I'm going to conclude that due to the fact that I've heard Tipitina playing in the background sometime in the 1996 movie Flipper, this song has been reminding me of the beach!
If some decide to put another another professor's song off the youtube that I put in my favorites I'm gonna devote my life singing Tripitina in their ears my whole life. And my voice is like scratching chalkboard with your nails.
Rolling piano boogie, relaxing and stimulating at the same time, a wonderful elixir, taken aurally. So glad he was around to make records like this one, and to inspire others to sing and play New Orleans rhythm and blues too.
I've never heard this version of Tipitina. I've heard Allen Toussaint's version, and recently Hugh Laurie. Both are awesome! But this is awesome as well!
To anyone who thinks that Professor Longhair is dated, let me asurre you I now live 1 block from "Tipitinia", Professor Longhairs homage club and see Dr. John, Marcia Ball, Alan Toussaint, John Cleary, all who owe their base to the master, Fess. BUT THEN ALL OF NEW ORLEANS has this same "taste/flavor" in music and it's everywhere, on the streets, in the clubs, neighborhood bars, If you truly want to experience New Orleans, get out of the French Quarter and into the streets & bars or clubs!
I'm not even gonna pretend, I only know this song from Hugh Laurie's interpretation (I never was big into blues before), but hey, if it gets ya listening to the classics and the greats, who cares how you came about it?
@Siibillam That's cool. If "House" expands your musical world it's only for the better. He also has some pretty good music in the background of his show.Don't really know if it's his choice or the producers. Professor Longhair is worshipped in New Orleans , because he's mainly the one who created the N.O. funky style way back in the 40's. The Meters are legends themselves being the house band at Sea-Saint studios in the 70's, and George Porter is the best bass player in the world.
Fess and James Booker - two of the greatest New Orleans pianists ever - and there have been some great ones - Fats, Dr. John, Eddie Bo, Henry Butler, Tuts Washington, Allen Toussaint.....
Its good to see such legends on this tube media format. I first picked up one of his records in Australia 30 or so years ago and turned a lot of mates onto the Professor about the only CD available here was his Crawfish Fiesta which had the songs listed in the wrong order. He is a true legend and it was good to see that Keith has one of his albumns on the inside cover of his book Life.
LOL can't understand a word he is singing, but it sure sounds cool as hell! These so called music makers of today could take a few lessons from the old timers. 8-)

