i like macross frontier its cool a lot :-) it has nice music, i like the charaters and my favorite Alto and also i like the veritechs there cool with all diffrent desights :-).
can anyone tell me why they would use fighters that are designed like atmospheric planes (e.g. wings to utilize uplifting air currents and even thrusters that look like jet turbines rather than rocket engines) in outer space instead of ones that are designed for that environment?
@Sarkral Well in the original Macross they were designed for use both on Earth and in space so they needed to be able to function in both equally well, and I assume they kept the design for several reasons, first as a homage (the veritech is one of the biggest and most recognized symbols of the series), beacuse the design proved itself over years of war, and because shooting down aliens in space with jets is badass. :p
@junsengjs That is technically incorrect since only the VF-1 Valkyrie was a Valkyrie so it would not be correct to call all of them that. It would be like calling all fighter jets a Mustang after the P-51 Mustang. I should have said Variable Fighter.
@sortedevaras the name "Valkyrie" is used to refer to any variable fighter in the macross franchise, example: Alto called Brera's VF-27 a valkyrie the first time he fought with him.

What did I just watch? All I saw was crazy flashy explosions in an incoherent plot. I can tell that this is targeting kids and teens. Since when did music have magical powers? This is totally not what macross was supposed be. What the hell is up with klanklang and the stupid cutesy creatures? Sadly someone decided, hey lets make an anime with characters that are flying jets that turn into robots and each one be a different color and lets have them fight giant insects and then lets have cutesy aliens and have a 50 foot woman that shrinks when she is a little girl. And lets target kids and teens with flashy colors. awe.. what the fuck lets just call it macross. :(

Singing girlfriends yes, but the music never had magical powers. The only reason music was used in battle in the original macross was because the zentreadi knew nothing of culture and it confused them. not magic. they took the music concept and fucked it up. The original macross was far more believable than this kiddy crap.

@yepdrinker I started watching Macross Frontier a few weeks ago and finally got around to finishing it It’s unfortunate because after watching Super Dimensional Fortress Macross a few months ago (which I enjoyed), I was looking forward to Macross Frontier at first . as they set up the premise and introduced the characters but there wasn’t any real meat to the story. As the series went on, the fluff only became more obvious and more unbearable.

It made more sense in the original Macross against the Zentradi, but the Vajra again don’t seem to be right type of enemy for this to work on. Just feels a bit tacked in in order to keep the musical trait of the series. There were also numerous plot holes and shortcuts in the storytelling. What was with the characters going all tsuntsun between emo/depressed and suddenly determined to fight and “protect” (Yes, the oh-so-original “I fight to protect” reasoning).
@yepdrinker The fact that the truth behind Ranka, Vajra, Brera, etc was really only revealed in the last 3-4 episodes seems to indicate that the writers really didn’t have any good plan for the entirety of the show and just decided to string the series all the way along with very little real substance. Really, at least half of the episodes could have been cut and it could have ended the same way. Overall, I found Macross Frontier quite disappointing.

I have made a lot of comparisons to the original series but since Macross Frontier seems to want to copy it so much it only made sense to do so. Some of the characters seemed to be almost carbon copied from characters in the first Macross.

@warhawk009 well maybe if you took the time to watch and thoroughly understand the series you'd see that ranka and sheryl have a v type infection which allows them to interfere with the vajra communication frequency every time they sing that's why ranka was used as a weapon once and sheryl too. now alto hears sheryl's voice because of the earring she gave him which the material it is made of is supposed to enhance long range space communications as explained by luca once.
The Terrans have started fighting the Zerg with giant robots (Thor) AND transforming fighter mechs (Viking) with probably more mecha to come in coming expansions. Also as Nekito16 said, their ability to affect the aliens is later explained with the infection. So sir, your comment is now invalid.

This is only around 40 years from the original (I have not yet come around to watching the original though) but technology in Macross advances pretty fast. The Destroid was probably used because it still proved effective and was probably updated with modern technology much like how the older VF-17 Nightmare was updated into the VF-17 Nightmare+.
A real modern day example of this is the F-15 Eagle, first deployed in 1976. Despite being over 30 years old it is still a active unit.

