  • Love this advert

  • Yessuh Boss!

  • This advert is immortal

  • It's an ad, about juice. Get over it.

  • Woohoo! Catchiest advert tune ever, reminds me of my summer holidays.

  • It's funny because Crows are citrus intolerant

  • @SqueeksoAo Genius comment

  • @SqueeksoAo crows don't have orange beaks.

  • @8lu3m00n007 Tell that to the people who drew the fucking things, not me!

  • Ha ha! Totally makes me think Fritz The Cat. Too funny. Definately implicating blacks although I would not say racist. Seems more funny stereotyping than derogatory.

  • Dougi dougi dougi

  • kia ora is moari for hello

  • A lot of cartoons shown on UK TV in the 1980's were made in the US between the 40's and the 60's, and they had this kind of imagery in them (think of the house keeper in Tom & Jerry). If I remember correctly there was a fad for this kind of retro americana around this time too, I'm pretty sure this ad was made in the wake of that. Doesn't make it acceptable by todays standards, but sometimes a bit of contex helps.

  • Good ad - the drink tasted shit though...all those bits at the bottom ! Cheap and nasty tartrazine yuk !

  • yeah and the R Whites advert is racist cuz it portrays all white people as honkey ass elvis wannabes. its just sooo stereotypical. and look at the name: R *WHITES*. its like 'our whites' ya get me? shocking.

  • @stephizzal evil! this advert is so ok, theres nothign wrong with it at all! They should put the black kid in a hoodie, and make him have bigger lips, with a bucket of fried chicken! And they should have him yell LAWD MASSER! LAWD! And have a big nosed Jew hand him a gold chain!

And if a kid sees it, and grows up with it, and likes it and is used to it, he can argue there's nothing wrong with it, just an advert, just like you do!

  • @kdreamland well let me be the first to say that is just TERRIFIC. have you ever thought about going into advertising?

  • The first Crow sounds like Chunky Kong.

  • compleate idiots if you think this is Racist... go back to your PC lobby

  • What? Black people aren't allowed to sing anymore??! Somebody better tell Beyonce!

  • who gives a shit!!

  • "Too orangey for crows"

    Precursor to the Trix rabbit?

    "I'll be your dog"

    The Stooges?

Anyways this is stereotypical but not hateful, so I'm not sure whether you can call it "racist".

  • Here's an idea, if everybody just admitted they are racist there wouldn't need to be an argument about it ! Simple eh ! Black, Whites, Yellows, Browns and all

I only came on here to watch an advert for orange juice and feel like I should be calling the F'kin UN peace keeping force.

  • @Stozzler1 Most real and funny comment I've seen for a while

  • @Stozzler1 This is one of the best adverts ever. The tune is quite brilliant. Racist????? What a load of bollocks. There is nothin racist about it. Every comment about this advert is about it being racist!!?? I'd rather discuss why the 2nd Kioara advert what followed this one isnt on youtube. That was brilliant too. I wish I could find it. The tune was even better than this!

  • How can anyone say this is racist!!! As other comments have pointed out, this was made in a time when racism wasn't such a pc thing. Not saying that that was right, but fact. I have lovely childhood memories of many things associated with 'black' culture, but I'm not allowed to make reference to them anymore cos it's considered racist. Things have got silly regarding racism and to be honest, the most racist people I know are people who say 'you're just saying that cos I'm black' reversed racism!

  • @Mozgor so basically stuff that is racist when u were younger wasnt seen as racist then cos every1 used to be racist now ppl care about racism their too pc? this ad brings back childhood memories n but looking at it in context of history...yea it was racist lol...it is what it is...im still gonna buy kiora..but u have to know what the ad is referencing

  • IT'S AN ADVERT. All i get from this is memories of a time when i did not know what racism was.

  • Ahhh, so that's where the saying 'Dawg' came from.

  • Yay! now i've seen that, the lights go up and the lady with the ice creams goes to the front. i'll have a tub of Walls Blue Ribbon...

    : )

  • I remember this ad growing up *sighs* the good old days when white Christians weren't the most discriminated against people in the world. If a tea advert involved an English man in a bowler hat with a china cup people wouldn't scream racism would they?

    You know I'm right.

  • @the69snark lol @ the idea majorities holding more political power then any other groups are persecuted.

  • I'm sorry, but I think you lot need to grow up. It's a cool ad which is innocent. I used to school in a really multi ethnic part of Manchester and we all loved it.

  • This advert was only racist when weused to sing it to the black kids in the school playground.

