  • Part3:

And if you're not in the Oldham area and don't do your food shopping at Selfridges, you'll be pleased to know they have a website and can ship bottles over to you mail order.

    Visit the Mawson's website

  • Part 2: The drinks are made in Oldham - and have been since 1933, where the company has grown from a herbal shop dishing out drinks to deal with a variety of ailments to suppliers of the smart retail set. They're available as "old style" cordial or the slightly more modern fizzy drinks. We've become slightly addicted to them in the warm weather - and can heartily recommend the fizzy Sarsaparilla!

  • i found this: Part1 :

If you've ever browsed round the food and drink section of Selfridges, you may have noticed some soft drinks that look like they've popped up from a corner shop from the 1930s. They're Mawson's drinks - and in suitably vintage flavours - CreamSoda, Dandelion and Burdock and Sarsaparilla, not to mention those vintage bottles.

  • i asked my mum about this drink and she said she thinks u can buy it in health food shops like holland and barrett or something.

  • its spelled sarsaparilla ... spelling bee competition ftw

  • i have never hurd of that drink but i have seen it in westens but i do know that coca cola used to have cocane in it untill they got shut down and stoped putting it into the drinks

but i think it might be root beer looks like it and my grandad says it smells the same

because i saw it in califonia like *Largo64*

    keep rocking and rock onnnn

    =]

  • can some one tell me the song from this video

    w w w . youtube . com /watch?v=WNAG2LJxCaA

  • BeerBongKing (and every other negative-speaking user): I guess every video on YouTube must have a person who insults the poster for absolutely no reason. Why can't users just leave everyone else alone??? More people are disgusted with this kind of thing than there are people who find it funny or agree with it. I know this won't do anything, but you should really stop doing this and pay attention to what Peter's saying; it'll do you good if this is how you handle your lives.

  • Thank you, Peter! You're videos have made me seriously reconsider my life and what I'm doing with it so far. I'm still rather young (15), but I want to be able to do things that I will be able to tell my grandchildren like you have been able to for so long. Keep posting videos, and live long!

  • I am 38 and I remember drinking Sasparella (spelling?) Soda. It almost tasted a little bit like Cream soda to me but it was clear.

  • Whohohoha Gross! Who talks about how droopy their sack has gotten for 8 minutes!?

  • peter, i meant to tell you in the last comment, that i looked up "sasperilla drink" on google for you and there is a link to somewhere who sells the organic recipe for, i dont know if that is helpful to you, but i think root beer is very similar, and nice too!!! keep telling your wonderful stories its nice to hear about days gone by. take care karen

  • hello peter, i love listening to you, i miss my grandpa so much and you remind me of him. your stories are really interesting and you tell them in such a nice way. i think its great you are on you tube good on you!!!!! keep up the good work and take care best wishes karen

  • HI THERE, HOP YOU ARE WELL

  • We know you and love you:) Always love your videos!

  • fuk yh!

  • Hi, I like your videos - don't stop it, hope it will encourage more elderly people to do "uncommon" things.

  • Hello geriatric1927,just saw you on my televison in the news (with the zimmers of course) - in Germany. I was so impressed that I was looking for you. I´ve seen some of your videos - like them! Please carry on, you got a new fan! All the best;D

  • Peter, I don't know if you're aware of this - the more you post to YouTube, the younger you look! :)

  • As usual Peter I love your videos and stories and I am subscribing to your videos on my new YouTube channel. Cheers.

    DJ/VJ Jeff

  • I like you a lot, Peter! Again, this video is very interesting (like your others, too).

  • hi there.... i think you're fab, geriatric1927, and good for you that you're making videos! well done and carry on!

  • oh, and I'd just like to say I hope this helps and I'd like to say I very much enjoyed your part-taking in My Generation and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing you on television. And I hope you continue with broadcasting on the web.

  • Well, hello firstly. My name is Ryan and I'd like to tell you that Sasparilla can be purchased from Fitzpatrick's temperance bar in Rawttenstall, Rossendale, Lancashire. And it has been known to have been suplied elsewhere in confectionary stores accross the uk. However, the key ingriedient 'sasparilla root' from the plant has been removed from both the sweet and the drink. But the manufacturers have tried their best to restore it to it's original taste with substitues.

  • I've seen it sold in California as root beer. I don't know that that is the same thing, though. I'll try to Google it.

  • Geriatric ive seen u on television yesterday doin that the zimmers thing well done

  • You are a STAR Peter, and I don't mean that in the cheapended celebrity sense, but more in the Universal way. You shine, and thousands of people have found your words soothing and inspiring. You seem to have brought the best out in people, I think perhaps making us seem quietly ashamed of our moronic Youtube comments. All The Best Fella, I have deep respect for you, more than I even have for myself...Boo Hoo..hee hee...

  • Probably the reason you (Peter) haven't heard of this drink much is the plant is native to America (and other places that include warm climates), not Britain. The spelling is Sasparilla or Sarsaparilla -- both are the same, as the Wikipedia entry for Sarsaparilla explains. We in America run across it once in a while in places like museum gift shops.

  • I like you alot!

  • "When it rained five days and the skies turned black as night." Bessie Smith Back Water Blues. Should be Katrina's song Dave ligare 3/7/27

  • I get sarsaparilla quite frequently from my nan, in the form of cordial. Baldwin's market it but i'm not sure where you get it from.

