Pssssttt, best disable comments or remove all related to the obnoxious children LOL ;) I had to do the same because of similar minded people bashing my sale videos.
BTW, it's been a few years, and out of curiosity, how's this filly turned out? Was last year her last derby year?
@RidinRopinCowgirl thanks for your comment, I have it set up now so that I have to "approve" all comments. The filly has turned out pretty good, not world class but very good. She's doing working cowhorse now and is a solid non-pro competitor.
@EllieHeartsHorses NO!!! I've just become aware that as a know-it-all teenager, you won't all of a sudden mature and make any comment worth keeping and my responses aren't necessary any longer. Much easier to just delete silly shit!!! So go bother someone else or just go cry to mama!!!
You think that I know nothing about 20 year old horses? I've been riding and involved with horses for over a decade now and am currently helping to train a horse. I've also had 3 ponies on loan who are over 20 so if I was you, I wouldn't claim that others know noting just because you have no clue what you're doing. I've never claimed to know everything but I do think that I know considerably more than you.
@EllieHeartsHorses Yeah, you THINK you know more than I do!! YOU DON"T!!!!! You just like to post crap here where you don't have to actually face anyone, now go away little girl and spout off to the little kiddies that you can actually impress with your BS. And YES I do think that you know nothing about horse of any kind at all. Go take a survey and see just how many people want advice about their horses from a teenage know it all. Get lost!!!
@HavvahartKL We're just barely pony loping, so maybe something wrong with your video playback. Reining is the most fun and challenging thing I've ever done and those involved are like one big family. So do come join the fun!!
@HavvahartKL Not particularly "difficult" but mistakes can really set you back, so it's very important to get coaching from someone pretty experienced in reining. This is especially true in the early training as bad habits can be very hard to deal with later.
@HavvahartKL yeah it wass probably just a playback issue, but it kinda does look like its flying to me... kinda cuz i would fall flat on my face if i would try probably lol
it always amazes me that so many people can't just enjoy watching a beautiful video and feel compelled to criticize things they really don't know anything about. SO, if you have some criticism, keep it to yourself or save it for your friends. I no longer will allow them to be posted here.
@cheerpower1996 stick to your teenage cheerleading because you know NOTHING about quarter horses and just prove it by opening your mouth. Now don't go away mad, JUST GO AWAY!!!!
While I don't necessarily agree with beginning training at two years old, it shouldn't be too bad if you don't ride the horse too much. A horse's bone structure is still developing. Carrying 150 pounds or the like on their back at that age for a long period of time could mess with their growth if overdone. I would personally wait until three or four, just because it feels wrong to start, essentially, a baby at two years old. But, to each his own.
@mustangmagick I will only say that all reining prospects are started at 2 years old and many are still competing, standing at stud and still having foals well into their 20s. So I fail to see the rational for waiting until they are 3 or 4 before starting training. You made a really good point about how much one rides while training, but I would say that it is just as important to be careful with a horse of any age. I've often see 5, 6 and 7 year old horses with overuse injuries!!
@SarahVstheClown I think we all know that teenagers like you don't know your ass from your elbow. You don't know crap about foal bone structure and that would have nothing to do with a 2 year old in any regard. I've been doing this longer than you've been alive. It's better to keep quiet than to prove how ignorant you are by opening your mouth with stupid comments. And starting quarter horses at 2 is the norm for most of the world except for moron teenagers who like to hear themselves blather.
@jmilchick Why the "big" bad words? Make you feel like an adult? It makes you sound like a prepubescent victim of fetal alcoholism syndrome. And actually, I'm a vet tech. Regardless of "how long" you've been doing this, it doesn't matter if you don't know about recent medical studies. Get up to date. And get a better vocabulary. Fuck tard.
@SarahVstheClown Vet tech?? what bullshit!!!! And just look in the mirror to see prepubescent. Like I said, as a teenager, you don't know your ass from your elbow. I rather think that ANY rational person would rather advise from someone with 20 years experience over a big mouthed teenager. Fuck tard??? Again, just look in the mirror, it's YOU with the limited vocabulary!!!!
@jmilchick I didn't mention it because it's my own business, not yours. You're creepy enough to bash a teenager so you're obviously creepy enough to stalk one too. :) And you hardly know me, dear. I think it's cute how you've responded to me like...4 times.
@SarahVstheClown If you knew something about your "own business", you would mind it. But you don't know about anything let alone horses. Everyone who reads this thread knows that a teenager leaving anonymous criticism is just another teenage asshole trying to convince themselves that they actually are important in some way. Sorry to tell you, you're not important in the least. So keep it up and just keep proving my point!!!
@jmilchick And why the heck are you so defensive about it? Because you know it's wrong? I've only been training for 6 years but I've ALWAYS done it with a vet to monitor the progress. 3 different vets. ALL have said to take your time and not to start serious stuff until the foal is 4. So who are you? Some cowboy that jizzes off to swearing at a teenager? Sick bastard. Read a damn book. It'd be good for you. And your horses. Look at the neg's on your video.I'm obviously not the only one...
@SarahVstheClown Not defensive at all, I don't need defense from a moron teenager. We have the best equine vets in the world here in KY and certainly don't need to listen to a teenager with limited brain cells. You know nothing about me or my horses yet feel free to stick your nose in my business. Are you this ignorant with everything?? Or just horses?? I'm guessing that you think you know everything about everything, but really know nothing, just try to fake it by blathering anonymously.
@jmilchick I obviously know something if I see you riding a 2 year old this hard. You're an idiot. Maybe you should talk to those awesome vets you keep mentioning. Grow up.
@SarahVstheClown If you knew something, you would just shut up and stop proving how much of a moron you are!!! But you just keep it up, you continually prove my points.
@SarahVstheClown rationalize all you like, everyone can see it says "SarahVs the clown". Just getting down to a level that YOU can actually understand. No one is forgetting just who started this shit moron.
@SarahVstheClown Sorry, but we all know that teenagers don't "train"!!!! Playing around and trail riding with the junk that mommy and daddy bought for you isn't "training". What a lying moron!! I notice that you conveniently don't say where you work as a "vet tech", because we both know you're a liar as well as ignorant.
