To the pony tailed poser: Nobody ever handled and cued a record on a turntable like you do. I worked in radio as a teenager when typically 3 turntables. You don't know how to cue a record.
snarfdude: No such thing as being "too delicate." Being gentle with things is how you make them last for years. If everyone in a station was gentle on equipment like it was their own, repair and replacement costs would be reduced greatly. Your backspin when Qing a record DOES matter if you don't want "wow" when you start it. Agreed on the decent pressings, but sometimes, polystyrene is all you have to work with if that's what the record company sent.
The guy is being too delicate with using the actual tone arm lift. QRK Russco or Mccurdy (for us here in canada) never had a tone arm lift. you lift the head shell and plunk it down. I use the edge of the TT platter to backcue. A TT like this should get you up to speed with a 1/4 turn, but 1/4 1/2 doesn't really matter.
decent pressings of vinyl also matter. don't backcue a polystrene 45. can we say "cueburn"?
Try carting a record dubbing a record to a cart. there's a lost art!
Now, if you just had Russco or QRK professional turntables, the folks at home would really get to see how it used to be done before digital soundfiles. Oh, if you want to back the record up, just hit the reverse button.
