Only through creation of new companies that are privately owned can there be true competition. But the start up costs and red tape a new insurance company would have to go through in order to get started are so mountainous only the largest corporations can afford to start such a business.

Actually lets face it the restrictions on medical insurance that has been passed over the past 30 years is the main reason there is no real competition in the medical insurance. Only through creation of new companies that are privately owned can there be true competition. But the start up costs and red tape a new insurance company would have to go through in order to get started are so mountainous only the largest corporations can afford to start such a business.

The things that restrict insurance companies from selling insurance accross state lines are called laws, and the only thing that could fix that is a Federal law allowing it. In some States there are laws that have established single companys as the only company people can buy medical insurance from.

WE don't have healthcare. We have disease management. That's is where the money is for them. This justifies raising premiums, keeping beds in hospitals full and inreasing the need for medications. If we actually took care of our health all this would go away with all their profits. The republicans say that government competition would hurt the insurance industry and that government wouldn't manage it well. What we have now isn't serving us well and I have no sympathy for insurance companies.

I think as long as there's money and financial interests in the end it won't matter too much. Democracy still has a better track record of providing equality for its citizens than other forms of government but those who hold the money hold the real power in almost any society in any age.
