If they would've went with a Chevy the chase would've been 5 seconds long. All you would've seen was a Crapmaro with smoke coming out of the hood on the side of the road.
@hogwashsentinel It's the same scene but shot from three vantage points. First from the bad guys POV, then from Bullitt, and finally outside the cars.
ever one likes one or the other of the cars that good but the real fastest car is the camera car it had to run faster than both the cars .Any one know what it was? aA1966 big block CORVETTE the best.
It's because they used the small block mustang and a big block charger. 1968 they could have used a 427 or 428 cobra jet. But because of the jumps and handling they went with a 289 small block. So they had to supe it up to keep up with the 440 charger.
i read an article in a motorhead mag back in the earliy eighties , it was written by one of the stunt crew that they bought those chargers bone stock and ran em....they had to re work the heads and other things to get the 390 ford to even run with the 440's....thats says alot....and you know the stangs were quite a bit lighter to offset the cc difference...390 vs 440
"I'll tell you this," said Max Balchowsky, "I was really impressed with the Mustang after I got done with it. I didn't think it'd make that much difference beefing it up. Later, we took both cars out and went playing around with them over by Griffith Park (near Los Angeles). The Dodge, which was practically stock, just left the Mustang like you wouldn't believe." Ron Riner has similar recollections. "The Charger ran rings around the Mustang. "
What ever car your a fan of is cool , but this is classic at its best, those cars a real bad ass machines, each with its own prowess, just a great era caught on film , no restos in that film real cars right out the factory,
One of cinemas greatest car chase special effects was to speed up the film to make it seem like they were going fast but were really only going moderately fast.
Chargers are big and heavy.the mustangs used in the chase(yes there was more then one)where 390gts and on a track or a car chase the mustang would out handle, brake and accelerate any charger. You should do your home work, the charger's truck suspension(torsion bars and leaf springs) made it more durable then the mustangs which did fail during filming but then again chargers seem to fly though the air pretty good.
The "baddie" who is seen driving the black Dodge Charger is in fact doing the driving for real. He's the late Bill Hickman,a stunt driver. But is McQueen doing HIS driving for real,I wonder?
some...when he over shot that turn and had to back up the production decided bud ekins should handle most of the rest...you know, mcqueens pal that jumped the fence in 'great escape'...
And how many hubcaps did the Charger lose, like 6?
If you watch closely at the end when the Charger runs into the gas pumps. You can see a cloud of dirt where the Charger is driving behind the gas station as the pumps blow up.
Is it just me or is Lieutenant Frank Bullitt the silliest, most preposterous name for a movie-cop ever devised? Hey - you know he's a badass - he's named after ammunition.
The VW (and other vehicles) show up so many times because of the different cameras filming different angles during the sequence. You see them from inside the Mustang and Charger as well.

the charger kicked the mustangs ass if you watch the documentary it is mentioned.the mustang also had many things beefed up so it wouldnt fall apart.charger is pure stock kick ass 375 hp mustang eating machine!!
why r the streets in san fransico so hilly. i feel sorry for ppl who live at the top and dont have access to a car.i wud hate walking up them every day.
Man they handle so terribly! i heard that the stuntman in the charger crashed it when he pulled into the garage after scenes because the handling was so shocking. still love the cars tho. faults kinda give them more character.
I agree that the car is only as good as the driver. But in reality a 440 is built to race against the Hemi. And was built for those who could not afford the Hemi. So the Mustang 390, would never have stood a chance.
Doesn't matter: In stock form, both were handling pigs, ESPECIALLY the Challenger, and both had to be heavily modified to handle even as well as they show'm!!! Thank GAWD those kind of American pigs are not being built anymore!
Pretty admirable job of wheeling that Dodge through the turn at the 2 minute mark. Having owned one, I can say they don't handle so great. Straight line? Well, thats another story, and it always ends with "goodbye".
The stunt coordinator has been quoted several times in print that no matter who was driving the Mustang the Charger ran away from it. After Steve overshot the corner, the films insurance company pulled him from the car, said no more high speed stuff. The guy you see behind the wheel of the Dodge is Bill Hickman, the actual stunt driver.
no way the charger was alot heavier than the mustang, besides the stang had better suspension and better controlling. the stang would beat the charger
...don't care what yall think...I still think the chase would last a little longer and more fasinating had they used imported VWs and Datsuns with better fuel economy!--McQueen was awsome---the man was bigger than life--could drive anything, do anything!!!
I can't believe that after 40 years of the movie being released, people are still saying "Did anyone notice the same green Beetle show up like 4 times?". Yes people, its been out 40 years, millions of people have noticed it, its a very well known part of the chase!
in an apples to apples comparison, the 'stang would have a 428cj. Then it would eat the Mopar for lunch. An Ls6 Chevelle or a L71 Vette would win big. Lets not even mention the L88.......
Well, sometimes cars may have better engines and might just be faster but its really how someone controls whatever they are driving, if your stupid your wasting gas if your smart your still wasting gas but making great use of it
no, they most certainly did NOT put a mouse in the Charger. Bil Hickman did have to pussyfoot the Charger to let the mustang keep pace though. You're not really hearing the acutal engines in the cars either. The foley was done at Riverside raceway in a cuple different race cars.