@jmilchick Actually I've bought all my own tack for years. xD And I train my foals to state level before I move on to the next because the politics in horse showing are too damn annoying for me to deal with at a higher level. Winning doesn't mean shit to me. I do it for the horse. I just happen to win...frequently. And I actually hardly trail ride. lmao I'd give you the info for my business card or let you talk to some clients but like I said, you're a creep. :)
@SarahVstheClown Excuses excuses excuses, exactly what an ignorant, know it all teenager would say. You know nothing and try to bullshit your way anonymously on the internet. What a juvenile moron.
@3DayEventer100 Be consistent and practice often. Many think there is some fast way to train a horse, there isn't. Ride often, easy and consistent, you'll be amazed at the result you get.
Im surprised, because you SHOULD know an asshole because you look at one everytime you look in the mirror!! Of course, you're just to ignorant to have any clue-LMAO!!
The horse's registered name (AQHA) is Zihna. She is by Hotrod Doc Olena (Dry Doc/Doc Olena bred) and out of our foundation mare SP Bills Girl Friday (Poco Bueno/Te N TE bred). She was sold to a lady in CA and was training with Randy Paul for a while, but I've lost track now.
There are documentations and research that supports my comment. The spine in a horse isn't developed completely untill they are 6 years old. The areas still growing isn't made of bone yet. Hooves get ready first.
Insulting people who comments makes you..smart? Full of vanilla?
Keep talking, you just prove my point that you are full of shit and don't know your ass from your elbow about the development of horses. Get a life already, it's pretty sad when you get your jollies knocking others by internet. Like I said, you are still full of shit!!!
Ignorant people are easily amused, and by the way, I've been pretty consistent in saying that you are full of shit and know nothing about equine development. Since you are so ignorant, I'll repeat one more "YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT". I think that's pretty clear and consistent!!!
Wow that horse is one amazing reining prospect! For being a two year old I don't think I've seen another colt that amazing at their discipline at that age. We have a couple of two year olds and they are a handful...but slowly getting there. Keep up the great work!
Getting there slowly is a good thing. Reining is a discipline that that takes a lot of work and if you rush, you risk serious injury. Just let the horse tell you how fast to progress and how hard to work. BTW, thanks for the compliment. This horse was bought by a CA trainer and was ridden for a while by Randy Paul (one of the best).
The horse that just won the non-pro and intermediate non pro divisions in Las Vegas is 13 years old and has had a long and fruitful career. I think we know how to train reining horses these days.
I am currently training a two year old for reining. You've done a really nice job with your horse. Keep up the good work!
For those of you that think two years is too young and your horse will be lame by the time they're 8 you need to re think yourself. Find some more information about how horses are trained for reining. Don't comment unless you know what youare talking about.
Enjoy your TB. She will be fine as long as you take your cues about how long to ride, from her. Just don't push her when she is saying she's tired. You'll be fine, you'll bond with your horse, have a lot of fun and have her well trained. Instilling a good work ethic early is a key to developing a great horse.
Its not always the hard riding that is detrimental to a 2 year old people, its the repetition. Circle after Circle, the sliding stops. They are not mentally ready some all most arent, nor are their back muscles, knees, and ligaments. Starting a 2 year old is ok, as long as its very light riding. Learning how to carry a rider. Desentitizing, driving, flexing these are all good things. Give the horse a break. Stop asking for hard labor, until 3. YOU WILL GET BETTER RESULTS. .
And you know better than our Kentucky vets, right?? I don't think so, you just have to insert yourself for your own ego. You'd do better to worry more about your own horses and comment less on things you have no clue about.
My horse was broke at almost 2 and 1/2 (not by me...i didnt own him at the time) and when i got him months later, i didnt even start cantering him until he was 3 and 1/2. I have heard that he will go permanently lame by age 8. This is a relief to see...because she is doing perfectly fine at 2!
Thanks a bunch for the kind comment. This filly was a pleasure to ride, has been sold, and is now in training with one of the best reining trainers in the world. You have a good eye. Thanks again.
OMG PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! Get it threw ur damn heads!!!! It is very good to start training a horse at 2 years old! I have a 2 1/2 year old filly that is being trained as a barrel horse by me! I have her loping the pattern very well! I hate you people that say its bad to start a horse when there that young! It makes me very upset when I hear people saying that its bad to start them that young or that ur killing them! so please stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I totally agree with you on this point i have been breaking and training horses for 30 yr now. I start all of them at two so your doing fine keep up the good work
first of all, the person riding this horse is not riding her hard, plus he is not even a big person and her knees will not be shot. second, arabians,TB's, and quarter horse grow very differantly. unlike TB's and arabians a quarter horses bones are stockier and are built for more pressure.
so..just wondering, is riding a 2yo clydie cross ok?
just want to get some expert views on it.
because with my 2yo clydie x no one has said not to ride, but they shown concern and that. i ride him lightly, 3-4 times a week and just work on go, stop, turning and backing up.
There is nothing wrong with riding a 2 year old. With any horse, you have to be aware of the size and condition and ride accordingly. You might get some crap from narrow minded idiots that really don't know anything about training a horse. Mostly very young morons with a big mouth. Just ignore them or tell them to take a flying leap and worry about their own horses. Best wishes in your efforts with your clydie cross.
Another comment from someone who obviously doesn't know their ass from their elbow. Many, many reining horses started at 2, are still showing at 18 or 20. Do you think that your negative comments actually impress anyone? It just shows your ignorance.
LOL....could not have said it better my self.....you can start them at 2 no problem! These people think that a 2 year old is going to be riden hard? If they knew anything about reining horses they would know that all the primary exercises are done at a slow walking pace.
thanks for the video that is a good horse and an even better rider i have been training horses for years and it is nice to see somebody that knows how it all works!!
i have an arabian filly thats almost 2, i would even think about riding her at this point, but some horses grow faster than others, this horse seams to be of good size so i dont see much wrong with it, although if it were my horse i would wait tell it was 3. but thats just me.
