  • i wanna be in a trock band :/ excpet i can't play anything well...or write music :/ xx

  • Go Eileen!!

  • gotta love that good old time lord rock. :)

  • I do wish to be a writer so watching your vlogs will have to be my start :)

  • lol Time Lord rock band ;)

  • you're a fast talker....

  • who dislikes these videos

  • @blehblahtherm105 squids of anger.

  • Does anyone here an extremely high pitch sound when the video plays?

  • "A Successful Time Lord Rock Band"

    Kind of an oxymoron, huh?

Just kidding, I love you guys!

  • I have one of the 42000 books that you signed. And I read it. And it was awesome. Thank you for sacrificing the well being of your hand for my education/entertainment.

  • @AsbelTheSoporific 42,000 books? DAMN that's a lot. That's signing 1 book every second for nearly 12 hours straight.

  • @AsbelTheSoporific Are you sure your copy wasn't one of the other 108,000? (I'm not saying it's not but I was thinking the EXACT same thing. And then I started to wonder.) Also, I agree.

  • Ilene sounds like an escape from the Labyrinth :)

  • @CharleyHayes08 Yeah, pretty true (for me especially), considering Chameleon Circuit the only sucessful Trock band. Actually, I think Chameleon Circuit is the only, period.

  • @PolkadottedAngels I don't think they're the only but they're certainly the best :)

  • Thank you for this video. It relates perfectly to my new video series, and Looking for Alaska was one of my favorite books of 2008.

  • thumbs up if you've ever been to the cheese cake factory

  • So, I don't know how to put this gently, but, perhaps finding a good tailor would be a good move? That shirt just does not fit you correctly and it makes me sad. :(

  • @proof2580 jesus. shut up you vain fuck. easy to make judgements on people when we can't see you

  • @BJMCM11 It was constructive criticism. Also, why did you call me a vain fuck, if you're only angry because you can't see me to pick holes in my appearance as a reprimand?

  • @proof2580 because its was a vain thing to say. Its only constructive criticism. Don't need to see you to say that as a reprimand

  • @BJMCM11 Vanity is superficiality in excess. I just said the guy's shirt doesn't fit, there's nothing overly superficial or vain about that. I'm a tailor, it's what I do.

Thinking my comment was less valid because you couldn't see me: now that's vain.

As for the rest of your reply, well you're just repeating exactly what I said.

  • @proof2580 No offense, but why does it really matter?

  • @lilDgoes2mars Why does clothes fitting matter? Well, why aesthetics matter is kind of a complicated question..but it matters to me because I'm a tailor. I make clothes fit well for a living.

Why does the definition of vanity matter? Well, it really doesn't, but you know, someone was wrong on the Internet and i was on a long train journey.

  • @proof2580 Oh, I wasn't commenting about the vanity conversation. I was commenting about your first comment about clothes-fitting.

Think about it. John probably knows his shirt doesn't fit. But why does it matter? He vlogs because he wants to share parts of his life with his fans. And, I'm sorry, but you kind of took advantage of that. I am glad that you told him about his shirt politely, though.

It's not vastly improving anyone's life, so why say it at all?

  • @proof2580 Eh? Looks fine to me..

  • thank you so much for this.

  • Whoa you wrote Looking for Alaska? I like that book!

  • @nagemsupreme That he did, friend.

  • @nagemsupreme this comment makes me happy :) start watching these videos. they'll make your life a whole lot better!

  • Thankfully, I am lucky enough to have just graduated college in the last six months, and I have a job, doing what I love :)

  • @vlogbrothers On 1:40 u said u were a "student's chaplain"?.I dont get it.R u actually certified as some sort of cleric?.

  • John, I've graduated last month and I have been trying to find employment for the past week. I am in a foreign country, a very expensive bus, train, and plane ride from the comfort of my family, and since last month, I've been waking up with the feeling of CMAPT in my stomach. I've always been stubbornly independent, so thank you for helping me realise that I may need an Ilene in my life. And thanks for saying it gets better. I'll be working on making it get better faster.

  • John, I'll be graduating soon, and I already feel that crushing terror. Thanks for summing up all the things I get to look forward to.

  • OH MY GOD CHAMELEON CIRCIUT. God, I'm never getting a good job. I don't have talent besides talking and memorizing useless facts. For example, Matt Smith was in a play called That Face and in one sceen, he had to wear a dress.

  • So basically if you aren't Charlie McDonnell, Liam Dryden, Alex Day, Ed Blann or Michael Aranda, your life sucks?

    Pretty much.

  • @CharleyHayes08 Edd Plant?

  • @pineappleowls Yes, but his real name is Edd Blan...

  • @CharleyHayes08 yep that sounds pretty accurate.

