with enough space, shade and water <3 (and that they run the hell after each other sometimes to play)

Another yep. I also heard somewhere that sometimes horses fall down because of an heartattack or something after running too fast for too long o.o I hope that it doesn't happen that much..

  • since coming out of ponies about 5 years ago i have always owned ex-racehorses and personally i love them, they are such talented and generally warm hearted animals, i would never get another breed now.

  • Since 1940 145 jockeys died. Think of all those horse who have died since 1940!! Probably more that 200 :(

  • this is an amazing doc and everything in it is so true about how dangerious the sports in but how gr8 of a love we still have fo it

  • Great documentary, Matt! You guys really risk a lot every day and definitely have my respect. Those breakdowns are so sad. My horse, Tara, was a retired racer and brood mare. She wasn't another Ruffian but I loved her with all my heart. Colitis took her away from me. I subscribed btw!

  • around 2:50 horse broke the front leg u can see it flopping around..wow only 145 what about how many horses they killed in them races. that no one cares about.

  • Horses love to do this sport.. Your horse has to love it else you wont win.. Most of them live long and very good lives.. My horse is an ex-racer and lives almost better than me xD

  • My horse is an ex-racer and DOES live better than me!

  • Some one should put you on a race horse on the gallops molly and you'll soon find if he wats to run or not. These people love their horses and some look after them better than they would their own kids. Your unedcuated comments are uncalled for. Racehorse are bred to run in the same way a dog is born to bark. Take away his nautral craving and you get one very unhappy horse. Accidents happen in ever walk of life and we kill more people driving in a day than horses are killed in races in a year

  • Bred to run not born to run they was born in wild they would only run when they had to not when made to by the thing on there back..sure some love it but we are over breeding and not looking at the leg issues that are popping up everywhere. thinner and thinner legs and faster and faster speeds make for more issues..sad.

  • Good video. The risks and rewards.

  • What about the HORSES who put there lives on the line every time they race & they don"t ask 2 do it they r made 2. I hav had horses all my life STUFF THE JOCKEYS

  • Do you mean, the slaughter house? Even one of the winners of the Kentucky Derby ended up in the slaughter house. These poor animals have no choice and few have a good end. It is very sad.

  • Where the heck did you get this "fact"? I looked up every horse to win between 1970 and 2009 nearly everyone retired to a stud/breeding career unless they suffered a freak accident (one a heart attack, one a broken leg and one was a gelding). The one horse with a mysterious end was Ferdinand. He was shipped to stud in Japan and disappeared. As a result of his UNKNOWN end, the Ferdinand Fund was started to provide retirement for racers that didn't become great studs. One horse. In 40 years.

  • I saw a video here on YouTube about Ferdinand and charismatic! Really sad and stupid end of a life! :'(

  • Do you honestly believe that Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, War Emblem, Funny Cide and Smarty Jones were SLAUGHTERED?

The horses DO have a choice whether or not to run. You try forcing a horse to run flat out when he doesn't want to. It will hurt when you hit the ground. Yes there are some dishonest trainers that run horses and sell to dishonest places but many DO have a good end. My horse (profile) decided at age 5 that he was done racing. He was sold to a trainer for a new job

  • think this way if they dont run fast enough then where does he go? u think they take that slow stud to the farm adn pass on his babies? where does he end up maybe if hes lucky he gets a new home maybe a jumper or better yet a back yard horse odd are in his favor to end up on the plate as well.

  • If they don't run fast enough then they are sold. Do some end up at auction due to bad trainers/owners? Of course. Do most end up in new homes to be retrained? YES! Many tracks are starting to put rules in place to protect failed race horses from auction/slaughter. And what happens when a show horse doesn't do well? A jumper isn't fast enough, a hunter doesn't have to movement, a trail horse doesn't like trails ,a saddle seat horse without the carriage or an Arabian without the look?

  • some well maybe where ur from but lots do where i am from have loaded many good horses along with the bad onto the meat truck ...most racers around here that end up at auction go to kill seen many nice quarter horses going now...guess the amount they are needing per day cant be fixed with just the old beat up amish horses anymore...

  • Race horses DON'T get that choice!! If you're learned and trained to run when you're 1 year old you don't know the other choices! Because you're only trained to one thing...to run!

  • We have to remember that they are athelets too. Just like us they will have aches and pains. They do have a choice, even through some say they don't. We have had horses that just couldn't or wouldn't race. So we had to find a better occupation for them.

  • OMG 2:46 - 2:50 look at that poor horses leg in the top right

  • Yeah...pretty harsh.