That's a REALLY NICE horse. He has the smoothest lead changes I've ever seen. I am getting ready to have an 18 month old started by the Rogers here in NC. My daughter is a barrel racer and is now starting college which means I can finally do reining. I can use her ex reiner barrel horse as a practice horse. I hope to show in green reiner classes when the colt is finished out but am REALLY afraid i'll never remember all the paterns!! LOL But Good luck with "Smooch"..
Yes, I own Hollywood Mojo (we call him Smooch). The rider in these videos is Pierre Luc Phaneuf who was working with Craig Schmersal at the time. This year he's being ridden by Francois Gauthier. They won $5000 at the Carolina Classic Derby in early June scoring a 218.5
In defense of this guy...1)A well respected reining trainer I know here in NC starts 2year olds...always has..no problems...2) Reiners aren't "sclouching"...It is the way they ride. It is a way reiners cue their horses by shifting weight from "cheek to cheek". Watch Dell Hendricks or any of the other pros. They ride the same way sitting down on their back pockets. This guy is sitting correctly on a reiner...
Nice to hear from someone that actually uses their brain when making a comment instead of just posting what they feel. Your comments are right on the money. It isn't when you start them, it's how hard you ride them and how well you treat them. As I said, my horses get the best of care from me and the best equine vets in the world. Thanks for your rational perspective on this issue.
lol,,,you didnt check anything, the only thing you have is a big mouth, and do not do anything for these horses,,,,we will see who wins this battle my friend,,,we shall see.
I certainly did check and you are an old fraud trying to impress the youngsters here on youtube. You're just an old biddy trying to connect with the kids. And full of shit at that.
There is nothing sadder than a middle age witch trying to impress kids with lies. You are right about one thing, we shall see. And if I didn't check anything, how come I know that you didn't win shit at congress? You didn't even know the correct names of the classes. You're just a lying old biddy.
hi there i would just like to say i have a 2 year old and wouldn't consider riding her at the moment as i have only just bought her and she doesn't know the basics every horse is different and mature at different levels i generally wouldn't ride a 2 year old as their bodies aren't mature enough but saying that racehorses are racing at 2 and your quarter horse looks perfectly happy and well cared for and i wish i could ride with that much control well done and what a beautiful horse by the way.
Thank you, she is a beauty and easy to train. My horses all get the best of care and are cleared by a performance horse veterinarian before they go into training. This filly is currently in training with one of the top reining horse trainers in the world (in Arizona), so I don't think that I managed to damage her any. You could ride with that control too, it's not magic by any means.
Most good trainer and veterinaries will always tell you that two year old's are getting tore up by circle's and riding to soon, I have a degree in Veterinary medicine, and sports medicine as well. I showed and won in Congress in 1996 in the Two Year old Western Pleasure event, I do know what I am talking about.
I've checked your educational claims and you are a freakin liar. You don't have a freaking clue. Hundreds of 2 year olds are started every year and I rather think that we would all know of the scandal if they were killing their knees. There are many, many reiners still going strong in their teens and twenties. Try selling your shit to someone that will believe your lying mouth.
Also, speaking of lying, there is no two year old western pleasure class. They have junior and senior or amateur/novice. Talk about full of shit. You're just a middle age biddy trying to impress the youngsters here on youtube. Get a life moron.
As I said before, you're just an old biddy that trys to impress the youngsters. Those of us that have been around, know you are full of shit. On top of everything, you are a freaking liar too. You never won shit at congress and have no degrees in veterinary science or sports medicine. What an old bag of shit you are.
Thats really great. How did you get her to stop hard on her hind quaters like that, and to lope nice circles with out gunning through or a fight? Please answer back.
If the nag has bin well lked after, well fed n well handled, there isnt a prob. TBs mature faster than most n I dont know about QH, but this nag lks happy n REALLY well trained! :o) My warmblood filly is almst 2 but I'm not even going to try and put a saddle on her until she is 3/4 because when I got her (a few weeks ago lol) she was very malnourished. My TB on the other hand was been raced @ 2 n she was fine. I'm so jeolous. That is such a cool horse! :o)
you are smart because warmbloods are like arabians, even more so they mature very slow. You shouldnt start a warmblood before three and as far as I know alot of people dont ride them until they are four.
Dude kid shut up!!! Wow a fuckin jumper!! I garentee his horse is 100% sound and could run circles around yours! What is it an OTTB?? Can i say a piece of JUNK? I had a OTTB and jumped it over a barrel i guess that makes me a trainer too??? HMMMM If you want to ride real horses i suggest you buy a 2 year old AQHA i garentee that its more broke and sound then any jumper!! Where i train theres a 6 year old learning to ride on a 22 month old AQHA and passed xrays and vet check with flying colors!!!
Its great to see another person who rides a 2 year old, IDONT GET IT, what people are saying about ridng them so young, there still as happy as can be still get to play, and there all sound!!! Where i train our yearling are broke around 1.5 yrs old + - there ability! Your horse is going awesome! GOOD LUCK, hope to see you at congress! Good luck!
Wow that's pretty great for a two year old. Just a question is he/she a long two year old (2.5 years), or just plain 2? I have a little 2 year old QH filly I want to train this summer.
Hello, she was just barely 2 at this time, but she was born early in the year and also matured early. I rode her foe a few month and sold her to a professional trainer in CA. You just have to go slow and not ask more than your horse can handle. It's important to keep them liking their job and to avoid injuries.
this is is very well started. it has a good foundation and looks like its enjoying its job. like others have been saying 2 year olds typically have a shorter attention span. but they are perfectly fine if you just lightly work them and don't force them to do too much then they can do.
One thing that does bother me a little is the headset you're trying to get. if i was you i would wait a little longer to work on that.
I believe the age that you start a horse is dependent on the breed. Typically your dressage folks are riding warmbloods that mature much slower than the average quarter horse...just my two cents...
BEAUTIFUL filly jmilchick! I wish my 3 year old stud was this well schooled...it would make my days so much easier. Ignore everyone throwing comments from the peanut gallery...
Me, personally, I think reining/cutting is the western equivalent of Dressage. But technically, the word dressage, means "to train" so i guess everyone does "dressage". but i do agree that different breeds (especially the horse itself) matures faster/slower to others. It really depends on the horse, and the job that he/she is expected to do. As long as the horse is never rushed, at any age, and you htink about their mental and physical health. then you are golden.
