My favorite childhood TV memory! What I wouldnt give to go back in time and watch this on our little black and white tv in our little house in Brooklyn park with canned pears and buttered toast for lunch. I was so exited when he would do this song.
I got Roundhouse Rodney's autograph when he was doing a Saturday show at Bullhead Days in Waterville during the late 1960's. The great thing is how he signed it...he laid my autograph book at his feet, did a handstand, and then while balancing on one hand, signed the book with the other. Those who saw it clapped for what seemed like 10 minutes; just incredible.
Oh, I LOVED this show as a kid. And, like many kids, I totally cracked up watching this sketch. Minnesotans are weird, and proudly so.
Had the opportunity to meet the real Casey Jones (a.k.a. Roger Awsumb) a couple of times, once as a kid, years later as a mother of a small kid, when he was promoting the video this came from. This reminds me to get my video converted to DVD!
Only thing is, when I was a kid, Casey Jones looked OLD! Why doesn't he look OLD here?! ;-)
Dr. Demento played this. I sing parts of it when the radio plays "Winter Wonderland," which along with Jingle Bells are the two holiday songs I'd love to see banned from the airwaves. There's another version, "Walkin' 'Round in Women's Underwear," by Bob Rivers, but I don't quite dare belt that out with my wife on hand. Most things she does not find funny. For Jingle Bells, Da Yoopers did "Rusty Chevrolet," so I sing some of that when Jingle Bells comes on. You can hear the silence.
Casey Jones RULED baby. As well as Roundhouse Rodney. If you are at least 45 years old and lived close enough to the Twin Cities (me, St Cloud or more specifically Sauk Rapids) to get KSTP and never heard this at least once between Thanksgiving and Christmas, you were not paying attention
OMG.. I can't believe I found this here ! My younger brothers, sisters and I came home for lunch from school. We watched the the Casey Jones show while eating lunch. Then hopped on the school bus for a return trip to school. I thought Casey Jones and Roundhouse Rodney where so funny. The "I love onions" spoof was great too.
I LOVED CASEY!! I used to watch him every day! He bought a pizza joint on 50th in Mpls which was just around the corner from where I lived. I would go in and drink sodas. Sometimes he'd be there and he'd sing to us. What an genuinely awesome guy!
I met Casey Jones at Jensen's Super-Value in Coon Rapids when I was in kindergarten. I told him an elephant joke, and he acted like it was funny, and gave me a Twinkie. To my everlasting pride, Casey told MY JOKE on tv a few weeks later. There will never be another like our old buddy. God bless you, Casey!
I saw Casey at Jenson's many times (see my other comments regarding his appearances being like rock concerts, at least the night time one- were you at that one?) And free Hostess product!!!
Remember when Little Oscar came to Jenson's in the Weinermobile? All he gave out were crappy plastic rings with his mug embossed on 'em. He smoked a cigar and was like "Get away kid, ya bother me..."
I went to Hamilton Elementary, and Northdale JHS. I grew up on Norway St...It was a night appearance, and I remember the train-looking stage that was set up. I was in awe- my first TV star!
Oh yeah, Vivian Vulture always scared the crap outta me! My older siblings were lucky enough to be on the show (though I did appear onstage on Ch. 5's "Dialing For Dollars" with my Mom in about '66 or '67, I woulda been about 3)
Carmen was hot! Used to have a 45 she made called "Harry The Skunk", cool pic sleeve lousy record.
Remember Pete Lee on Ch. 11? He had a hand puppet & would pull on the girls pigtails with it & carried a long boom mic in the other hand.... after school, mid '60s?
Back in August of 1969, Dave lee had his Omar the aligator hand puppet ripped off by visiting kids to the show. he begged for it's return, and to the best of my knowledge, nobody ever coughed it up.Anyone know the story,of the fate of his pupput? Somewhere, out there, after 39 1/2 years,it may still exist, stashed away,in some closet or attic.
Come to think of it, I do remember the Omar the Alligator scandal! I just recall the sadness of the loss of his friend....
I also remember when Dave Lee left in the very early '70s they replaced it with a really limp show called "Fred & Friends", featuring a balding overweight puppeteer in psuedo-groovy doubleknit fashions with a couple very lame puppets. Certainly none of the cool that Dave Lee exuded (didn't he have a Beatnik beard ala Maynard G. Krebs?)
dont remember that later show at all. I recall the omar rip off, took place in August of 1969. Around September or october, he came on with a newly made omar hand puppet, that looked rushed. I think it took something out of him. Tis a mystery of the twin cities, unsolved for nearly 40 years.
@mjhuffman1956 The show was called "Popeye and Pete". On the only independent station at the time WTCN 11. I watch TN Taters back then also. Ahhh the good old days of being a kid.
@mndandy Do you mean Dave Lee from "Popeye and Pete?" His puppet, Pete the Penguin, would also tug on the boy's ties, which were always clip-ons, and thus always came off.
@mndandy Oh ya! I loved this show when I was a kid. Popeye & Pete was good too. Liked when Pete's puppet would pull on the boys ties and the girls pigtails. lol
When Casey & Roundhouse used to appear at our local shopping center, it was like The Beatles showing up! They would even bring opening acts with, like some Scottish bagpipers or maybe Henry Height (an 8'0 guy who arrived in a VW Beetle).
Anyway, they would sing a few songs, do a few routines, then best of all- throw Hostess products out into the audience!
I remember a nighttime parking lot appearance they did, they were up on a big stage; I think of it as my first rock concert!
ok, now, do you remember the ol' Clancey & Willie show on in the am b4 school? They would show 3 stooges movies & cartoons, do lil dumb skits, Carmen the nurse? Have bunch of kids on, lots of boy scouts troops & brownies/girl scout troops........sidekicks name was Willie Ketchum......duh,,,,took me a while on that one! They don't make 'em like that anymore!
I watched Casey Jones & Roundhouse Rodney everyday! How cool to see this video! Grew up in St. Pauls's rockin' eastside, moved out in 1991. I remember ma & dad took us to go see Casey jones at a place called Frontier Town? We got to ride on a stage coach & stuff. Fun back then!
I've spent the last 35 years asking if anyone remembered "Frontier Town", NO ONE ever did- until you! Thanks for confirming that it wasn't just a figment of my imagination. It was up on Hwy 65 in what used to be called Johnsville, but I think is now just part of Ham Lake or Blaine. I remember the stage coach, panning for gold & the outhouse with a catalog for butt wipe.... real authentic old west! It closed in the late '60s & sat like a ghost town 'til it suddenly vanished in the mists of time.
@mndandy I can't believe someone else remembers "Frontier Town!" I have photos of my siblings and me taking pony rides there. I don't remember the outhouse - must have missed that.
I grew up watching Casey and Roundhouse every day. I still love this bit, how bout I love onions, lippy lois, Roundhouse in the pumkin and Casey on the ceiling. I love the birthday song we still sing it at our house. Rip Casey and Roundhouse.
And Mel's Matinee came on right after Casey Jones, remember that?

In case people don't know this is a cover. The original artist is Seattle's children's show host Stan Boreson. This guy sounds a lot like Stan.

@brendalg4 - I think it's pretty obvious he's lip synching to the recording. ;-) I still enjoyed it a heckuva lot as a kid.