  • Funniest thing is that I want an Ilene of my own and have ended up being an Ilene to other people instead. Gratifying at times, annoying at others...

  • I love the Chameleon circuit reference. believe it or not, watching their videos is how i found you guys.

  • Chameleon Circuit.

  • I still can't believe I have one of those books! XP

  • You should be a voice actor

  • Have you ever said "Come on Ilene!" to her, John?

  • In school today we had to say what our "dream job" was, and I could just hear John's voice in my head, and was so tempted to put down "Trock Star".

  • Ever heard of space between words?

  • Ok... Thumbs up if you're one of the many people (including me) who graduated in Graphic Design type stuffs and worked (or works) in a call center. Cause this is so weird.....I just feel like I need a statistic here...

  • As soon as you "took it down a button" an ad popped up and covered your chest. XD

  • "....unless your in a successful timelord-rock band your probably not doing what you want!"

  • Graduated. Unemployed. Trying to find hope and I found this video in my favorites. I hope I can find my Ilene. This is one of the hardest times in my life. :/

  • @lostfeeshes so sorry it's so hard! that moment suckd for me too. but it doesn't last forever. I see on this board SO many people in that situation-- but I know so many successful adults who say they experienced that moment, it lasted a little while, and then led to really brighter times. I feel like being ready for change is the way it begins.

  • @numbersmasher Thank you so much kind stranger! I truly appreciate your words. I can't wait for the brighter times.

  • To clarify: because he is his kid, not because he threw up on his face.

  • His kid is so lucky...

  • i am 17 and i am sooooooooo bored already there is no way i will let myself get bored wen i am an adult

  • 7 months into this two years..... does it peak sometime and get better toward the end of the two years or is two years the peak when it starts to get better?

  • @scharfy for me, it was 2 years and then I was really ready to make aggressive decisions, like move out of Pomona, and that's when things started to get better: after I made these really drastic moves that totally changed everything... took 2 years for me to get the guts... that's my story, anyway

  • @numbersmasher I'm applying for out of town jobs as we speak... eeek. Thanks for replying and DFTBA! (your reply was way awesome too, thanks)

  • You are a bit of an Ilene to all of us! :D No pressure!

  • Looking for Alaska is an awesome book, my 8th grade teacher even recommended the book to the whole class while reading the explicit parts.

  • I feel like this video implies that high school is not a CMAPT world. Which for me would be wrong. And for that I am sad.

  • I am in a successful Time Lord rock band. Or, rather, I was. Will be. Tenses are troubling for us, okay??

  • I think this advice applies to more than graduates

  • TIMELORD ROCK BAND? WHERE?!

  • @LightWithinTheNight They are called chameleon circuit. Search them :)

  • I found my Ilene His name is Walker and he is one of my best friends :)

  • I saw Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children at the bookstore the other day, on sale and as a noted book of 2011, picked it up, and thought "why is this familiar?" and walked away without giving it another thought. I mean, I was there to buy TFIOS, not other more peculiar books. NOW I KNOW.

  • John, I love you. You made me feel optimistic about CMAPT.

  • ENDING AT THE END?!?!!? GENIUS!!!!!!!!!

  • This video came out almost immediately after I entered college. I'm like, "Really? I just got used to this, and now I have to worry about being an adult?"

  • HEHEHEHEHEHE... You uploaded this on my birthday....

Kinda depressing, to be honest... but that's fine.

  • I will turn 18 in a month + 10 days. Thank you for the advice.

  • I GOT MY BOOK TODAY! Thank you thank you thank you!

  • Cheesecake Factory is delicious.

  • Like this if you're watching in 2012

  • im writing a book. its about a medieval-victorian age combat academy... and in the middle stuff happens... and then it ends...

  • An angel in my pocket in my pants!!

  • so sorry to hear about your hand! tendonitis?

    try acupuncture!

  • wow my first 2 years after college were also horrible! I felt abandoned and actually betrayed- all the people who supported me up till then suddenly pulled all their support away: instd of being a good student, I was an unemployed looser- hard to deal with- But yes things did/do get better, after those 2 years I built up the guts to move to another country, get a newspaper gig, move back and get a degree, and now have a great job- I didn't have an ilene but now i think i can be one :)

  • @numbersmasher I'm glad you found success! I hope I can too. Right now I'm strongly relating to the "unemployed loser" department..

  • two words: Peter Pan

  • Instead of this rambling diatribe and monologue why don't you tell people that college is a joke and now Uncle Sam has the implied interest to see that you go to college so you are in debt to him and him only, since your Savior Owebama took over the student loan industry. That would be more interesting than this garbage.

  • 👐 nerds up! I don't think ilene had 100000+ subscribers u just trumped her brother.

  • This is my friend's youtube account X)

  • Will you be my Ilene? : (

  • I love Ransom Riggs!

