It was just Saakashvilis weak overview and the hope of an Allied Intervention against the RF. He clearly oerestimated the possible reaction of the US and Europe at this point. He really ecpected that the US would send troops to fight the russians on georgian ground, drive them back and eventually regaining both territories. Russian and South Ossetian forces had been provoking Georgia for days. The Ossetians were firing at Georgian troops with artillery and killed 2 Georgian peacekeepers in a Georgian village, while Russian jets flew over Tblisi, provoking the Georgians into shooting them down and attacking Georgian forces fighting Ossetian agressors. The Georgians had enough and attacked. Although Georgia started it, Russia provoked it, since they wanted a pretext for their agression, but most were not fooled.

Saakashvili fired salvo after salvo of missiles on south Ossetia in an effort to demand their cooperation in recognising themselves as part of 'his' Georgia.
That's illegal under the terms of the Geneva Convention and against EU member regulations.

It was just Saakashvilis weak overview and the hope of an Allied Intervention against the RF. He clearly oerestimated the possible reaction of the US and Europe at this point. He really ecpected that the US would send troops to fight the russians on georgian ground, drive them back and eventually regaining both territories. The Ossetians were firing at Georgian troops with artillery and killed 2 Georgian peacekeepers in a Georgian village, while Russian jets flew over Tblisi, provoking the Georgians into shooting them down and attacking Georgian forces fighting Ossetian agressors. The Georgians had enough and attacked. Although Georgia started it, Russia provoked it, since they wanted a pretext for their agression, but most were not fooled.

Bush and Nato have done everything possible to drive a wedge between the West and Russia. Georgia did launch the attack. I listened while it happened and the Western Press buried it. And now McCain and Obama are on the anti-Russia bandwagon. Russia merely defended themselves.

@uastirji Uh Russia's population is dying out because of the abortions and contraceptives they use over there. It is estimated that by 2050 Russia's population will have disappeared.
