I was in Leningrad and Moscow in summer 1987 during Gorbachev's years..
We went to the giant department store in Moscow...GUM..
The store shelves were empty...but oddly they did have a lot of bread and giant chocolate bars...subsidized by the state for about 2 cents each....the USSR subsidized certain foods and other food simply was not available at any price...like meat, fruits, dairy...
Finding a restaurant in Leningrad was a real scavenger hunt...no fast foods.
Back then, when this was happening, I was in first grade elementary, in Saudi Arabia.. There, my parents work because the pay in our homeland was very low..
It was different then.. It felt weird because you can see adults heaving a sigh of relief, like they just got from some serious war..
Nothing much has changed in the psyche of that generation..
Sadly, most of the kids in my generation don't even have an idea of what happened then..
For some strange reason, in this documentary (as in other accounts I've seen or read) one step is missing: the first phase of attempted reforms was called "ускорение" (or "speeding up of the economy"); "perestroika" appeared later, when the leadership understood that they can't "speed up" without some structural changes.

I am Lithuanian descent in America and am moving to Lietuva next year so I have strong feelings on this. I would have supported the autonomy of all republics involved. The Soviet Union could have continued however like a European Union type organization. The states within should have continued socialist polices with market reforms and not have annihilated all remnants of the social programs and state enterprises of the old system. Health care, education, natural resources should be state run.

I'm communist at heart, but communism only comes through a long transition from a socialist system, however, a planned economy will never reach that state. On the other hand free market, supply and demand based economics with socialism are the correct way to go about it, somewhat similar to what we are seeing in China, especially with the insane growth of 10% yearly, however, with no totalitarian aspect as is present within China.

I'm not a Russian but I don't know what you guys feel about what I'm saying, but I do think Russians were given too much freedom too fast without first constructing basic institutions to help people manage the change that was introduced by Gorbachev... he should've done something like China is doing... though I'm a very staunchly anti-Communist, I do disagree with those who say that Communist nations should let their people go to polls and vote... that will never bring democracy... it's anarchy.

We (most of the 15 Republics of the former Soviet Union, or maybe all 15 of us, to an extent) are in a 20 years long decline.
We did grow overall, and enjoy higher living standards, but in comparison with the growth rates of other emerging states, it is obvious that the states of the Former Soviet Union are in a decline.
I feel I was born and raised among the ruins of a great Empire. Unique feeling really.

I am Lithuanian descent in America and am moving to Lietuva next year so I have strong feelings on this. I would have supported the autonomy of all republics involved. The Soviet Union could have continued however like a European Union type organization. The states within should have continued socialist polices with market reforms and not have annihilated all remnants of the social programs and state enterprises of the old system. Health care, education, natural resources should be state run.

I'm communist at heart, but communism only comes through a long transition from a socialist system, however, a planned economy will never reach that state. On the other hand free market, supply and demand based economics with socialism are the correct way to go about it, somewhat similar to what we are seeing in China, especially with the insane growth of 10% yearly, however, with no totalitarian aspect as is present within China.

@totakeke Sadly everything was centralized. On the side of military, the centrally planned economy helped a huge amount, it was also excellent in turning a fully agriculture country into an industrial behemoth within 10 years. Sadly, on the consumer side of things it was very inefficient.

The U.S. then breaks up, some states become countries. Lots of land disputes, some wars. The super states like Texas and California would incorporate surrounding states by force if necessary. Overall chaos in the region like what was unleashed after the break up. Poverty doubled and tripled in Eastern Europe.