  • I'm starting my sophomore year of university (weird semester setup because of DC classes), and this both helps and terrifies me... I kind of know what I want to do next, but it's all math-science type stuff... I've dreamed of being an author since I was six. Here's hoping I can find an Ilene that can get me from here to there and help me break the CMAPT that will be life after school.

  • I watched this video again on my first night of going to University, it helped.

Made me smile so much, thank you John.

  • my sister's name is eileen, i feel i should show her this

  • So I will be graduating in May. But honestly it feels to me like a grown up job versus my irregularly scheduled near 40 hours a week at Starbucks on top of college courses and studying will be so much better that I'm not at all worried about the crushing monotony. And the idea of having regular time after work where I'm free to choose my time management and write and play Kingdom Hearts sounds awesome. Is this a bad thing?

  • @glic6616 That is the dream all college students wish to have right?

I know I want school work to end- I want to come home and enjoy all the video games I have!!

  • you knew the lady who wrote the golden rule?! :o

  • My little brother once puked in my face...my mouth was open... *Shudders*

  • 1:23

Are you making a reference to Charlie Mcdonnel? I think so! *clapping*

  • This is probably already in the comments many pages back, but has anyone considered that "An Angel in my Pocket" is one of the very few titles that both makes sense and does NOT work as a joke with "in my pants" added to the end? Well . . . kinda . . .

  • i first watched this before i discovered alex day or charlie mcdonnell or liam dryden and didnt understand the time lord rock thing, but now i find it hilarious!

  • You said you can't be my Ilene... I think I cried a little. xD

  • Fortunately for me, my boyfriend of the past two years is my Ilene and he is very good at being an Ilene.

  • i'm 27

    i can find an Ilene

    and i'm gonna kill myself.

  • @chloevian you shouldn't kill yourself. you have so much to live for.

  • I wish I was in a successful time lord rock band...

  • @PINKPOLKADOTS97 me too... want to make one? lol :)

  • @JessieLightyear for sure! we just need a super cool catchy name...

  • @PINKPOLKADOTS97 Um... Children of Time

  • @PINKPOLKADOTS97 i think he said in a successful time or rock band...

  • Yay I'm eventually on the first vlogbrothers vid i've ever seen :)

I watched this one then went back to the start of the videos, i feel proud of my random achievement

  • ...no fucking way. ...John Greene? Holy shit, I had literally NO Idea who the fuck you were. Wow.

Also, why does every young adult novel have a car crash in it? Why?

  • @dimatodd Green*

  • This video came on to youtube 2 days after I moved out of home to get my first job after graduation. I wish I'd seen it a lot sooner, because it would have made me feel a lot better about the whole terrifying real world thing.

  • I loved all the books mentioned in this video!

  • I'd be the middle grade reader in my life...

  • At this moment, and Eileen means everything..

I have the song in my head.. Sorry

  • I just noticed I havnt read a book in like 5 months! stupid new school with a boring library like all of the books are freaking 6th grade level. last time I checked I had an 11th grade reading level! Imma read your book! it looks cool! (middle school sucks)

  • When I first saw this I was well aware of how monotonous and terrorizing the world could be. Not that I'd experienced it but that adult had told me enough about it I could recite it in several different accents and two languages. This video basically taught me that I'd be screwed if I didn't somehow find a person willing enough to deal with my ignorance. Which was a little disheartening until my brother found his Ilene by complete chance. Tl:dr, finding someone to follow isn't particularly easy

  • I just began reading looking for alaska on my kindle. It is, no lie, one of the greatest books in history.

  • This video always makes me feel better. I just graduated college for graphic design, and I work in a call center. I have a sign I made on my desk "DFTBA, the CMAPT will be over someday"

  • @amorithelnania HEY! YOU GRADUATED COLLEGE WITH GRAPHIC DESIGN! *sorry for yelling :P) but I want to go to college majoring in Graphic design (I'm a freshman in high school at the moment) but could you give me any advice?

  • @amorithelnania This is almost unbelievable. Right here, me: graphic designer, worked in call center, had DFTBA on my work desk. Oh, yeah, and this video makes me feel better as well.

  • @DaniaSyberian ok i just responded to the top comment with this, but i saw you and i was like WTF MATE? ANOTHER ME!? because i studied graphic design and worked in a call center after college.... O_o

  • @amorithelnania ......I worked for a call center after I graduated from college with a graphic design (and photography) degree........GET OUT OF MY BRAIIIIIIN!

    dftba

  • @shutterhappy85 hahaha, crazy stuff happening :D

  • Currently treading the waters of crushing monotony and paralyzing terror. This is such great motivation. Now to find an Ilene..

  • Watching this and listening to Chameleon Circut at the same time? I'd say this night is a winner.