Me miserable? Au contraire, as the Frenchman said when asked if he'd dined on the boat. I received all kinds of love: still do. My comments were not personal, but political, but would indeed be approved by those of us who have experienced life. As for “equality," well, it all depends upon what you mean by equality. I was talking about art as communication, I suppose: giving, as opposed to taking; creating as opposed to destroying, etc. Your petulant “biography" of me is fatuous.
Conservatism and so-called “free" markets (which release only the bloodsucking corporations from bondage, while they enslave the countries they operate in) destroy not only creativity but will, if left to their own devices, destroy life as we know it on this bloody planet. What is conservatism but selfishness and greed elevated to the status of a religion? What do conservatives believe in? Inequality. Selfishness has never created great art.
@hellesterne What a miserable human being you are, whining wa-wa-wa-wa. Poor little baby, mommie and daddy never gave me enough love, so the rest of the world with all its capitalism and conservatism is the reason for my miserable existence and bad fortunes. Go suck and egg! and while you're at it - GROW UP! You talk of "equality" - when did any system of socialism or communism EVER give equality to its people? If it were a sports team, liberalism would have record of 0 Wins, 18 Loses.
Louloubee, conservatism and free markets do not destroy creativity...leftism's big government and corrupt markets filled with collusion destroy creativity. Music died with promotion of sex & personalities over talent. & many of today's no talent leftists push an agenda instead of learn how to make music. Music was going downhill long before the 1980s. Technology replaced real instruments & repetitive dance, punk & rap just destroyed it faster. You can't blame that on the right.
I never got a chance to see Fess. Although I was chronologicaly old enough to (and living in New Orleans) I was lacking in my musical taste maturity. Youth is indeed wasted on the young.
@boiapanetera . I agree and thank God for You Tube. Through it I've found great musicians I'd either forgotten about or never heard of in the first place. People like Professor Longhair and going way back, Amos Milburn. I got to hear and sometimes see, Piedmont style guitar players, New Orleans piano players, early rock 'n' roll, the true 'golden age', to me anyway, of country music, the 40's and early 50's...and I learned that musically, these days, nothing is getting better than it was.
Most people who deride the current state of music just don't know how to find good music. I admit that popular music is shit by and large, but there is some truly great music being made now just as there was then. Just a bit harder to find now is all.
Where's the so-called "great music"? PRAY TELL. CUZ THERE AIN'T HARDLY ANY!!!!!!!!!! SINCE REAGAN AND MONEY BECOME THE GODS TO WORSHIP, MUSIC AND CREATIVITY HAVE TAKEN A BACKSEAT. MONEY, CONSERVATISM AND GREED WIN OUT EVERY TIME
@louloubee100 Oh sure, I'll bet all those talentless rap stars and musicians aren't making any money and think capitalism is such a horrible thing - while they shine their $50,000 heavy gold chains and medallions.
what is that sound in the background from1:09 to 1:10 ? reminds me the most brutal analog synth run I've heard back in '97 but it was an acid party :)
Hello world im from NEW ORLEANS BORN AND RAIESD 1965 MY MOTHER ALWAY,S PLAYED PROFESSOR LONGHAIR GREAT MAN ITS SAD HE DID NOT GET T HE FAME THAT WAS DO TO HIM BUT HE LIVES ON IN OUR LIVES LET,S NOTFOR GO TO THE MARDI GRAS LONG LIVE PROFESSOR
This isn't really The Meters--it IS Art on keys and Leo Nocentelli on guitar, but that's not Zigaboo on drums and it's not George Porter on bass. the more we go ahead in time the more I found my self going back to the great artist of some time ago..those who played REAL music, with REAL voices and all the passion in their hearts. Today new music is very limiting and boring, not much creativity or even effort for that matter..just push a button, add some filters and a star is born...it also helps if you have a great make up artist. Sad times we have to come to live.
@boiapanetera I don't like alot of hip hop music. one day a friend said i just did not like black music. I showed him my record collection. Now he is into the meters and the fess
@boiapanetera I fucking hate it when people say things like this. Yes, this is a REAL song played by a great artist. And yes, there's pop music today that is manufactured and lazily written/performed. But there was just as much shit back in the day; Fess never sold records and Pat Boone was topping the charts. Meanwhile, there's also fantastic mainstream pop music and fantastic underground music today, just like there was back then. The equation is the same; all that's changed is the package.
@chowfun18 You might hate it but it's reality...it is not the same, just look at how an artist goes on stage today: mic in one year, earpiece in the other, lip singing, filters, reading boxes, and protein bars...all this sounds and looks very sterile and prepackaged.
@boiapanetera - We all end up going back to appreciate good music. Sadly, this is one area where technology has not improved but lessened the quality of music. So called "artists" are quick packages, spending the majority of their time working on their abs while an anonymous man in a booth writes all the cliched songs for these people, and the producers walk away with millions. Sure, there are underground bands with talent, but the great melodies are gone. Hey, at least there is American Idol!
@boiapanetera You're just not looking hard enough. It is true that mainstream music of yesterday kicks ass and that most modern mainstream music doesn't even qualify as art. However, I find that there is more creativity, expression, and experimentation going on in the "underground" world than most recorded music from way back when. Just because old good music is easier to find than new good music don't think it doesn't exist...you have to dig pretty deep sometimes.
You are also very limited and boring... Open your mind and your ears
@boiapanetera dude, mainstream music back then probably sucked as much dick as that at the moment, probably more. There's a billion sweet bands out there that are kicking ass in more ways than you can imagine and forging new and interesting music, and times haven't been better for independent distribution. Any person that rocks can get their stuff out there and across the world from their bedroom.
I agree. People always judge today's music by looking at the mainstream. There is great music being made out there, by great musicians, you just have to know where to look because you're not going to find it on the radio or MTV. Sometimes the record companies do a good job and put great music in the spotlight but that's definitely not the case today.
This is great music but unfortunately Professor Longhair died at his home while rehearsing for this concert they went ahead as a tribute to Professor Longhair see the documentary "Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together"
Respectfully, he is in fact singing much more than your quotated(yet not completely accurate ,lyricly), comment. It is'nt unusual for people to , not comprehend poetry, sounds&structures unfamiliar to them, i.e.(language & music etc.) BTW, my response to YOUR comment is b/c you appear to love it. I Love it too. "Tipitina little mama wants a dollar too" I implore you, What is this song about for you?
Yeah I wasn't really trying to quote him exactly..
Just quickly explaining that it's not Creole, but more "sing song" words..
I dunno what the song is about, but I'm guessing it's a kind of "Kids song" for adults.. Probably Tipitina was a prostitute or represented one.. Just a guess.. I lived in New Orleans for two years, and it's pretty wild down there. Who knows? :)
ps. My ex is the drummer on all the Dr. John songs from this gig.. I met all the Meters and Dr. John. Hear a lot of great music!
In Dr John's book "Under a Hoodoo Moon", he says it was pig latinish street slang used in New Orleans to allow communication without the police knowing what they were talking about.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
IF ONLY that guy would the f* shut up and stick to his great playing. IF there were at least a meaning but there ain't. trulalalotjhhdlznbobgmabbtwhoaaaadamnit gimme a break.
Thanks for posting this . Im from La. and can totally dig this. This is a good version. He was feeling it. Is that a Neville brother on the other keyboard? Looks like it.
That would be Artie. Also Leo Nocentelli and George Porter are easily visible. Thanks for posting this. I grew up on Valence st. The Meters/Nevilles are like family to me though not relatives. This song (and bald head) are two of my favorites.
Just about every New Orleans movie ever made (and lots of Gulf Coast movies) have at least one 'Fess song in the soundtrack. In fact, a few years ago, there was a LADIE'S DEODERANT commercial out that had "Fess in the background! If he was only around to collect the royalties!!!! FESS IS THE GREATEST!!!!
Is this song played in the movie 'Flipper'? Because I remember hearing this song or a similar song in the background when I watched 'Flipper'. I haven't watched Flipper for years.
I hope so...I liked the movie Flipper. Have you watched it before? If so, was it Tipitina that was playing? Because I thought I heard it or something Similar (but I did recognize 'Do It Again' by Beach Boys).
Great song! I just got volume 2 of Soul Jazz Records 'New Orleans Funk' compilation! Not as good as the first, but a nice little sequle all the same! No Longhair on it unfortunatly, but some gems from the Crescent City!
I like Long hair, and I like Dr. John a lot, and I love Ray Charles...but as B.B. King said it...and you know it don't get much more rhythm and blues than B.B. King...Elvis was the best. He said that, and if you want to look it up, do it. It was on a television broadcast. I think he was right.
But dude, Fess showed the way back in the 40's, touring with Dave Bartholemew, and with Fats Domino also in the band. And there's just a big difference between New Orleans anything and Elvis. I don't think there's actually any comparison. They both shine, but in different galaxies.
Walking with my dog, with my MP3 and with "Tipitina" I feel the life, the people, like a great and happy blues. Thank you, Professor. (Sorry, I am from Spain anda I don´t write English well).
Tired of the stupid dumbshit comments about Elvis, people need to grow up!! Love the music and the way it makes you feel. If you don't like an artist, like me on any rap, just change the damn station. By the way this is a fun song by a great artist.
... and on the seventh day, Fess rested.

