Hey Doc, ex american football player here, my both shoulders are dislocating constantly(300+ times so far) and I learned to live with that.
What I'm wondering is I usually relocate them by trapping the dislocated shoulders' elbow under my pecs(which are muscley/bumpy) to create a natural leverage point, than pull on the elbow, hence creating room for the shoulder head which now slides back into its socket. At least thats what I hope I'm doing. Will this cause me trouble down the road?
@tatarjr49 it will. you're risking either a Bankart or SLAP injury. Both are avulsions of the labrum, which is the cartilage surrouding the glenoid cavity of the capula to give it depth, albeit in distinct geographical locations. You're also risking fracture of the bony rim of the glenoid when reducig the dislocation, although less likely. There's also the risk of a Hill-Sachs lesion, which I believe you already have and is the cause of your frequent dislocation. email me so I can tell you more
@sameotoko I dislocated my shoulder in an car accident about 5 years ago(age 18), it then dislocated a further 4 times that same year. i was told my case was borderline as to whether surgery or physiotherapy was the best option to treat injury properly. i done several months of physio which stopped the dislocating. my shoulder feels about 99% normal but they said based on x-rays the a/c joint isint alligned normally and it could be a problem when im an old man. Should i get it looked at again?
@anthonyoshea3308 the reason i asked is my shoulder kind of stops at a 90 degree angle if i was lifting a weight downwards from over the height of my head (like a high shelf), but if i was to lift it up again lean slightly forward and move my elbows closer together i could bring it down easily, should i be worried about this?
When I tore my labrum my arm was all the way out and I had to carry it. I couldntp put it back in my self an the doc did this to put it back in. Hurt like hell and I was like him. But I bonly had the first half happen. Now it pops out when ever it feels like it an I jus relaxas much as I can, step on my fingers to stretch it out and it goes in by its self. Freakin sucks
I dislocated my shoulder seven times and popped back in, first was terrible , during a fight and it stayed like that for a good 5minutes
Then soccer, soccer , soccer and one day at the park playing volleyball with some people I reached out back and bam that's when it hit me hard, ambulance, hospital I got 8 injections of morphine and then the strong injection I forgot what it was and yeah they came an hour or two later and put it back, wow I'll never forget the pain, but I was telling my broth
@SuperDeepFeel Not Kocher it is actually a modified technique but not Kocher. The beggining could be identified as such but not the rest of the technique.
Stimson's deffinitely. No patient can reduce their own shoulder dilocation on the first event. If they do, they've suffered it a number of times and there is a ropture of the anterior glenohumeral ligaments and joint capsule, which accounts for the joint laxitude. Have the patient lie on their belly with the arm hanging at the side of a table and attach about 10-12 lbs to tje wrist. Leave it there and wait for the joint to reduce
you stated that "No patient can reduce their own shoulder dilocation on the first event." but actually I was able to the very first time. However, since you and all other doctors apparently think this is impossible, I was not given proper treatment (no one believed it actually dislocated) and the problem became horrible (recurrent) and I saw around 10 doctors and physical therapists until finally 4 years later I found a doctor willing to treat it with a Bankart repair.
@elizabethclarisa no, the stimson maneuver is done with the patient lying on their stomach and the arm hangin down at the side of the table, with weight. And i'm a doctor
@xBreakxSilencex It is, but it has its own very specific indications. For one, I tend to reserve it for ver old patients. Kocher's maneuver poses a risk for a spiroid fracture o fthe proximal humeral shaft in these patients. The hypocratic maneuver can result in avulsion of the greter tuberosity of the humerus and sometimes neurological damage from pressure to the axilar nerve. Stimson's is less traumatic, but also less likely to work.
@sameotoko I just took a wilderness first aid course, and what was suggested for shoulder dislocations was either to use the stimson maneuver or have the patient pull his arm himself. Which do you suggest I should try first?
I remember when they put my shoulder back in I heard and felt a CLUNK and I was told it would instantly feel better...no it was sore for a long time. It has been 4 1/2 months and it still hurts sometimes.
I think something is messed up with my shoulder haha, if I move it a certain way it pops and I can feel the joint move. Sometimes when I reach for something it feels like my arm is about to pop out. I haven't broken the bone or had any dislocations
I dislocated my shoulder 4 months, three weeks ago, and it hasnt got better since, my shoulder now, cracks, snaps, clicks, and goes unstalbe whenever doing any simple task. all the stability i had before is long gone, all the power i had in my shoulder is long gone, i now cant even reach out to any over position, i can move the head of my humures at will, this injury is worst than death, when you die, you dont move ur shoulder, when you dislocate it, you DONT move it too.
Having gone through that -- I don't know what else that doctor can do but that was fantastic...... This should be required viewing for US Army doctors.