  • Comment removed

  • @BanjoBoi123 This is not an American product and thoses foul stereotypes you mention had little resonance in England, There were, alas, others but nothing so vile as the US produced. You comment reeks of American self absorbed arrogance, vis. How could another country ever have a different sense of race, then your good selves?

    Now thats racism

  • Anyone who doesn't find this racist obviously doesn't know about early cartoons and how they modeled African Americans.

Just as a hint: They're ALL in this video.

  • Not rasist unless Black crows are as well. I would think it more racist that every movie has to have a token black person in it to keep people happy, at least if it was depicting blacks it was in context rather than having one in for no reason. PC has gone mad! I saw a version of Oliver twist with a Black Nancy, no issue with black people but clearly not keeping with the original story. PC gone mad!

  • Very memorable ad!! Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Comment removed

  • so racist it shows only black people as traps meaning black people r slaves to white

  • Funny...........all I can see on this advert are cartoon crows....not black people!

  • wow, aint seen this in aaaaages. i was born in 1983 and i clearly remember this.

  • I used to think the "Dog" was Felix the Cat as a kid!

  • I used to wonder what KIA ORA meant when I was little, now living in the land where the sheep get nervous/New Zealand I know only fully well it's meaning.

Different spelling, but it's said the same way in Maori...Hello!!!

    Great advert.

  • I don't think any less of black people after watching this. If it was designed to instil hatred, then it has failed.

  • All you morons go and watch "fritz the cat" and tell me that crows aren't a racist stereotype for blacks.

  • @RaptorFag he is right, i have seen some cartoons in my life that has a crow as one of the storyline characters although its been a long time so i only know one, did anybody see the secret of nimh? one of the main characters was a crow. i will promise you he is not racist.

  • its too orangey for crows its just for me and my dog!i remember this!one frm my childhood!

  • Was the Milkybar ad campaign OK by you?

  • Wow, you are one tedious dipshit with fuck all to say...

  • ....wtf just happened!?

  • once knew a lass with a gigantic twat !!! never touched the sides !!

  • @mrralvintwerp And you are also a gigantic twat.

I cant believe you think people could be impressed by that comment..ewwww!

  • When I was very young, I remember the little black boy on the packaging, but he's since been removed

  • its just an ad. how is it racist. It takes its name from "kia ora", a Māori language greeting which has entered New Zealand English. It means literally "be well/healthy" and is used for both "hello" and "goodbye". The name was first used for a lemon squash by Arthur Gasquoine of Sydney, Australia who founded an ice and soft-drink business in 1896. First created in Australia in 1903, 'Kia-Ora' was launched in Great Britain in 1917.

  • as per everything on you tube, someone has found racism in a fkin orange juice add. damn those white bastards making a happy cartoon to sell juice!!! if you look closely youll see hitler in the background and a klan meeting behind the basketball guy.

  • @spaceraida fo real homie? i cant see it =$ this is a trip!!!

  • @spaceraida LOL

  • Wonder if these ads got shown in New Zealand

  • anyone who thinks this is a racist advert is clearly themselves a racist, remember its your opinion!

  • calm down dear its only a commercial

  • if this is racist, then it fails as advertising, because no one in England, a mainly white anglo saxon country, would by the product.

but we loved it! so it can't be racist!

the crows reference a Disney cartoon (Dumbo)

the only "black" character is the little boy, and he's the one who has the drink, so is the winner/hero in the ad. hardly racism methinks...

  • @DavetheChimp Did you miss the point of the crows in Dumbo? Seriously? They were black racist caricatures. Also, the only real black character in it is a fucking TARBABY figure. Can't get much more racist than that.

  • NO WAY CAN THIS BE CONSIDERED RACIST THERE IS NO OBVIOUS HUMILIATION OR STEREO TYPING THAT I CAN SEE, I WISH PEOPLE WOULD JUMP OFF THEIR HIGH HORSES AND CHILL....

  • I have no idea how anyone could see this as not racist

  • @Homepie

    By not being a dick

  • great advert, anyone reading further into it is paranoid quite frankly!

  • well past its sell by date. did anyone actually drink this shit. libbys ad pisses on this.

  • Racism? Ahaaa grow up! Its an animation, calm down.

  • Was Richard Williams involved in animating this?

  • @3ddrew I thought it might be Richard Williams, but it's Oscar Grillo at Klacto Animations. I love it!

