I really like this video in that its message is very clear, rules to work by must be adhered to!
But as Zachry86 said, it would make more sense to maintain Forested areas and log by train.
I really do not understand how logging using a sky lift can make any money? Surely it is just for 'convenience.?
Helicopter logging introduces a substantially higher risk factor of, not just getting hurt, but killed! This surely cannot be a job for a Family man? Just too risky!
don't get me wrong, i'm not a treehugger, i'm not anti-logging, i'm not anti-progress.
but to think that a replanted forest is the same as an old growth forest is... well, stupid.
of course there is a disruption to the wildlife in the area. of course, logging the wrong area at the wrong time could make a species go extinct. of course logging leaves a mark on the area that will not go away for a very very long time (300 yrs? or so)
Don't know about where this is being done but the big logging companies in the USA replant trees after they are done, so what does it hurt. Just like minning, you cannot tell where TUMCO has mined after they are done and reclaim the land. Tree huggers need to get a life.
@sweetypie000 kinda funny did you know there are more trees growing in north America than there was in the 60s... also if you don't support this... stop using paper, stop receiving bills, build a house out of mud... infact just slit your wrist now and finish yourself...
I'm only about to get my commercial ticket, but I would love to heli log someday. I'm not sure if I would want to make a career out of it though. Sitting in the shaded area of the h/v curve all day just seems like asking for trouble....
thats the way to live man. Nothing beat aerial work. logging, bulidnign houses, concrete, firefighting etc etc. beat the crap out of flying HEMS from a-b or offshore for that matter =)
The major companies are backed by big banking...everything is on shares.
In other words, the money is barrowed until the timber is sold .
It is just like any other natural resource... the market does not match the pay-off-
this is where defecites and barrowing more money comes in... in a nutshell, when the margin call comes in, who ever barrowed the money must pay it... but since they have not realy made any money they can't pay... the lender then monopolizes resources
@Zachry86 its faster, the helos dont have to navigate the bumpy hills, they lift a vast quantity of load and take it directly to the landing site. Hook up to the logs lift them off the hill, get to an altittude above the over trees and take it 'As the crow flies' directly to the landing. If you were to count the number of logs that hand been done in a day, loader agains helo, you'd see a vast difference!!!
@Zachry86 Heli-logging allows access to high-quality,high-value old growth timber on otherwise unreachable slopes. As more accessible old-growth timber is exhausted, this less accessible wood becomes so valuable that a well-run heli-logging operation is much more than just break-even. You probably noticed the emphasis on co-ordination in the video - this safely enables the speed required to heli-log profitabley.
on the dropping zone I had a boy killed when a 2500 kg log broke free, enquiry stated was a hook defect, well it did not make my day...
People are always to close especially on dropping zone. Logging is in all phases of flight always very dangerous, look for yourself, dont trust anybody, keep the head up !Thank you for the excellent video,
Wow..That would not be the best place for rotorcraft operation..I hope those helis are in tip top shape because if something decides to fail..Logs and trees become your enemy.
I spent a lot of years heli logging. Worked for Rocky Mountain, Interpack, Erickson, Columbia, CRI, Silverbay. Servived 2 support ship crashes. Man that was some good old days.
That's very impressive. This is a dream job for me...im nearing my pvt. checkride though, so obviously I have an incredibly long time before I get there!
I wrote the script for this video as a contractor for Worksafe. Very gratifying to see how many people it has helped

anyone who supports this ought to be ashamed
the UK for example has 0.01% of it's forests left that it had 200 years ago
shame on you people for destroying the forests and it's creatures that are in it
you are sinning, badly

How can helicopterlogging be profitable?

It is not profitable.

@Zachry86 they are fast moving and can go to very specific places to get specific types of wood