naaa you just have to digger a lil deeper than the surface of pop culture for authenticity but its been like that for a coons age
beh84 1 year ago 2

This is great music but unfortunately Professor Longhair died at his home while rehearsing for this concert they went ahead as a tribute to Professor Longhair see the documentary "Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together"
with Allen Toussaint and Tuts Washington.

Meant to say "Heard a lot of great music"
Sadly, I never got to hear Fess tho.. I was only about 15 when he passed away I would guess.
I can't get enough of him! :)

Oh and he throws in a few "Oooh la mala wallas" too :)
Just makin up words :)
Like the equivalent of saying "Sha dooby dooby doo"

It's french creole in the original tougue
wiclark5 2 years ago
He's not singing in creole.. He's just singing "Tipitina tra la la la, teeny mama tra la la la tee na nay"
debs4mysweetbaby 2 years ago
Respectfully, he is in fact singing much more than your quotated(yet not completely accurate ,lyricly), comment. It is'nt unusual for people to , not comprehend poetry, sounds&structures unfamiliar to them, i.e.(language & music etc.) BTW, my response to YOUR comment is b/c you appear to love it. I Love it too. "Tipitina little mama wants a dollar too" I implore you, What is this song about for you?
bigredlover77 2 years ago

Great song! I just got volume 2 of Soul Jazz Records 'New Orleans Funk' compilation! Not as good as the first, but a nice little sequle all the same! No Longhair on it unfortunatly, but some gems from the Crescent City!
HimlersRing 3 years ago
I like Long hair, and I like Dr. John a lot, and I love Ray Charles...but as B.B. King said it...and you know it don't get much more rhythm and blues than B.B. King...Elvis was the best. He said that, and if you want to look it up, do it. It was on a television broadcast. I think he was right.
BJustinBrasfield 3 years ago
But dude, Fess showed the way back in the 40's, touring with Dave Bartholemew, and with Fats Domino also in the band. And there's just a big difference between New Orleans anything and Elvis. I don't think there's actually any comparison. They both shine, but in different galaxies.

Walking with my dog, with my MP3 and with "Tipitina" I feel the life, the people, like a great and happy blues. Thank you, Professor. (Sorry, I am from Spain anda I don´t write English well).

Hang on a minute! Stole the black mans' music? Whats that supposed to mean?
The King label for example might have signed a few black guys but half their catalog was covers of white country music.
Otis Williams & the Charms went straight for a current Tin Pan Alley song made by Cathy Carr and covered that one.Fortunately she won.