I agree that a horse can be started at 2yrs and still be fine. The only thing I have noticed with the younger ones, which any trainer should know, is that they lose their attention span fairly quick and they can tire fairly quickly. Its just about taking your time and putting down a good foundation. This filly, in my opinion, has definitely had that foundation, otherwise she wouldn't ride so nice. PS dressagepinky, western doesn't ride with sticks up their butts & no such thing as perfect.
I had the same thought. Western riders don't ride with a stick up their butt. Glad you said it or they would just accuse me of being defensive. Thanks.
I thought reining was supposed to be "western dressage", and classically trained dressage horses don't start saddle work until 4 yrs of age but they are also expected to work well into their 20's. This filly is obviously well trained, but I'd like to see the rider sit tall and not slouch so much-you lose the ability to use the seat as a driving aid, which will be important for her lead changes. Hope I don't get screamed at for saying that!
I don't know why you morons feel compelled to leave critical remarks. Didn't your momma ever tell you that "if you can't say something nice, just shut up". Anyway, reining is NOT dressage and we start our horses at 2. Perhaps you should criticize dressage videos about which you might actually know something. Better yet, why don't you just worry about your own horses.
Yeah I think it's compared to dressage because of the complexity of the movements and the types of moves that the horse has to do..only of course it's western and not english...I agree it's fine to start horses at 2...I do...just so long as they're physically (and mentally!) mature enough.
theya re perfectly fine 2 be broke at 2. I use2 work at the trainign barn, with 2 of the top trainers in the world&thier horses win champion, @ congress. they are fine to be ridden. if they were not ready then y do so many trainign barns have them broke@ that age?
lol..probably to get them into the futurities faster and win money, if you want to get technical...I do think it's ok for them to be broke at 2..but there are some trainers who CAN ruin a horse by rushing them into a finished product way too fast, just to get them into a futurity.
so keep your comments to yourself until you can have complete proof and a justified explanation of what you are trying to say. i would proved links to my justified information but that would be too many web links. trying to help out good people (jmilchick) who are constantly put down for something that is obviously right. if you do not believe me or jmilchick, call your local vet or veternary institute and ask them for their opinion. you have a beautiful n intelligent filly jmilchick. congrats!
i am tired of people who just want their opinion to be heard and have someone else think that they are the ultimate trainer. hat to break your luck but if you dont A) keep the health of the horse first, you will go no where B)if you do not listen to your horse, you will learn nothing. i keep an open mind about all training methods. something for one horse may not work for another. so before you show your own intelligence level to other people who will form a opinion about you,
the filly has a good rider on her; her training is soft. ask any of the top professionals and they say that they ride their horses at 2 years old. as long as the training is done responsibly, Which for this filly the video shows this, then their is no problem. i start getting my yearlings ready for riding in the winter of their yearling year. i start with letting them have a bit in their mouth, wearing a saddle, and lots and lots of groundwork. no not "running the crap" out of them.
strain on the horses legs. And everyone else who is saying a 2 year old cannot be ridden is completely oblivious, as long as the vet says that the horse can be ridden, it is fine as long as it is done slowly to build up the neccessary muscles. To say that this horse is going to be broke down at 6 is complete bullcrap unless the horse is completely strained, which for 3 months of training in a 8 minute video showing how smart this filly is, does not seem straining.
to LifeLovinCowgirl, anyone who "runs the crap" out of a horse in round pen or on a lunge line does NOT know how to handle their horse. I am tired of seeing completely STUPID people run their horses around on the end of a lunge line at shows to "take the fresh off" or "calm, them down". THis only hurts the horse physically and makes them more prone to mental condidtions. DO you find yourself having to send your horse to the trainers more to get her ready for a show? that puts way too much
In Kentucky we have the best vets in the world and they say it's perfectly fine to start a horse at 2 years old as long as the hose gets regular veterinary care.
She looks like she learns fast for only three months of riding. I wouldnt start her until she was three but thats not my choice and every horses knees grow differently. If your vet says go for it then I would.
Very good work kepp it up! =D By the way i've just started getting into Western (i'm 14 and find it an incredible sport) and I was wondering if you had any tips for me as I have a QP X Arab X Welsh Pony mare thats turned 12 in feb 07 and would it be possible to still train her up for barrels?
Jumpers wait to even ride their horses until 5 or 6, which i think is to long. someone mentioned that older horses are harder to break, i agree, most have set their ways by then.
i agree with you on allowing older horses to compete at the NRHA futurities, i wish NCHA would allow it also. but people who train these horses take into consideration what the stress is on the tendons. They liniment the legs more than 4 times a week, they are on supplements for healthy joints and are checked by vets regularly. If anything the TB racing cares less about the horse's legs than NRHA and NCHA.
How about because these are high level performance horse that train for a specific event at 3 years old. There was nothing hard about the work this filly is asked to do, she never breaks a sweat. You would do better to worry about your own horses, but I suspect that you've never trained a horse in your life.
If you look at this mare Lenny the way she is built you will find she is confomationally ready for this type of work. She seems to carry herself quite fine, in fact she's the nicest 2 year old I've seen in a while. ! He is not pushing her in the lope it seems she is setting her own pace. There is also a form of protective gear so at least the trainer is acknowledging that! I don't see any problem with it. Great job.
Pssssttt, best disable comments or remove all related to the obnoxious children LOL ;) I had to do the same because of similar minded people bashing my sale videos.
BTW, it's been a few years, and out of curiosity, how's this filly turned out? Was last year her last derby year?
RidinRopinCowgirl 2 months ago
@RidinRopinCowgirl thanks for your comment, I have it set up now so that I have to "approve" all comments. The filly has turned out pretty good, not world class but very good. She's doing working cowhorse now and is a solid non-pro competitor.

