This scene still brings tears to my eyes after all these years - it's that poignant. Such an awesome movie. I remember seeing it in the theater when it first came out. I was 17. It inspired me in so many ways. Thanks so much for sharing!
A delight and yet so sad. It hurts deeply to watch this movie and especially the ending. I will never forget this movie as long as I live and cherish my library copy. And Mr. Rosenman and Roberta Flack make this a living classic. Thanks for posting.
@vacalling youre welcome. It's so cool to get comments of people that remember this film from way back, and have so many memories attached to it. Love it.
Goldie Hawn was offered the part of Claire & turned it down. The kissing scene between Zach & Bart was groundbreaking at the time, the kiss was called "The shot heard around the world." 11 years after this came out the film Philadelphia featured lovers who didn't even kiss. The AIDS epidemic began in 1982, the portrayal of Zach's promiscuous trick would be frowned upon in today's gay society. Kate Jackson was at the height of her beauty in this film. THANK YOU HONEY !
I saw this movie in the movie theater w/ a friend while we were in high school & it had a great impact on me. It is one one my FAVORITE movies & is very special 2 me. Every time I see it, I cry, lol, but I have 2 see it from time 2 time. Truly beautiful & SO touching!
Thanks a lot for uploading this movie! It is so beautiful. Claire really loved Zach, it can be seen in her eyes, that's why she was able to let him go. I hope that more people could be understanding like her.
I'm lucky enough to say that I was in the same situation, and nowadays I'm still very close friend of my ex.
I think her saying "So long Zach" meant that she didn't think they would see one another again. They started new lives with different people. They still have a special love for each other, but she knows things are different and she has to devote herself to her new family and Zach has his own life in NYC. Perhaps they will cross paths, perhaps not. But this was a sad and hard scene to watch. I know what it's like to love someone and not be able to be with them in the way we used to be.
I used to watch Kate in Charlies Angels and think she would look better with long hair when this movie came out I was so happy. She is beautiful. Her "Goodbye Zach..." kills me everytime.
thank you for posting the movie. unfortunatley, the ending was cut off. Even though the ending was filled with credits, it was the song "making love" was an equally important part of the movie. The song summed up the feelings between the two at the end.
@funkysoulguy Youre welcome. I know about the song, thing is Youtube didnt accept the clip when I left the song in it, copyright and such. This was the only way I could post it, unfortunately.
I remember loving this movie when it came out 29 years ago. This is the first time I've seen it since then. Watching it now is a very different experience. Partly, no doubt, because I'm 29 years older, but primarily for another reason almost as inevitable. For its time it was daringly at the edge. Now it's still a good film, but the edge has moved.
Thanks for uploading this and also for giving us the option of 480p.
I took my HS girlfriend to see this in the theater when it came out. I cried all the way home and she coutldn't understand why. That summer I told her I wanted to name our first kid Rupert, but as much as I loved her (and i did and stil do after all these years) I knew I couldn't bare to put her through the pain. By the end of the summer before going off to college I told her my confused feelings. I remember like it was yesterday, 'cept we both just held each other and cried all night long.
Wow, exerytime I see this film it gets more powerful. I would like to see it in theaters today although their acting/performance would never be able to be captured like that again.
The final scene between Ontkean and Jackson in this film makes the final scene between Redford and Streisand in "The Way We Were" look like a laugh riot. It shows the terrible toll that homophobia takes upon the straight as well as the gay. Heart breakingly sad. Oscar worthy indeed.
Duno why but I cried when Zach & Claire met at the funeral. They both seemed hapi to see each other. I felt the pain when Zach was shocked to find out Claire's boy is Rupert, the name for their dream son. But I felt the pain worst when Claire wishpered "So long Zach.." when they parted. What does she mean by that? I can feel the freindship, the bond they created after being ex-spouses. Anybody who watched the movie, care to share what your opinions may be? Thank u GLBTmov3 for posting the movie.
@menzhi Zack was her life. Her whole world revolved around Zack. They had something very special and unique that they shared between them. It was difficult for Claire to let it (all) go even after they parted ways. Seeing him again at the funeral brought it all back to her and she saw the (old) Zack that she knew and loved. I think her "So Long Zack" was a goodbye to ALL that she remembered of the old Zack. Sort of a method of closure for her. Was heart-wrenching as hell though. Excellent movie.
I agree, but I wouldn't use the word "closure." It seems to me that the end reveals that it is still a fact that she loves him, still. One can hope that she'll now move on; but the dramatic punch comes from the world-weariness of "So long, Zach." And she stands there, and off he goes, as he went before..... It's so sad. Sigh.
@menzhi - I'm 48, I think it was just her final letting go of him as a husband and full acceptance of her new life. Seeing him after a few years allowed her to finally let go. It's a bittersweet thing. It hurts happy and it hurts sad.
The world is a much different place for gay people. Gay men still get married and divorce, but probably less now with younger people. So long...
