More positives will be the breakdown of the distribution of goods and services by the corporate big box retailers. Goods and services will have to be brought closer to the consumer. Probaly via family owned businesses like pre 1980's. In addition, manufacturing will come back to the USA as it will be too expensive to ship goods from China. Cheap gas gave rise to the corporations. Expensive gas will give rise to small business again.
Electric tiller can run on solar panels? How can anyone enjoy flying with TSA? Less time spent commuting more time doing other things. We will know our local politicians better. I would favor RIGHT NOW using a lane on the interstate for RAIL TRANSPORT. Less cars would mean we could ride our bikes without getting killed by an asshole texting. Less money spent on cars and insurance bikes are easier to maintain too. Battery bikes will be the norm with aerodynamic skins quick change batteries.
@cdltpx Thanks for the comment...yes, there are a ton of e-bikes in China and those will slowly make way to the states if there was actually a place to ride...
One possitive I see is more standarization in public transportation.more buses, trains, trams etc.this will lower our carbon footprint, and place people as a whole in a more "were in this together" mentality. Of course there will be negatives within this, you'll have transportation predators, like what's been happening in newyork city's subway system.but that can be controlled to a point.
@TheSillydad Yes, they'll race to build up mass transit as a response to Peak Oil but only where it's practical. No new train lines or anything like that will be built, just adding more rail cars etc... more buses on existing routes.
The first thing you Americans need to do is to stop buying that F-150. 12 MPG isn't gonna be sustainable for long. Who's gonna buy the truck/SUV when oil decline starts?
If you start with better fuel efficiency in cars, it will buy some time and improve over all energy consumption.
Better electric rail and bus systems will be a good effect of peak oil.
@sangolt88 Giving up the SUV or Truck won't happen until people are forced to and on their backs financially. It will be too late by then of course. Our mass transit stinks in the states with the suburban car based sprawl as you know..... but mass transit will be expanded and freight lines converted to passenger rail. No money for high speed dreams.
Jobs back in Europe and America, local and regional products, healthier lives, possible rebirth of transatlantic passenger ships helped by kites, development of work at home via the internet, smaller, easier to maintain homes, with any luck the reduction of CO2 emissions and reduction of light and sound pollution at Night! On the other hand we may just kiss goodbye to tea coffee, chocolate, tropical fruits...better reduce your meat consumption too.
@GeoffreyRahl Yes, one thing overlooked is the transporting of cheap stuff like toys and toilet seats from China. Using bunker fuel on tankers will be too expensive to import so we'll have to make our own junk in the states....
@vChipGivesThemSight We should already have thorium reactors coming on line but we didn't start them 10 years ago, China did and will be having them....
digging the new title sequence :-) ... honestly I don't see many positives other than you have mentioned other than hopefully people will develop more of a understanding for one another. Hopefully we all manage to work it out with one another. maybe its just wishful thinking.
In the book "A Golden Thread" 2500 years of solar architecture and technology, by Ken Butti and John Perlin, you will see what the future will be like after most of the fossil energy supplies are all used up. Look into reading this book, it will amaze you. Very nice intro!
@pgm98387 Thanks for the comment. I'll have to read the book. I don't suppose that book mentioned that an extra 5 billion people are on earth due to our oil dependent food supply? That's the problem with those books, they don't mention that they'll be a few billion less people.
Have you heard the term "Solar Singularity"? How much impact do you think future solar cell technology could have, and would it be in time to limit the impact of Peak Oil? Imagine the impact the combination of advanced solar cells, with advanced water desalination technology. The world could be transformed, deserts turned to farms.
@HarveyEspatchelowe Our world runs on liquid transport fuels and needs economic growth. Solar is a lessor energy source than oil is, that's the problem. It takes oil to manufacture and maintain all the solar systems, that's the other problem...
you mean after WW3 and mass depopulation right....? we'll be liven like natives, well someone will, or.... the good guys will win and we'll have Star Trek!! um...who are the good guys again? I forget....
Those are some good positives that many people don't realize. Of course there are tons of painful negatives and oil wars as we transition away from cheap oil.