You seem to have deleted my previous comments, and yours. Are you finally aware that I'm correct? :)

I've been riding and involved with horses for over a decade now and am currently helping to train a horse. is your video in real time? You look like your FLYING! I'd love to get into reining...it looks like so much fun.
HavvahartKL 11 months ago
@HavvahartKL We're just barely pony loping, so maybe something wrong with your video playback. Reining is the most fun and challenging thing I've ever done and those involved are like one big family. So do come join the fun!!

@jmilchick yea, there must be....hahaha sorry for the confusion! how difficult is it to train a horse for reining?

@HavvahartKL Not particularly "difficult" but mistakes can really set you back, so it's very important to get coaching from someone pretty experienced in reining. This is especially true in the early training as bad habits can be very hard to deal with later.

it always amazes me that so many people can't just enjoy watching a beautiful video and feel compelled to criticize things they really don't know anything about. SO, if you have some criticism, keep it to yourself or save it for your friends. I no longer will allow them to be posted here.
jmilchick 11 months ago
@cheerpower1996 stick to your teenage cheerleading because you know NOTHING about quarter horses and just prove it by opening your mouth. Now don't go away mad, JUST GO AWAY!!!!
jmilchick 11 months ago
While I don't necessarily agree with beginning training at two years old, it shouldn't be too bad if you don't ride the horse too much. A horse's bone structure is still developing. Carrying 150 pounds or the like on their back at that age for a long period of time could mess with their growth if overdone. I would personally wait until three or four, just because it feels wrong to start, essentially, a baby at two years old. But, to each his own.
mustangmagick 1 year ago
@mustangmagick I will only say that all reining prospects are started at 2 years old and many are still competing, standing at stud and still having foals well into their 20s. So I fail to see the rational for waiting until they are 3 or 4 before starting training. You made a really good point about how much one rides while training, but I would say that it is just as important to be careful with a horse of any age. I've often see 5, 6 and 7 year old horses with overuse injuries!!
jmilchick 1 year ago
@MinkaPata I guess you don't work with American Quarter Horses very much because it is "normal" to start riding them at 2 years old
jmilchick 1 year ago
@jmilchick Bull. Maybe for you but not for someone who knows the basics on foal bone structure...
SarahVstheClown 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown I think we all know that teenagers like you don't know your ass from your elbow. You don't know crap about foal bone structure and that would have nothing to do with a 2 year old in any regard. I've been doing this longer than you've been alive. It's better to keep quiet than to prove how ignorant you are by opening your mouth with stupid comments. And starting quarter horses at 2 is the norm for most of the world except for moron teenagers who like to hear themselves blather.
jmilchick 1 year ago
@jmilchick Why the "big" bad words? Make you feel like an adult? It makes you sound like a prepubescent victim of fetal alcoholism syndrome. And actually, I'm a vet tech. Regardless of "how long" you've been doing this, it doesn't matter if you don't know about recent medical studies. Get up to date. And get a better vocabulary. Fuck tard.
SarahVstheClown 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown Vet tech?? what bullshit!!!! And just look in the mirror to see prepubescent. Like I said, as a teenager, you don't know your ass from your elbow. I rather think that ANY rational person would rather advise from someone with 20 years experience over a big mouthed teenager. Fuck tard??? Again, just look in the mirror, it's YOU with the limited vocabulary!!!!
jmilchick 1 year ago
@jmilchick I didn't mention it because it's my own business, not yours. You're creepy enough to bash a teenager so you're obviously creepy enough to stalk one too. :) And you hardly know me, dear. I think it's cute how you've responded to me like...4 times.
SarahVstheClown 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown If you knew something about your "own business", you would mind it. But you don't know about anything let alone horses. Everyone who reads this thread knows that a teenager leaving anonymous criticism is just another teenage asshole trying to convince themselves that they actually are important in some way. Sorry to tell you, you're not important in the least. So keep it up and just keep proving my point!!!
jmilchick 1 year ago
@jmilchick And why the heck are you so defensive about it? Because you know it's wrong? I've only been training for 6 years but I've ALWAYS done it with a vet to monitor the progress. 3 different vets. ALL have said to take your time and not to start serious stuff until the foal is 4. So who are you? Some cowboy that jizzes off to swearing at a teenager? Sick bastard. Read a damn book. It'd be good for you. And your horses. Look at the neg's on your video.I'm obviously not the only one...
SarahVstheClown 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown Not defensive at all, I don't need defense from a moron teenager. We have the best equine vets in the world here in KY and certainly don't need to listen to a teenager with limited brain cells. You know nothing about me or my horses yet feel free to stick your nose in my business. Are you this ignorant with everything?? Or just horses?? I'm guessing that you think you know everything about everything, but really know nothing, just try to fake it by blathering anonymously.
jmilchick 1 year ago
@jmilchick I obviously know something if I see you riding a 2 year old this hard. You're an idiot. Maybe you should talk to those awesome vets you keep mentioning. Grow up.
SarahVstheClown 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown If you knew something, you would just shut up and stop proving how much of a moron you are!!! But you just keep it up, you continually prove my points.
jmilchick 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown SarahV "the clown", how utterly appropriate. You're totally laughable!!!!!
jmilchick 1 year ago
@jmilchick It obviously says "Vs the clown", idiot. Learn how to read. You're so mature for making a joke about that.
SarahVstheClown 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown rationalize all you like, everyone can see it says "SarahVs the clown". Just getting down to a level that YOU can actually understand. No one is forgetting just who started this shit moron.
jmilchick 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown Sorry, but we all know that teenagers don't "train"!!!! Playing around and trail riding with the junk that mommy and daddy bought for you isn't "training". What a lying moron!! I notice that you conveniently don't say where you work as a "vet tech", because we both know you're a liar as well as ignorant.
jmilchick 1 year ago
@jmilchick Actually I've bought all my own tack for years. xD And I train my foals to state level before I move on to the next because the politics in horse showing are too damn annoying for me to deal with at a higher level. Winning doesn't mean shit to me. I do it for the horse. I just happen to win...frequently. And I actually hardly trail ride. lmao I'd give you the info for my business card or let you talk to some clients but like I said, you're a creep. :)
SarahVstheClown 1 year ago
@SarahVstheClown Excuses excuses excuses, exactly what an ignorant, know it all teenager would say. You know nothing and try to bullshit your way anonymously on the internet. What a juvenile moron.