  • I sort of feel like crying now...

    poor horse...

  • insane -.-

  • Yet still we ride our horses. We train and condition them to help minimize risks whenever possible. Never forget that millions of dollars are spent caring for them at a level that is incredible!! Many advancements occur to vet medicine thanks to the care of these horses. Yes, the jockeys have a choice and the horses maybe don't. I've seen how these horses behave if they are not ridden. They love what they do as much as the trail horses and pasture pets love theirs.

  • 145 jockey's have died? How many horses? I am sure that number is just staggering. I cannot help but feel bad for the horses. So many injuries that make the rest of their lives painful. I like watching horse racing on occasion but all the injuries and deaths are just so sad.

  • So sad but so??? thats the just of it., every action has re-actions and consequences, unfortuanetly thats how it goes

  • I really think american throughbred racing, will suffer alot more accidents, then turf, I mean look at how harsh the track is when its slightly damp, and they wonder why there are so many horrific accidents, maybe americans should think about turf racing

  • There is horse racing in America on the turf. It's just not as popular as the dirt. Good news is most dirt tracks

are being converted around the country to a safer synthetic material.

  • Thank you.. this was very good. My mom was a jockey. I was raised in the Thoroughbred world. It has been said that our horses were taken better care of than my brother and I. :)

  • we got something in common:)

  • Thank you so much for making this. Very informative. I really enjoyed learning more about the jocks and what they go through. =-]

  • Your welcome. I'm glad you approve. Of course, now there is that show on Animal Planet called JOCKEY. But keep in mind that I made this mini-doc five years ago before people were so interested.

  • so horse racing realy is the most popular racing?

  • If you look at it in terms of spectators...yes...there is a huge draw. Of course, any given horse track during a season will be open five days a week and that lasts for months.

  • Horse racing is so fun, yet so cruel. its hard to determine which. horses shouldnt be whipped for 1 1/4 -2 miles, and if they fall they usually dont heal.

  • I rarely see horses whipped the entire race, usually only the last furlong (1/8 mile) when they are heading for the wire. My heart breaks when I do see horses that fall, however I would NOT support any bill that tried to ban it. Horse racing is an amazing sport, the animals are treated better than most people these days, and when accidents do happen to them, their medical bills are insane; it can go into the tens of thousands. Who spends that on the family dog? Not many people would/could.

  • Do you know what horse it was that fell at 2:42? Definitely broken front right leg. Was curious who it was.

  • i think it may have been george washington.

  • That race was filmed 15 years before GW was even BORN. This race happened in Illinois and GW broke down in New Jersey.

  • DOES anyone care how many HORSES have been killed?!?!?

  • Of course...but this documentary is about a different subject. The impact of the sport on jockeys. When I made the video six years ago that was more relevant to me cause my dad was a jockey. Get it now?

  • i do, i care more about the horses than the jockeys... the jockeys do have a choice, the horses don't.

But i get your point Matt :)

  • Fair enough. Thanks for the comment.

  • the problem is obvious horses should not fall on a flat track but all i see is dirt tracks in the uk we have no dirt tracks only some fibre sand tracks and rest is all grass a natural surface for horses to race and it very rare and almost no horses trip or fall one on flats tracks in the uk

  • You put a pack of racehorses in a pasture they will run most of the day . Even 2yr olds that never seen a race track .They are an athlete too. I'v Brok a lot of racehorses 12yrs in this biz . I mis my life I'm a jockey to retierd now from a brokn neck but still can walk. graet video This is a fun sport for horse and jock and fan thank you jim

  • omg OWNED!!

  • I'm sorry, but I couldn't care less about the jockeys. They get to CHOOSE to race. The poor horses don't get that choice. What an abusive "sport" horse racing is. You should NEVER race a 2 year old horse and the trainers and jockeys should know better. What a bunch of sick, uncaring people.

  • You are entitled to your opinion. Your views are shared by many. i obviously do care about jockeys cause my dad was one. Things are not nearly as black and white as you try to put it however. The horse racing industry is one of the largest advocates for equine rights believe or not. For all the controversial nature of racing, alot of good things are done to help them as well.....like their contributions to the fight against horseslaughter for human consumption.

  • horseA123, have you ever considered that the race horse industry is who is responsible for breeding the horses that are racing? So, if you get rid of the HR industry, you'd be getting rid of the horses as well. No one at the track is ever happy when an accident happens, and it is unfortunate. But, there is a lot of good things that come out of the industry as well. The horses, for the mos part, are very well taken care of. The dangers are definately a part of the sport, though.