  • Comment removed

  • I understand someone feeling uncomfortable with the outdated stereotypes, the black "mammy", the basketballer etc, but why have all black caricatures become taboo? Someone can be mocked for having pale skin or a big nose, yet any mocking of any features that visually define a race is racist

  • 80's adverts take me back!!!

  • Fuck the anti-racists!

  • DUDE this commercial is PIMP! I love 80's weird meth-enduced cartoon style of drawing and THIS is clearly went through a few hundred grams-worth to produce!!

  • You most certainly cannot do that on television...anymore.

I DID NOT INTEND THAT AS A RACIST COMMENT. I was just stating that, well, this (a cartoony caricature of a black person) may have been acceptable on British TV a quarter-century ago, but not today. It's still a good tune though.

  • So this little world, to which we've been granted a momentary glimpse, heavily features black racial stereotypes, but as has already been pointed out in this discussion, aren't they, generally speaking, positive racial stereotypes? What's so wrong with having the physical dexterity and good taste necessary to pull off the cool dress sense, dance moves, and sporting prowess demonstrated here?

  • I love the way the sun element subtly shifts context and transmogrifies, in order to drive the action through most of the animation, almost to the end.

  • Wow, what a fantastic commercial This piece of animation is even more impressive than I remember it being.

  • Wow the comments on this video seem to be fuelled by political correctness gone mad! Classic, fantastic advert and in no way racist for goodness' sake! In the 25ish years that I've known this advert, It never even entered my head that it could be classed as racist!!

  • @dedboy2000 'political correctness gone mad' implies that there is some other level of political correctness that is more acceptable - where is the threshold of acceptability for you?

  • It exploits reductive archetypical images of afro-caribbean culture to promote orange juice to a white, lately imperial, audience in Britain. These images have a history -- and in the 1980s that was a quite recent history -- in the justification of the racist suppression of black populations under the hand of white patrician culture. So whilst *the advert* isn't racist itself, its images originate from a racist tradition of representation which was very much alive in the 1980s.

  • @noglet76 But are they negative portrayals of suppression? We have a lot of pretty positive portrayals there, who are happy to engage in a spot of role play with a young child. In fact the majority of the portrayals refer to coolness, ska, motherhood, zoot suits etc which cannot be construed as negative elements of black culture.

What do you see that is an instrument of the oppressive patriarchal regime?

  • @koncorde Po-faced political correctness says: gangster, sportsman, musician, manual laborer. All portratyed with charming exuberance, sure. But I want to stress the history of these images, and their context in the 80s. Representations of negritude have changed in the last 20 / 30 years, and along with them our reading of such images. This ad might look affirmatory now, but it uses the historic image-repertoire of racist colonialism too comfortably for me. But then, I'm a gigantic twat.

  • @noglet76 I suspect that it (along with the Crows in Dumbo) would be the first in the firing line of every PC assault, but the important thing is to remember that much of what is considered un-PC nobody actually cares about, apart from the few uppity Mary Whitehouse types.

Um Bongo for me is more worrying for its total colonial faux African speak.

  • Bit... racist? a bit?

  • @noglet76

Only if that racism is already in the head of the person viewing it. To everyone else its a cartoon with a catchy tune advertising a drink. How is is racist? Who does it victimise and how are they hurt?

  • Someone made this while thinking "This is a great idea". That blows my mind

  • i couldnt give two shits if its rasict, its a cool advert

  • I love this advert! My little nephew used to love it as well, not little anymore he's 28 and a father!

  • how is it racist? don't be soft.

  • THIS IS RACIST SHIT! Fucking negro parodies!

  • leaving the issue of race aside, this advert brings back a lot of nice childhood memories for me.

And I like the tune from the advert, literally dancing/wriggling in my chair to it ^^

  • @WildWelshWitch: Exactly! Here, you are one of the few people to make a valid point.

Very nostalgic, this advert! I'll be your Dog!

  • Whatever you think about the politics, you've got to love the backing music.

  • haha i remember drinking this straight from the bottle without any water, i loved it!

  • this sin't racism, it's stereotyping, yes, but I think it is very respectable and may even be celebrating the culture it is showing.

  • the crows are pretending to be people to try and get the kid to give them some kia-ora

they look silly because they're crows, not people.

  • Am I wrong in saying that it's actually CROWS in this advert? All the talk of racism would have blown over my 12 year old head in 1984 - and most kids heads even today. Sadly we adults read more into it. Kids wouldn't give a toss - they'd say we were idiots and quite rightly. BTW Kiora was really crap!