just out of curiousity whats this horses reg. name? how is it bred?
steadyshinalena 1 year ago
The horse's registered name (AQHA) is Zihna. She is by Hotrod Doc Olena (Dry Doc/Doc Olena bred) and out of our foundation mare SP Bills Girl Friday (Poco Bueno/Te N TE bred). She was sold to a lady in CA and was training with Randy Paul for a while, but I've lost track now.

It's just that the spine isn't even made of bone untill they're 6, and the knee caps arn't even ready at 2... :/
nanakla 2 years ago
You are so full of shit as to be ludicrous!!
jmilchick 2 years ago
There are documentations and research that supports my comment. The spine in a horse isn't developed completely untill they are 6 years old. The areas still growing isn't made of bone yet. Hooves get ready first.
Insulting people who comments makes you..smart? Full of vanilla?
nanakla 1 year ago
Keep talking, you just prove my point that you are full of shit and don't know your ass from your elbow about the development of horses. Get a life already, it's pretty sad when you get your jollies knocking others by internet. Like I said, you are still full of shit!!!
jmilchick 1 year ago
It's quite amusing to read your clever comments and insults with no relevant consistency at all.
nanakla 1 year ago
Ignorant people are easily amused, and by the way, I've been pretty consistent in saying that you are full of shit and know nothing about equine development. Since you are so ignorant, I'll repeat one more "YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT". I think that's pretty clear and consistent!!!
jmilchick 1 year ago
Wow that horse is one amazing reining prospect! For being a two year old I don't think I've seen another colt that amazing at their discipline at that age. We have a couple of two year olds and they are a handful...but slowly getting there. Keep up the great work!
softballbabiii14 2 years ago
Getting there slowly is a good thing. Reining is a discipline that that takes a lot of work and if you rush, you risk serious injury. Just let the horse tell you how fast to progress and how hard to work. BTW, thanks for the compliment. This horse was bought by a CA trainer and was ridden for a while by Randy Paul (one of the best).
jmilchick 2 years ago
The horse that just won the non-pro and intermediate non pro divisions in Las Vegas is 13 years old and has had a long and fruitful career. I think we know how to train reining horses these days.
jmilchick 2 years ago
I am currently training a two year old for reining. You've done a really nice job with your horse. Keep up the good work!
For those of you that think two years is too young and your horse will be lame by the time they're 8 you need to re think yourself. Find some more information about how horses are trained for reining. Don't comment unless you know what youare talking about.
rockymountain357 2 years ago
fo real? cause i have 2 yr old tb and i ride her walk trot right now and i was told she would befine doing that...
BessKeptSecert 2 years ago
Enjoy your TB. She will be fine as long as you take your cues about how long to ride, from her. Just don't push her when she is saying she's tired. You'll be fine, you'll bond with your horse, have a lot of fun and have her well trained. Instilling a good work ethic early is a key to developing a great horse.
jmilchick 2 years ago
Its not always the hard riding that is detrimental to a 2 year old people, its the repetition. Circle after Circle, the sliding stops. They are not mentally ready some all most arent, nor are their back muscles, knees, and ligaments. Starting a 2 year old is ok, as long as its very light riding. Learning how to carry a rider. Desentitizing, driving, flexing these are all good things. Give the horse a break. Stop asking for hard labor, until 3. YOU WILL GET BETTER RESULTS. .
martinipancakes 2 years ago
And you know better than our Kentucky vets, right?? I don't think so, you just have to insert yourself for your own ego. You'd do better to worry more about your own horses and comment less on things you have no clue about.
jmilchick 2 years ago
Just keep working at it, you will get there. Best wishes.

