There's alot of variables involved in hitting hard and, to this day, the question of why some fighters hit hard and others don't isn't completely answered. Also, just because Fedor doesn't have a low body fat% doesn't mean the muscles underneath the fat aren't there (and strong).

Fedor does some fairly oldschool training, like kettlebells, hitting a tire with a sledgehammer, etc. He has kind of a --not sure what to call it--"old world" strongman physique. Nowadays if you don't have chiseled muscles and a V-shaped torso, people don't think you're strong.

I read where Russians and easter block people have the highest % of fast twitch fibres and this is why they dominate strength and power sports such as power lifting, strongman and Olympic lifting.  It works the other way as well and that is why Kenyans and Ethiopians dominate in long distance running. They have higher % of slow twitch fibres.

I beleive they also had a television show that featured Carl Lewis, where they discussed difference in muscle fibre makeup between races and ethnicities. And why particular groups seem to dominate specific sports. Sorry if that wasn't very helpful.

I think it also has to do with those magic 10000 hours. In short, it means that you have to invest 10000 hours of training for almost every sport to be able to compete at the highest level. Count football, hockey, powerlifting, track and field, any sport. If someone wonders why those guys from Nigeria or Ethiopia are good marathon runners, they've been running 20 km per day just to get to school and back. It's also a matter of training in a specific regimen besides genetic makeup.

Shorter stature means you don't have to go as deep into the weak part of your range of motion. Tall people rarely make good deadlifters.

Actually, tall people DO make good deadlifters. A good deadlifter has to have long arms, thus minimizing the distance travelled by the bar from the ground to the lock position. Nevertheless, a tall person has disadvantageous body mechanics for bench pressing or for squatting. Just look how a short person does a deadlift: they employ that so called sumo-style deadlift stance, specifically to compensate for the shortness of their arms.
