Yup. Thanks to the links from Hulldanfan & a very kind reply from Wim Heins, Wim confirms that the awesome guitar being played here was custom built by him to Jan's spec. If Jan is (probably) one of the best guitarists ever (in my opinion, the best ever), then Wim is (luthier wise) in the same dimension - totally awesome.

Sometimes I just think that Jan's Les Paul tone these days gets very harsh, especially on the Custom - The Personal is a little better. Rather than hit the stick straight onto the drum skin (head), the drummer half clips the rim (the bit that holds the head in place) at the same time as the skin. Technically, it's called a Rimshot. Hear it a 09:00on as well. Gives it that extra colour and "thwack". Comes from jazz mainly.

I'm pretty sure this the 'Catalyst Firenze' that was a remodelled version of the signature 'Framus JanAkkerman'. There is a picture of a Black one in the 'Guitars and Amps' section of Jans Website. The original Framus can be found on the site 'framusakkerman dot_net'

Jan Akkerman and Zal Cleminson (The Sensational Alex Harvey Band) are two of those rare gems virtually unknown to American audiences. Jan is truly a master if the instrument.

I've often noticed over the years how Jan's picks have got thicker and thicker. This clip is 2005 and I'm convinced thatthey are even thicker now. Anyone got any info ?

Thanks Hulldanfan. I love the tone Jan gets from the Les Paul. The only one to compare (although very different styles) was Paul Kossoff. My favourite Jan Akkerman piece is the last 5 minutes of "Lammy" from "Tabernakel". Any comments ?
You have great taste and yes I loved Kossoff, the most understated player Ive ever heard. He just let the phrasing and the tone do the work. I am a huge Akkerman fan but I think his LP tone seems to be a little harsher these days than I remember from years gone by. Watch the Streetwalker clip from Wilhemina Cafe. I loved his tone on the Langcaster guitars and his L5 is amazing. Just an all-round wonderful player
For some years now, Jan has alternated primarily between the Black LP and his reconstructed LP Personal. But before that he used Catalyst, SG's and Framus guitars a lot as well.
@Incomer2005 don't put yourself down I am sure happiness has nothing to do with being Jan but yourself besides make no mistake his musicians do also make it sound the way he does.....................
Onnavolgbaar ... zo'n gitarist is geen tweede van of het nu Jazz, Bleus, Rock, Modern of Klassiek is hij beheerst alles tot in perfectie. Altijd experimenteel bij zijn optredens en laat dan (soms) wel eens een steekje vallen. Bezorgt vele mensen veel luisterplezier ... Ik wacht nog altijd op een reünie met Kaz Lux en dat ze samen weer een dijk van een CD maken zoals Eli en Transperantal

jan is the best -a bit of an exentric-but rightly so -as he is one of our dutch I cons -and votes the best guitarists in the worl -a it way back , but he realy is one of the best inovative guitarists of our time !-all you have to do is listen to his playing -do a bit of reserch as to his music -you will be always surprised at what he comes up with !

Hi Schemer, Hmmm niet op komen dagen is idd niet bepaald netjes en je laat je "volgelingen" dan lekker in de kou staan. Ik heb hem veel zien spelen op grotere en op de kleinere podiums. Vooral in de kleine zaaltjes ervaar ik hem als toegankelijke vent die ook wel in is voor een lul praatje enz. en met wie je zelfs backstage los kan gaan en samen kan spelen. Tis akkerman sowieso =) Niemand speelt zo als hij.
Maar met je bewering dat hij niet arrogant is ben ik het niet helemaal eens. Akkerman heeft de reputatie dat als hij gewoon geen zin heeft om op te treden hij gewoon niet op komt dagen. Is verscheidene keren voorgekomen.

Onnavolgbaar ... zo'n gitarist is geen tweede van of het nu Jazz, Bleus, Rock, Modern of Klassiek is hij beheerst alles tot in perfectie. Altijd experimenteel bij zijn optredens en laat dan (soms) wel eens een steekje vallen. Bezorgt vele mensen veel luisterplezier ... Ik wacht nog altijd op een reünie met Kaz Lux en dat ze samen weer een dijk van een CD maken zoals Eli en Transperantal
Ik blijf hopen op de beste Gitarist en Zanger van de Eeuw hun nieuwe CD

jan is the best -a bit of an exentric-but rightly so -as he is one of our dutch I cons -and votes the best guitarists in the worl -a it way back , but he realy is one of the best inovative guitarists of our time !-all you have to do is listen to his playing -do a bit of reserch as to his music -you will be always surprised at what he comes up with !

Ik veronderstel dat er een probleem is van de vertaling: Ik heb niet gesproken over de techniek van het plectrum op Jan Akkerman. Jan is een van mijn favoriete gitaristen ooit sinds ik geluisterd naar Focus.

Hi Schemer, Hmmm niet op komen dagen is idd niet bepaald netjes en je laat je "volgelingen" dan lekker in de kou staan. Ik heb hem veel zien spelen op grotere en op de kleinere podiums. Vooral in de kleine zaaltjes ervaar ik hem als toegankelijke vent die ook wel in is voor een lul praatje enz. en met wie je zelfs backstage los kan gaan en samen kan spelen. Ben niet verliefd op hem ofzo maar idd Nederlands trots RESPECT :-) !

Timo Ik denk dat het ook stiekem Jan Akkerman helemaal niet was... Het was een fake want je kon ook zijn gezicht niet zien.... ;-) Ondertussen staat Jan nog steeds op behoorlijk wat podia en is hij een veel gevraagd man die gewoon doet wat hij leuk vindt. Zonder arrogant te beweren dat hij de beste is ofzo... En jij verdien jij ook een goede boterham met wat je echt leuk vindt ? Greetz..

Tis akkerman sowieso =) Niemand speelt zo als hij.
Maar met je bewering dat hij niet arrogant is ben ik het niet helemaal eens. Akkerman heeft de reputatie dat als hij gewoon geen zin heeft om op te treden hij gewoon niet op komt dagen. Is verscheidene keren voorgekomen.
Maar hij blijft nederlands trots =)

That makes 2 of us. Kennissen van mij hebben ooit de eer gehad met hem te spelen en te praten, maar hij vind zichzelf het grootste talent wat ooit heeft geleefd. En als hij geen zin heeft dan komt hij idd niet. Geen respect voor zijn publiek. Maar toch, een groot talent en een trots van Nederland, maar doe mij toch maar Eddie van Halen.
ps. Zeker is dit Jan!