Best of luck with your future horses!

sassycheo 3 years ago
first of all, the person riding this horse is not riding her hard, plus he is not even a big person and her knees will not be shot. second, arabians,TB's, and quarter horse grow very differantly. unlike TB's and arabians a quarter horses bones are stockier and are built for more pressure.

nice horse :)
so..just wondering, is riding a 2yo clydie cross ok?
just want to get some expert views on it.
because with my 2yo clydie x no one has said not to ride, but they shown concern and that. i ride him lightly, 3-4 times a week and just work on go, stop, turning and backing up.
is there anything wrong with that?
thanks if anyone sensible replies :)
FairytaleHorses 3 years ago

It just shows your ignorance.
jmilchick 3 years ago
LOL....could not have said it better my self.....you can start them at 2 no problem! These people think that a 2 year old is going to be riden hard? If they knew anything about reining horses they would know that all the primary exercises are done at a slow walking pace.

i have an arabian filly thats almost 2, i would even think about riding her at this point, but some horses grow faster than others, this horse seams to be of good size so i dont see much wrong with it, although if it were my horse i would wait tell it was 3. but thats just me.
TwilightArabians04 3 years ago
That's a REALLY NICE horse. He has the smoothest lead changes I've ever seen. I am getting ready to have an 18 month old started by the Rogers here in NC. My daughter is a barrel racer and is now starting college which means I can finally do reining. I can use her ex reiner barrel horse as a practice horse. I hope to show in green reiner classes when the colt is finished out but am REALLY afraid i'll never remember all the paterns!! LOL But Good luck with "Smooch"..
teena1961 3 years ago
Do you own Hollywood Mojo? Really nice horse...Who was riding him in the video?
teena1961 3 years ago
Yes, I own Hollywood Mojo (we call him Smooch). The rider in these videos is Pierre Luc Phaneuf who was working with Craig Schmersal at the time. This year he's being ridden by Francois Gauthier. They won $5000 at the Carolina Classic Derby in early June scoring a 218.5
jmilchick 3 years ago
In defense of this guy...1)A well respected reining trainer I know here in NC starts 2year olds...always has..no problems...2) Reiners aren't "sclouching"...It is the way they ride. It is a way reiners cue their horses by shifting weight from "cheek to cheek". Watch Dell Hendricks or any of the other pros. They ride the same way sitting down on their back pockets. This guy is sitting correctly on a reiner...
teena1961 3 years ago
Nice to hear from someone that actually uses their brain when making a comment instead of just posting what they feel. Your comments are right on the money. It isn't when you start them, it's how hard you ride them and how well you treat them. As I said, my horses get the best of care from me and the best equine vets in the world. Thanks for your rational perspective on this issue.
jmilchick 3 years ago
lol,,,you didnt check anything, the only thing you have is a big mouth, and do not do anything for these horses,,,,we will see who wins this battle my friend,,,we shall see.
cowgirl2sassy 3 years ago
I certainly did check and you are an old fraud trying to impress the youngsters here on youtube. You're just an old biddy trying to connect with the kids. And full of shit at that.
jmilchick 3 years ago
There is nothing sadder than a middle age witch trying to impress kids with lies. You are right about one thing, we shall see. And if I didn't check anything, how come I know that you didn't win shit at congress? You didn't even know the correct names of the classes. You're just a lying old biddy.
jmilchick 3 years ago
hi there i would just like to say i have a 2 year old and wouldn't consider riding her at the moment as i have only just bought her and she doesn't know the basics every horse is different and mature at different levels i generally wouldn't ride a 2 year old as their bodies aren't mature enough but saying that racehorses are racing at 2 and your quarter horse looks perfectly happy and well cared for and i wish i could ride with that much control well done and what a beautiful horse by the way.
lindsariah 3 years ago
Thank you, she is a beauty and easy to train. My horses all get the best of care and are cleared by a performance horse veterinarian before they go into training. This filly is currently in training with one of the top reining horse trainers in the world (in Arizona), so I don't think that I managed to damage her any. You could ride with that control too, it's not magic by any means.
jmilchick 3 years ago
Most good trainer and veterinaries will always tell you that two year old's are getting tore up by circle's and riding to soon, I have a degree in Veterinary medicine, and sports medicine as well. I showed and won in Congress in 1996 in the Two Year old Western Pleasure event, I do know what I am talking about.
cowgirl2sassy 3 years ago
I've checked your educational claims and you are a freakin liar. You don't have a freaking clue. Hundreds of 2 year olds are started every year and I rather think that we would all know of the scandal if they were killing their knees. There are many, many reiners still going strong in their teens and twenties. Try selling your shit to someone that will believe your lying mouth.
jmilchick 3 years ago
Also, speaking of lying, there is no two year old western pleasure class. They have junior and senior or amateur/novice. Talk about full of shit. You're just a middle age biddy trying to impress the youngsters here on youtube. Get a life moron.
jmilchick 3 years ago
As I said before, you're just an old biddy that trys to impress the youngsters. Those of us that have been around, know you are full of shit. On top of everything, you are a freaking liar too. :o)
DreamOfMercy 3 years ago
you are smart because warmbloods are like arabians, even more so they mature very slow.