  • The (cough!) racism is all just politically correct BS. What really gets me, is the NAME. "Kia Ora" is "hello" in Maori! Orange juice? Gimme some ORANGINA!

  • I'm sorry but the people finding this racist need to wake up! Sooo .. your going to call adverts with white people in racist,, then don't call adverts with black people racist.SIMPLE AS!

  • @Letti126

Like the Homepride bloke - he even wears a bowler hat!!! Stereotype or what?

If people complain about black stereotypes but not him then THEY'RE racist.

  • I loved KIA ORA but it did seem to be a bit of a laxative, maybe I should have stopped after 10 cartons.

  • it tasted of plastic but that is not a racist comment

  • @oscarelgy I can't believe you said that. That's plasticist inferring that a drink that is likened to plastic is somehow bad.

  • a literal parade of racism

  • Oh wow, there is a lot of stating the obvious going on here!

    Good old youtube.

How about we all get over the fact that there might be some racism in this video, and get on with our lives?

If you are genuinely offended by this cartoon then you're probably not mentally stable and shouldn't be using the internet in the first place. I have students who wouldn't act the way you're all acting.

  • So... A Black Kid gets his dog to pour him an orange soft drink which then the sun rings out a cloud to put into his drink which then a bird that walks upright comes in and pretends to be his dog which then after another bird comes and after that another bird plays basket ball with the sun which is followed by a fat lady bird who gets the sun on her head and it turns into walking laundry who is followed by another bird who changes into a bathing suit followed by a jazz band of birds.

    ... WTF?

  • lol its racist because of the black stereotypical parade going on. notice the basketball player and the jazz group?

  • and ??? how is that racist..ok it might be stereotyping but its not racist , so if a cartoon of a guy in a kilt comes on is that racist of scottish people ??

  • I may be wrong but I think I used to know the guy who did this. His name was richard dickson i think and it made him. Drove en e-type jag.

  • This isnt offensive but the 'R Whites lemonade' add is definitely pushing it a bit...get it?, R Whites? I mean, are whites what? have a look at the 'related videos' section.Could be a veiled insult?

  • love this ad so much - ihavbent seen this in 28 years!!!!

  • Choldhood memory indeed.

I can see how some people would call it racist in this sick and twisted post 911 world. And if todays rule applied then, then we would not have had greats like Fawlty Towers, Alf Garnet, or even rainbow! (no "people of colour") Basically the world today is far too worried about upsetting others.

And for those who resist, it is becuase is was a TROPICAL juice drink. so no too many WASPs in the tropics!!

  • Oh yeah, because there are so many basketball playing, jazz singing, jive talking folk in the tropics.

  • wE ALL ADORE WATERMELON

  • al be your dawg!

  • Bring back the Bandicoot

  • racism my arse. great ad! takes me back!

  • lol ingredients = Water Sugar Purple

  • If this ad was racist then surely it would be watermelon flavour and called um bongo bongo land..ahem

anyway great animation, reminds me of the dumbo crows

  • racist are you stupid.would it be racist if they were white ? or chinese ?

this advert was made long before any of this political correctness shite. it was made when you could actually say things without assholes like yourself taking them out of context.a time when freedom of speech actually meant that.

grow up you idiot if anybody is racist its you for bringing it up.

  • @ manchestermassive,

yea it was made when racism was allowed. come on, this is clearly racist. orange drink, jazz and jive talking crows , a fucking mammy crow with a big ass, and basketball? taking what out of context? you are the idiot lol

  • @asum66 this was made in the 80s

  • @ nichlolasdruminor I know. I did you even read what I was responding to?? "this advert was made long before any of this political correctness shite. it was made when you could actually say things without assholes like yourself taking them out of context.a time when freedom of speech actually meant that"

I was responding to this comment by manchestermassive. know the situation before you try to be a smartass.

  • I must be missing the point. Could someone point out exactly what is racist about this advert? Just reminds me of childhood

  • racism my fucking arse. hate fools like you fucking blaming everything on racism. get over it stop analysing everything so much and enjoy your life a bit more.

  • @sekon2008 ,,yeah,,but it is a little bit,,,innocent

  • WTF?

  • I've just realised how trippy this ad is

  • mmm loved this juice, sounds like que hora, means whats the time in spanish XD

  • I remember this advert from the cinema in the UK when I was a boy. Was it just a British ad or was it on in the States and Canada too? Can see it as sterotypical but not offensive in any way.

  • ive got the soundtrack for this advert on 12 inch its called Fedora (ill be your dawg) by Caramba

Found it in a charity shop - havent found another since - The B side is called Ralph and Rolph - and believe me its rather disturbing...

