I had a 68 stang jut like the one in the movie, but I wrecked it. Only payed 500 $ for it in 1975. I loved that car. 289s are the best

It's because they used the small block mustang and a big block charger. 1968 they could have used a 427 or 428 cobra jet. But because of the jumps and handling they went with a 289 small block. So they had to supe it up to keep up with the 440 charger.

i read an article in a motorhead mag back in the earliy eighties , it was written by one of the stunt crew that they bought those chargers bone stock and ran em....they had to re work the heads and other things to get the 390 ford to even run with the 440's....thats says alot....and you know the stangs were quite a bit lighter to offset the cc difference...390 vs 440

Chargers are big and heavy.the mustangs used in the chase(yes there was more then one)where 390gts and on a track or a car chase the mustang would out handle,brake and accelerate any charger.You should do your home work, the charger's truck suspension(torsion bars and leaf springs) made it more durable then the mustangs which did fail during filming but then again chargers seem to fly though the air pretty good.

the charger kicked the mustangs ass if you watch the documentary it is mentioned.the mustang also had many things beefed up so it wouldnt fall apart.charger is pure stock kick ass 375 hp mustang eating machine!!

Man they handle so terribly! i heard that the stuntman in the charger crashed it when he pulled into the garage after scenes because the handling was so shocking. still love the cars tho. faults kinda give them more character.

I agree that the car is only as good as the driver.But in reality a 440 is built to race against the Hemi.And was built for those who could not afford the Hemi. So the Mustang 390, would never have stood a chance.

Pretty admirable job of wheeling that Dodge through the turn at the 2 minute mark. Having owned one, I can say they don't handle so great. Straight line? Well, thats another story, and it always ends with "goodbye".

The stunt coordinator has been quoted several times in print that no matter who was driving the Mustang the Charger ran away from it. After Steve overshot the corner, the films insurance company pulled him from the car, said no more high speed stuff. The guy you see behind the wheel of the Dodge is Bill Hickman, the actual stunt driver.

The Charger R/T came with a 440 Magnum standard, but a 426 Hemi as an option. "Eaten for lunch", I don't think so.

no, they most certainly did NOT put a mouse in the Charger. Bil Hickman did have to pussyfoot the Charger to let the mustang keep pace though. You're not really hearing the acutal engines in the cars either. The foley was done at Riverside raceway in a cuple different race cars.

The term Foley is not correct. Sound effects is the right term. A Foley artist is someone who adds everyday sounds- like a door opening, or footsteps on snow.
