I had J& R chambers, K&N air filters rejetted and a set of 1970 cylinders and a bit higher gearing and it ran like a scalded dog. Still have it. on July 7th it will be 37 years.WAY COOL BIKE !!
Keep in mind, with THIS engine, adding ANY brand of pipes will KILL the bottom and midrange power and put it all in the top end range.(over 6500rpm's) This engine just loves to detonate severly when the chambers "turn on" whitch requires you to back off the timing and or double stack the head gaskets. This just murders the low and mid power even more!! Leave the stock exh on w/ some mild porting and K&N's ond the bike will be its all around best...
I agree with that statement....several dealers in my area who sold triples back in the day all agree that the bikes ran best for street use on stock pipes!
love that rattle sound brings back memories i used to have allspeeds on mine but i went for the half cut front mudgaurd that were popular back in the 80s bad mistake when it rained the middle cylinder used to cut out.
Expansion pipes offer no performance increase unless they are specifically tailored to the bikes engine. Without the proper porting jetting timing changes etc the chances are high performance will drop.
Rubbish ask any two stroke tuning specialist. Just dropping expansion pipes on a two stroke will nearly always lower performance. The pipes need to be set up properly with the correct back pressure. Yes you can buy specific pipes for specific engines but for any real power boost the engine need tuning. Unless of course you are talking about removing an exhaust system that is designed to limit the power. I know I worked at Terry Becketts two stroke tuning specialists for 10yrs!
That's funny, I spent $300 on a pair of dg's for my 400, went up a size on the mains, moved the needles one clip, put it back on the bike dyno and it punched out another 9 hp.. No porting changes, no airbox mods, no timing changes.. I think you will find that 9 out of 10 stock pipes are quite restrictive and there are such things as noise regulations that manufacturers have to consider.
Exactly you made changes to the carburation. Now if you had it ported you would really see a difference. and pls don't tell me about stock pipes you obviously did'nt read my previous comment. I tuned two strokes for over ten yrs. By the way 9bhp increase on a 400 (25%)with just jetting and pipes is fucking unbelievable be happy.
I wish I could afford those right now. My S3 would love a set. Waiting for the US dollar to strengthen.

Lets not get carried away here,,,,,Spannies look better, they sound better.......that;s a fact.
and on a road bike like this, that's all that ever mattered.
I've owned 18 triples in my time, run them with standard pipes, allspeeds, swarbricks, even a 3 into 1 once, which sounded lovely.
So you might use a bit more fuel for no performance gain, when they look and sound as good as this, who cares?
