I love this song, and this is one of the best versions i ever heard of it, or even ofcourse, it is so different from the interpretions i knew. Its kind of desperade and hopeless but although like he tryes to prove himselv that hes not caring about all.
This guy is perfect! His performance is dripping with sardonic irony, with defensive flippancy that puts a brave face on the thinly masked bitterness he's feeling. His combination of legit singing technique and belt is most unusual, and the only performer I've seen who has shown that he actually has technique. Bravo, Jon Peterson!! I wish we could see him do the whole song.
i'm using this song to audition for little shop of horrors. this is by far one of my favorite reditions of this song. so much emotion *the crowd politely titters*
I agree-it's as if he's bemoaning the loss of Germany to the Nazis, despite his earlier attempts to warn the world through satire. Because he realizes that he's a direct victim, it's almost like a personal eulogy
I saw Jon Peterson in Denver and was absolutely floored by his interpretation - so much so that the Alan Cummings recording is quite a disappointment.
I played the Emcee a few years ago in something like this. I am now in my final year of one of three music theatre courses in Australia. The song isn't supposed to be angry. This song is designed to break down and show the raw sorrow of the character, and show whats behind the make-up and onstage antics of the EmCee.
ohhhhhh.....well you played the Emcee once, AND you have taken 3 music theatre courses in Australia...we should all listen to you. Your like a real expert, wow.
I must say I relly like this. Been looking at some other "I dont care much" Vids on youtube and I liked this the most. I like it since he roars a bit in it. I think it shows the confliction in this song. Maybe he does care but he can't let anyone else know.. That's what I think when I hear this. It's a very good song. =)
Hmm..I didn't exactly agree with the way he interpreted the song. He made it more hostile than tragic, but I suppose to each his own.
What I really don't agree with is all the hater comments on this video. Just because he chose to do it a different way, doesn't mean it's bad. Deal with it.
I absolutely hate the way he sung this song. This song can mean so much, and this clown destroyed it. The singing is poor, the emotions are badly faked, and the whole thing together makes me cringe. Boo!
To be fair, the tempo is really really fast. I don't know what happened, but that's an orchestra problem, not his. The singing is definately not poor, if you ever trained vocally, you would know that his belt was well done. The emotions aren't faked, they're just different. Basically what you said about yourself in that comment is that you can't understand change, and you don't think that actors should try to take on a new persona in characters they play. I didn't love this, either. But chill.K?
well that's a bit harsh but agreed somewhat...some break their backs building a house others can recognize as such, others go further and readily imagine the contents inside each room. but it's ok, you can do "cheap" art and still live fulfilled life & give something to ppl who pay you for it LOL
Jon is my favorite Emcee, we were blessed to have him in our production last year. Not only a fantastic performer but an absolute sweetheart. His "I Don't Care Much" remains one of my favorite renditions.
Also could you put up Wilkommen, you got me whanting to see more. I got to see this from the backstage when I was helping out with the prps. In our producson of this, and I got chills when the guy sang this.
Another John! He's my 2nd favorite emcee. Only becucse the guy who I had a crush on was the emcee in our high shcool producson of Cabaret. so he's obvisly my favorite emcee. What are the odds that both their names are John!
Wow, interesting.... have you a full recording of the show? (out of curiosity)

i don't interpret his performance as angry, but rather as desperate.
The emcee is breaking down, and this is the only way he knows how to show it and express it.

I love this song, I have the original concept album of Cabaret where it's perfomed by Ebb and Kander, it's so haunting.

where is the emotion??? where is the feeling??

Well, it's not like he cares all that much

that is why Alan Cumming is a great actor earning millions and this clown is on youtube.
sing as loud as you can and with as much misplaced emotion as you can muster and you'll please some of the people. not me. 3/10.

There's a second part to this song,
"So if you kiss me, if we touch, warning's fair, I don't care... very much"
It's after the dialogue. The music plays under the dialogue and then it grows and Emcee comes back in.
You don't by any chance have it do you? Let me know. Thanks.
casemagic 3 years ago
that's in the 1987 revival-the 1998 revival expanded the song and didn't have it continue over the dialogue
I wish it did though