There's a lot of theories that one could apply to the outburst of technology advance, one of which is called "the technological singularity" which could be supported by the fact that many of the people of Galaxy shown in the show are cyborgs. Even so 90% of Earth's population is dead, humans have expanded all over the galaxy and I'm sure they re-produce quite quick. The technology of the Macross timeline has always been superior to reality's timeline.
@Omegamegamanzx understandable and the reason for the advance in technology was the adaption of alien technology into modern human technology. but with in only 40 years and humans being aboard only 1 ship I really doubt that that would be enough time for 50,000 people to all of a sudden grow and colonize planets and build massive space stations. where would they get the man power to construct such colonies? and resources?
@warhawk009 There are often "baby boom" after wars, and they got the zentraedi to help repopulate and build, resources can be obtained by sending ships to asteroids or recycling damaged ones.
I could literally shed tears of joy at how breathtaking this entire episode is. I truly felt Macross was finally back in the biggest way possible when I watched it.

danteaddai it's not a macross. It's a VF a.k.a. Variable Fighter. Keep in mind danteaddai it's mainly the pilot's skill and his ability in a dogfight. True a gundam has a ton of firepower, technology and yes..armor. But what's the point of not hitting your target? And what's is the point of dogfighting with all of that armor & weapons in place. I may be wrong but VF is best at a dogfight in my opinion. I do like gundam too but Macross ftw. But gundam SD was a disgrace.

I think the battle scene in this macross frontier is far better than 00 but maybe they are two different things (since this one is like a complete 3D)
Also, do not forget to mention how Macross VF are well armed. Valkyries or variable fighters can carries reaction weapons (nuclear weapons based on super dimension fusion principle) and the new valkyries like the VF-25 and the VF-27 have quantum beam, dimension eater gun pod and even dimension eater missiles. Even the strongest mobile suit could not survive such odds.
I Really love Giant Mechas, Gundam Code Geass and Macross Series, if they continued the franchise on MOSPEADA and Dragonar, Im sure it will also be hit

Hum, depending on what you mean, you may be wrong. Macross original series (1982) is often said to be the first mecha anime series to have believable mecha animations for their transformations (Valkyrie/Battroïd/Gerwalk mode) unlike '70s mecha anime.
Aside from that, you're right : Shijo Kawamori is a huge Gundam fan. It makes this all "Gundam VS Macross fans" war even more pointless.
Macross and Gundam does have similarities... Afterall... Both are the grandfather and granmother of most mecha's aside from Voltes V and Daimos and Mazinger and other mecha animes...
Yeah... like Michael was a sniper that died like the pilot of Gundam Dynames in Gundam 00. Tieria Erde, the braniac is similiar to that midget pilot. Of course, Alto and Setsuna are related cause they are main characters.

Quite simply, this was one of the greatest episodes I've seen in ANY anime. The action is absolutely breathtaking, and the way it flows so well with the music is just amazing.
The macross frontier fighting scenes are sooo awesome.. Combining awesome CG fighting scenes with awesome japanese music.. It's totally.. Legend, wait for it............ DARY :D
I would Recommend the 1984 Macross Movie, Macross: Do You Remember Love. The animation quality is far better than the original series in 1982 and the movie is an alternate course for the story compared to the original series. I wish they would redo the original Macross with high quality animation. A Next Gen Macross game that includes the VF-1J would be nice too :'( ...must stop typing.....macross addiction.....showing.......

@yepdrinker I am a little upset. I am upset that my favorite series went to fuck. The way macross ended there should not have been any sequels at all. And yeah I might be picking on Frontier because its the latest addition to fuck but it also fucked up the themes of macross. Yes macross has had music and love triangles. and yes it had political undertones later in the series when humans were becoming more familiar with the zentradi.

I admit I don't fancy the triangle in Frontier, but i do like some of the character focus like Shery and Michail. For me Macross is the whole package, and sometime there parts of the package that bit disappointing. Despite that I still love the universe, I like aspect like the ships, battles, and designs. There are always other aspect to enjoy.