Wow that's pretty great for a two year old. Just a question is he/she a long two year old (2.5 years), or just plain 2? I have a little 2 year old QH filly I want to train this summer.
HorseAngel31 3 years ago
Hello, she was just barely 2 at this time, but she was born early in the year and also matured early. I rode her foe a few month and sold her to a professional trainer in CA. You just have to go slow and not ask more than your horse can handle. It's important to keep them liking their job and to avoid injuries.
jmilchick 3 years ago
That's great! She really looks like she enjoys herself!
HorseAngel31 3 years ago
this is is very well started. it has a good foundation and looks like its enjoying its job. like others have been saying 2 year olds typically have a shorter attention span. but they are perfectly fine if you just lightly work them and don't force them to do too much then they can do.
One thing that does bother me a little is the headset you're trying to get. if i was you i would wait a little longer to work on that.
but very very nice horse and nice rider.

paygiepoppers 3 years ago
I believe the age that you start a horse is dependent on the breed. Typically your dressage folks are riding warmbloods that mature much slower than the average quarter horse...just my two cents...
gotothetwilight 3 years ago
BEAUTIFUL filly jmilchick! I wish my 3 year old stud was this well schooled...it would make my days so much easier. Ignore everyone throwing comments from the peanut gallery...
hohnhorst1987 3 years ago
Thank you! Just keep working with your colt, I'm sure he will be cool. A positive attitude is half the battle.
jmilchick 3 years ago
Me, personally, I think reining/cutting is the western equivalent of Dressage. But technically, the word dressage, means "to train" so i guess everyone does "dressage". but i do agree that different breeds (especially the horse itself) matures faster/slower to others. It really depends on the horse, and the job that he/she is expected to do. As long as the horse is never rushed, at any age, and you htink about their mental and physical health. then you are golden.
CoolHandLuke17 3 years ago
Nicely said. Far too many have negative comments when they have no personal knowledge of the horse or rider involved.
jmilchick 3 years ago
I agree that a horse can be started at 2yrs and still be fine. The only thing I have noticed with the younger ones, which any trainer should know, is that they lose their attention span fairly quick and they can tire fairly quickly. Its just about taking your time and putting down a good foundation. This filly, in my opinion, has definitely had that foundation, otherwise she wouldn't ride so nice. PS dressagepinky, western doesn't ride with sticks up their butts & no such thing as perfect.
SaraRBar 3 years ago
I had the same thought. Western riders don't ride with a stick up their butt. Glad you said it or they would just accuse me of being defensive. Thanks.
jmilchick 3 years ago
I thought reining was supposed to be "western dressage", and classically trained dressage horses don't start saddle work until 4 yrs of age but they are also expected to work well into their 20's. This filly is obviously well trained, but I'd like to see the rider sit tall and not slouch so much-you lose the ability to use the seat as a driving aid, which will be important for her lead changes. Hope I don't get screamed at for saying that!
dressagepinky 3 years ago
I don't know why you morons feel compelled to leave critical remarks. Didn't your momma ever tell you that "if you can't say something nice, just shut up". Anyway, reining is NOT dressage and we start our horses at 2. Perhaps you should criticize dressage videos about which you might actually know something. Better yet, why don't you just worry about your own horses.
jmilchick 3 years ago
Yeah I think it's compared to dressage because of the complexity of the movements and the types of moves that the horse has to do..only of course it's western and not english...I agree it's fine to start horses at 2...I do...just so long as they're physically (and mentally!) mature enough.
Ilovereining 3 years ago
theya re perfectly fine 2 be broke at 2. I use2 work at the trainign barn, with 2 of the top trainers in the world&thier horses win champion, @ congress. they are fine to be ridden. if they were not ready then y do so many trainign barns have them broke@ that age?
IloveDerango 4 years ago
lol..probably to get them into the futurities faster and win money, if you want to get technical...I do think it's ok for them to be broke at 2..but there are some trainers who CAN ruin a horse by rushing them into a finished product way too fast, just to get them into a futurity.
Ilovereining 3 years ago
so keep your comments to yourself until you can have complete proof and a justified explanation of what you are trying to say. i would proved links to my justified information but that would be too many web links. trying to help out good people (jmilchick) who are constantly put down for something that is obviously right. if you do not believe me or jmilchick, call your local vet or veternary institute and ask them for their opinion. you have a beautiful n intelligent filly jmilchick. congrats!
CoolHandLuke17 4 years ago
i am tired of people who just want their opinion to be heard and have someone else think that they are the ultimate trainer. hat to break your luck but if you dont A) keep the health of the horse first, you will go no where B)if you do not listen to your horse, you will learn nothing. i keep an open mind about all training methods. something for one horse may not work for another. so before you show your own intelligence level to other people who will form a opinion about you,
CoolHandLuke17 4 years ago
the filly has a good rider on her; her training is soft. ask any of the top professionals and they say that they ride their horses at 2 years old. as long as the training is done responsibly, Which for this filly the video shows this, then their is no problem. i start getting my yearlings ready for riding in the winter of their yearling year. i start with letting them have a bit in their mouth, wearing a saddle, and lots and lots of groundwork. no not "running the crap" out of them.
CoolHandLuke17 4 years ago
strain on the horses legs.
CoolHandLuke17 4 years ago
to LifeLovinCowgirl, anyone who "runs the crap" out of a horse in round pen or on a lunge line does NOT know how to handle their horse.

Great job.