  • THANK YOU ILENE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

  • I want to be an Ilene.. but i need one, so maybe in a decade or something haha

  • Loving the Chameleon Circuit reference :)

  • I turn 18 today and i'm my first year of uni and you have no idea how comforting this is right now.

I some questions though: Where do you find Ilenes? Where do they hide?

  • This just showed up in mt subscriptions box.

    What?

  • I for one love books set at boarding schoold, and which have things happening in the middles as well as endings.

  • I wish I were in a successful time lord rock band

  • I'm still in school. This is my first year of GCSE. And it's pretty "CMAPT" too. The Crushing monotonomy of travelling 14 miles everyday to and from school, giving me barely any free time from homework, sleeping, eating, etc. And the paralysing terror of not passing my exams that will determine my life, pretty much. YouTube is what gets me through though. Seriously.

  • @CustardStig GCSEs are really not THAT important. Once you move on to A Levels, no-one cares what your GCSEs were. Revise, but don't kill yourself over it :)

  • @HannahIsUnoriginal That's assuring. Also, I think I recognise your name from somewhere else on YT... Hmm....

  • @CustardStig Oh yeah, I think you said that John should give some money to Bribry and I agreed. I don't know whether I have a really good memory or you just have a very memorable username :)

  • @HannahIsUnoriginal That was it! BriBry! Well done on your memoritory skills. That should be a word....

  • I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but did the severely cramped hand after signing 42000 books remind anyone else of the Seinfeld episode where he has to sign all those royalty checks?

  • Wow! I love that advice! "find someone who is doing what you want to do but better, and listen to them". I need that on a shirt or something now.

  • Hmm, I wasn't underemployed, but I had to work at a really rough and very poorly disciplined high school for three years. This year, I finally got to move back to my Alma Mater, a much happier and more unironically enthusiastic place. So even though I don't make any more money this year, I feel like I was promoted.

  • Blink at 0:47 !

  • I would rather spend 1000 years in crushing monotony and paralyzing terror than have a baby throw up on my face.

  • by your discription of the real world I'm basicaly liveing in it allready as of the start of university.

  • Ha ha u are funny and cute! I have 3 more years to graduate from college and I can honrstly say that im a pretty good adult. Lol

  • The funny thing is I read Looking for Alaska awhile ago and then started watching this today and made the connection lol.

You are a comical man and remind me of what my husband will be like in a few years and a very talented writer.

  • ...when john unbuttoned his top button it somehow reminded me of the wet shirt scene with Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice...

  • John, you were *totally* my Ilene.

  • With all the boxes behind John it makes me nervous that he's taking time to make a video when there are SO many pages to sign!

  • It's probably not the time to say I was just a little disappointed in "Looking for Alaska"... but Katherines was awesome!

  • Also, John's description of his first book (which I have read) could totally also describe the book *I'm* writing...in spite of the fact that they don't reeeeeally have that much in common. The kissing happens on page one in my book, for example.

  • I think I disappointed my Ilene.

  • @emmetgirl :(

  • @rainbowchakra90 It's okay! I just wasn't ready for an Ilene yet. It's also possible I was looking for an Ilene in the wrong line of work, since I was trying to be a playwright then, and now I'm starting to think that I make more sense as a novelist. A playwright who lives on my street says that's because writing plays is for old people. So maybe I'll still do it later? (He's not that old.)

  • Unless you're in a successful Time Lord rock Band..

  • @jjscot7 i wish charlieissocoollike had said that on this video

  • come on eileen!..

  • Good thing I am staying in graduate school forever. I do have an Ilene, though, and it's everyone in the musicology department at FSU. These people make my life possible. Hoping to one day pass it on.

  • Oh no! We broke John's signing hand! :( I hope there is no permanent damage.

  • no need to be afraid, NO ONE has it figured it out! The best advice someone gave me,get a job,and work till you figure out what you want to do with your life, and you'll earn some money, and you'll discover what you like/don't like- then go after that-Like John Lennon said,"Life is what happens to you, while you're busy making other plans"...good luck!

  • this is me. real life started like 2 months ago, and so far paralysing fear has been the emotion that's taken, say, 99% of the time

  • I still have this year and next year with a potential fifth year before I enter the adult world. . .still scares me. D:

  • I actually graduate from occupational therapy school soon. I'm definitely trying to meet some healthcare Ilenes. Hopefully one of those took care of your wrist for you. Thanks for the insight!

  • Comment removed

  • he put a new meaning into the word Ilean =D

  • Is the word doobidoo or dublidoo or what? lol

  • @ELBlove7 Doobleydoo? (:

  • I wanna read Ransom's book so badly, but I can't get it from the library, I'm low on cash and my local book store recently suffered flooding. :( *sigh* I simply have to wait.