@yepdrinker but instead of expanding on the original story they decided to take a cluster fuck of ideas and post them all on a white board and shoot them with a shotgun to create a completely nonsensical plot. macross frontier could have a different title and it would make more sense. the singing in macross had way more of a point (which i liked) and it was far more interesting than the half ass explanation of why someone sings to mindless drones in order to use music as a weapon to keep themes.

It made more sense in the original Macross against the Zentradi, but the Vajra again don’t seem to be right type of enemy for this to work on. Just feels a bit tacked in in order to keep the musical trait of the series. There were also numerous plot holes and shortcuts in the storytelling. What was with the characters going all tsuntsun between emo/depressed and suddenly determined to fight and “protect” (Yes, the oh-so-original “I fight to protect” reasoning).

@yepdrinker The fact that the truth behind Ranka, Vajra, Brera, etc was really only revealed in the last 3-4 episodes seems to indicate that the writers really didn’t have any good plan for the entirety of the show and just decided to string the series all the way along with very little real substance. Really, at least half of the episodes could have been cut and it could have ended the same way. Overall, I found Macross Frontier quite disappointing.

I have made a lot of comparisons to the original series but since Macross Frontier seems to want to copy it so much it only made sense to do so. Some of the characters seemed to be almost carbon copied from characters in the first Macross.

@warhawk009 well maybe if you took the time to watch and thoroughly understand the series you'd see that ranka and sheryl have a v type infection which allows them to interfere with the vajra communication frequency every time they sing that's why ranka was used as a weapon once and sheryl too. now alto hears sheryl's voice because of the earring she gave him which the material it is made of is supposed to enhance long range space communications as explained by luca once.

This is only around 40 years from the original (I have not yet come around to watching the original though) but technology in Macross advances pretty fast. The Destroid was probably used because it still proved effective and was probably updated with modern technology much like how the older VF-17 Nightmare was updated into the VF-17 Nightmare+.
A real modern day example of this is the F-15 Eagle, first deployed in 1976. Despite being over 30 years old it is still a active unit.

There's a lot of theories that one could apply to the outburst of technology advance, one of which is called "the technological singularity" which could be supported by the fact that many of the people of Galaxy shown in the show are cyborgs. Even so 90% of Earth's population is dead, humans have expanded all over the galaxy and I'm sure they re-produce quite quick. The technology of the Macross timeline has always been superior to reality's timeline.

danteaddai it's not a macross. It's a VF a.k.a. Variable Fighter. Keep in mind danteaddai it's mainly the pilot's skill and his ability in a dogfight. True a gundam has a ton of firepower, technology and yes..armor. But what's the point of not hitting your target? And what's is the point of dogfighting with all of that armor & weapons in place. I may be wrong but VF is best at a dogfight in my opinion. I do like gundam too but Macross ftw. But gundam SD was a disgrace.

Also, do not forget to mention how Macross VF are well armed. Valkyries or variable fighters can carries reaction weapons (nuclear weapons based on super dimension fusion principle) and the new valkyries like the VF-25 and the VF-27 have quantum beam, dimension eater gun pod and even dimension eater missiles. Even the strongest mobile suit could not survive such odds.

Hum, depending on what you mean, you may be wrong. Macross original series (1982) is often said to be the first mecha anime series to have believable mecha animations for their transformations (Valkyrie/Battroïd/Gerwalk mode) unlike '70s mecha anime.
Aside from that, you're right : Shijo Kawamori is a huge Gundam fan. It makes this all "Gundam VS Macross fans" war even more pointless.

Quite simply, this was one of the greatest episodes I've seen in ANY anime. The action is absolutely breathtaking, and the way it flows so well with the music is just amazing.

I would Recommend the 1984 Macross Movie, Macross: Do You Remember Love. The animation quality is far better than the original series in 1982 and the movie is an alternate course for the story compared to the original series. I wish they would redo the original Macross with high quality animation. A Next Gen Macross game that includes the VF-1J would be nice too :'( ...must stop typing.....macross addiction.....showing.......

Some episodes (the very important ones), like the first and the 27th have really better animation, but quite a lot of episodes are really ugly... :(