@TDSUSERS the first time is painful or course. after the 10th time you say to yourself, "aw crap, again. *sigh*" it also depends on how to dislocate it. When I dislocate throwing a football or something its pretty painful, but if im lifting or swinging my arms and it dislocates its just uncomfortable
here in focking holland they just pull on ur arm as hard as they can and they dont do shit here fock holland hate this fuck hole my sholder dislocated 16 times and they dont do any focking shit about it fock thisa!@
i recently dislocted my shoulder and really upset about it, its much like of being hadicapped, im doomed,

@sonnyafrica1 i have a dislocation problem on my left shoulder from skating and it hurts like hell i dislocated it today and yesterday it happened today bcus i was laying on my side and holding my head up with my left hand then crackkk my shoulder pops out the pain is so emmence. ive been skating for 11 years and i think i just jepordized it with my shoulder problems. ive dislocated it over 20 times.
@sonnyafrica1 i bet your better it happened to me and i know how you feel..however i was extremely upset b/c i enjoy working out..& b/c of my shoulder i couldnt workout for mre than a month..hope your better!
PEOPLE PLEASE, ii need to talk to anyone who dislocated theor arm, send me a message, please, we have to find a killer treatment for shoulder dislocation, please again please
@sameotoko no, it is called the stimson technique, and according to my readings it is ok. Done by doctors too. But a doctor wud usually put 5-10 pounds of weight around the wrist of the patient as the arm is hanging.
Again, it is simple, with minimal trauma and almost no pain.
@elizabethclarissa Assuming you're in that position to begin with. I'm allergic to morphine so they tried that way on me, I couldn't roll off my back to get into that position.
@fhdjskalg i sit on the ground, pull my knee up, interlace my fingers around my knee, then slowley lean back and extend my knee at the same time. its dangerous to do. but ive done it in the middle of a football game and kept playing. worst decision of my life.
I have something painful going on in my collar bone area on my left shoulder. Whenever i relax it or sort of drop it down it hurts badly, was doing curls when it happened, anyone know if this is a tear or maybe i pulled a muscle somehow. Been doing curls for a long time and never felt this before. Its very annoying as i have to have my left hand in my pockets so that the shoulder does not hurt...wierd ass injury.
How do you know the difference between a rotator cuff tear and a shoulder dislocation? I use to do lots of over head weights now my shoulder hurts pretty bad, i can't even work out anymore!
that sounds like a tear, a dislocation is quiet visible and all function of the arm goes very week,i have done both my shoulders a number of times now and it usaully occurs from impact, but i have instant relief when my shoulder's back inits just like a few minutes of hell when it's out.rotator cuff's do get punished when you do weights so stretch well warm up hard and if its real bad you probably need to get off to a specialist.
actually...i had surgery for my shoulder and it failed. my shoulder is always out of place and my posture is terrible. I have a different bone structure than most people....I am 6 foot 4 inches tall and i weigh 140 pounds. If anyone has remedies for posture or shoulder pain please contact me!!!
They've just started recently giving PRP injections (Platelet Rich Plasma) for cartilage in knees and tendons in elbows, but I am wondering whether this would be applicable to the ligaments of a dislocated shoulder. I would suggest looking up PRP, since it's too much to go into here, and finding some doctors who might be amenable to looking into this further. No idea whether it would work, but I'm hopeful.
your 6foot 4 and 140 pounds, For god sake man eat something. maybe if you were not just skin and bones you might not have this problem.muscle and weight do actually do something good.
140 is way to low for the height, no matter on any bone or body type.u should at least be 40 pounds more and 200 would not be out of the realm of norm for 6-4.
NEVER do this if you're not trained to do so. You don't know entirely what you're doing, so DON'T DO IT. Chances are you will cause more damage in doing so.
Just because you see somebody drive a car doesn't mean you should get behind the wheel.
what do you do when you are in magaluf at 6am and you dislocate your sholder? nearest doctor is 2 mile walk. i had a raandom lad pop mine back into place, but has come out twice since then. this hs only been a week,
Oh my God, i know how painful that is....it's the worst, the doctor's tried it on me one time, but mine was so bad, that i had to be knocked out, because this method wasn't working.
i thought this is kochers method, am i wrong

How to put it back YOURSELF with MINIMUM pain?
1st: Take several deep breaths and relax to slow your heart and relax your muscle around shoulder
2nd: Find a bench or table or anything that you can lay your chest on.
3rd: Put your dislocated side of your hand pointing down to the ground. Let it hang downward by its own weight.
4th: Keep breathing and relaxing. Your shoulder will get back in a few minutes.
That way you can put back in yourself with less pain and less damage on ligament and bone.