  • Wow. maybe you should learn to spell correctly, English speaking white boy.

  • @StargateCommando thats pretty racist.

  • @JodieeLouisee no its not

  • @StargateCommando RACIST PEASENT

  • How is this not racist?

  • i love it when people mess racism up with stereotypes

they seem to do ANYTHING they possibly can to look like a gigantic twat

  • OMG A BLACK KID IN A CARTOON AD THAT IS SO FUCKING RACIST!!!!!!!! D=<

    No, actually it is not...

  • no it isnt but due to the left wing gits of today it would be classed as racist today

  • why is everyone fighting dose no one know we all adore kia-ora

  • not all of us. its too orangey for crows.

hahaha i just made myself laugh.

    sigh.

  • Love this ad!

  • How is this racist? There's no sign of any racism in this ad in the slightest. It's just being presented to a wider community, and of course there's a clear link here between tropical/citrus fruit and black people. Isn't that a culture thing?

Oh wait, I said "black"... darn, I guess i'm racist now huh? If anything, this is a stereotype, but not racism!

Besides, I'm more concerned with the liverpudlian crows stealing the piano...

  • So racist!

  • Nobody I knew back then said they thought it was racist. Course in those days, people weren't as stupid as they are now

  • True dat... watching these as a kid didn't affect me at all.

Mind you, nowadays every time I see a negro I compulsively attack them with a hammer, but I'm sure that's completely unrelated

  • LOL!

  • ???

  • What the fuck are you lot on about? Silly cunts.

  • People seem to forget that we're all the same u know, and comments sayin this is racist because "only certain groups of people act that way" is bull shit. we aint different. I dunno if u'll get me from that, but thats why it annoys me.

  • wow thats racist to orangey for crows.. ah well

  • Stop being rasict to crows what have they ever done to you.

  • It's NOT racist! It's a lovely jolly summer holiday ad! I just love the kettle drums in that tune - very Boney M (if you think of Brown Girl In The Ring...)

  • I Love This Advert!

  • I actually dont understand why people perceive this as racist. racist against who exactly? anybody wanna enlighten me. I think anyone who sees something like this and thinks it is in anyway racist must have some pretty racist views already. really sad, I loved his advert.

  • your logic makes no sense. it's like saying whoever smelt it , dealt it...

  • Hows that then?

  • i was referring to the bit where you say people who think this ads racist must be racist as well, that argument has never made sense to me, it`s just reverse psycology. What no-one can deny is that there are black stereotypes being portrayed here, whether or not someone finds them offensive is a matter of opinion obviously, that doesen`t make them racist though.

  • What bothers me is the fact that people r often very quick to watch something like this and think about who its portrayin. Maybe its just me, I dunno but all I saw in this cartoon was one kid being followed by a load of crows doin shit that folk from all over the place take part in. If u wanna pick out stereotypes, then again that is ur call, But I simply dont pick up on that and its a shame other people cant watch things with the same mindset.

  • to be fair, only the most hyper-sensitive people are gonna be really deeply offended over these stereotypes, the basis for asking if its racist i think lies in what reaction the ad is trying to provoke, aside from wanting kia-ora! I reckon the ads trying to make people laugh at the characters, is that good or bad? I really dont know, but they're definitely supposed to resemble black people character wise (not just the kid, the crows as well) Anyway, if you dont see it its not a bad thing really.

  • love this ad!

  • Its funny as a kid I had NO REASON to view this with ANY RACE - I just thought the crows were funny and liked how the sun was used as a basketball.

Things are simple when your little...

  • I always thought it was influenced by Cheech and Chong's Basketball Jones toon of 1975.

  • Ok. that comment was kinda extreme, I was tired tho. :)

  • fuck off and get a life......

this advert was for kids.....it's people like you that make this world unbearable for the rest of us.

  • Yeh? well guess what mate, you're an adult now. sorry for ruining you're nostalgic memory of a cartoon drink commercial with an alternate view..... -_-

  • retard!

  • oh fuck off u tiresome little rebel wannabes, is the world "unbearable" for u too? jesus......

  • Some time at the end of the 1980s the Black Crowes stopped advertising squash and start playing rock n roll.

I wonder if they will ever play this song again.

Alas, it is still too orangey for them, I'll wager.

They'll stick to the acid instead, I suppose. That way they can sustain an iridescent rainbow before their eyes. Thusly, no longer narrowing them down to the wavelength of one colour alone.