  • Sarsaparilla. It's similar to root beer.

  • Scott Wilkinson fixes wrestling matches with the assistance of daven18. These are dark days for the wckcw. The sport needs to be clean and these two need to be dealt with. wckcw is a sham! Face the music of the Maniac!

  • My mom and I love watching your posts. I've never gotten to meet either of my grandfathers and I would love to have one who told me stories like the ones you share.

  • Respect+, your a rocking old man >.<

  • Dad used to trap muskrats and mink and coon and we used to eat them as children. Dad also got lost in the everglades hunting frogs to ship back to Michigan restraunts to sell! Dad also had a story about wrestling "Teddy" the worlds largest wrestling bear! He got 5 dollars for staying in the ring with it for 10 minutes. He was the only one that did not get pinned by the bear and the owner of the bear wanted dad to go on Kieth Vaudville with him.

  • Today is my first day on youtube and you made it all worth while, hang in there.

    Much Respect

  • Sarsparilla drink is still produced in Britain by Fitzpatrick's Herbal Health. So you can still enjoy it today! Supposed to be good for what ails you.

  • la wea, que se fume marihuana y se relaja mas XDDDD

  • I grew up in Northeastern USA and I remember my grandparents talking about sasaparilla. I think they may have been considered it mostly a drink for "adults." Back then they called it "tonic" which was a generic name that they later also gave to all sodas, including Coca Cola. Checking the Internet, I found that sasparilla (a root) is thought to have some medicinal benefits.

  • behave yourself or your foolishnes will be returned seven fold Not so daft

  • I think I have really underestimated the wonders of our time, what youngsters like myself and other people too of course, are experiencing right now. All these new ways of communication for example. It's so nice to hear another point of view. Great video, thankyou!

  • Most enjoyable. Thank you for reminding me to enjoy each moment.

  • sarsaparilla

  • I respect you Sir, what a great inspiration you have given me, keep them coming!!!

  • You are only the second video I have looked at it has inspired me to look at some more. I just discovered YOUTUBE today. what a real joy it is to listen and watch you.

  • You continue to entertain, encourage and mark the time of our lives so delicately. Thanks. And with love may you comtinue.

  • Liked the story. Sometimes the simple things that seem insignificant are the most interestting.

  • Sarsaparilla is an old term not much used anymore for what we now call root beer in the USA. I don't know if ginger beer is the same as root beer over there. I would think your ginger beer is like our gigner ale. Ginger ale is much more pale than root beer. Coca Cola is a syrup invented by a pharmacist (chemist) to mask the awful taste of cocaine, which was legal when Coca Cola was invented. Of course, there's no cocaine in Coke now! lol I hope this wasn't too boring for you.

  • hey nice videos. i saw you on the money programme on BBC2

  • You Rock!!!

  • tell us more about the simple day today differences that you faced as a youth compered to todays kids.

love your slow delivery. very measured. well done!!

  • hey there, just watched u on bbc2, you rock, keep them comin xxxxx

  • You remind me of my dad, good videos, keep it up

  • I take my hat off to you, Sir. With so many viewings in a month, may this be a good sign the younger generation will now show more respect for the elderly. You are wonderful. Thank you.

  • Hey, i dunno if anyone's already posted this but here's the link to the Sarsparella drink you were talking about. Also, the man/company that invented this drink by the looks of things also invented the (still popular) soft drink "Vimto". Hope i helped.

  • You inspired me to make my own blog. It may be this huge hoot of nicotine i just inhaled or not. But me and my girlfriend love your blogs dispite nicotine or not. You got alot of interesting stuff to talk about though. Keep it up :D

  • well said pete

  • ur the sort of guy that inspires me in life i wud love if u did more

  • You should read books out loud and record it, I´d listen to that, you rock old man.

  • Hey, I admire and look up to people like you. I have great respect for you old man. Keep posting the videos!! I love them!

  • keep up the good work

  • Your awesome

  • I like your videos! I haven't gotten all the way through them, so hopefully you'll eventually answer my question - but in case not, why during WWII did they take down all the navigation signs?

  • My dad used to speak of sasparilla. He thought it tasted like Root Beer, and in fact, believe root beer may have the ingredient of which you speak. He came from deep East Texas in the piney woods, and it was a regular drink there. It may be plant derived.

Very enjoyable "prattle". I have not heard the use of the word, "prattle", in quite sometime. I can't spell sasparilla either.

  • Hello Peter,

You might like to try and track down malt beer or root beer in UK shops, our local BoozeBusters sells it. Not the same as sarsparilla, but a nice non-alcoholic drink that I got the taste for whilst living in Germany.

I teach computing almost exclusively to older learners, and I have to say, you are a total star - I wonder if anyone taught you, or if you are self - taught. Well done on using video to upload your thoughts.

    All good wishes,

    A.McC.

  • Peter, what a joy to watch and listen to your videos. THIS is what it's ALL about. Congratulationes, I'm hooked!

  • Some little known and useless facts about...

SARSAPARILLA, is a type of root beer made from sassafras roots. (BIrch beer from birch roots) Not generally, available these days. I recall hearing somewhere in my misspent youth that it was taken off of the market because it was narcotic in VERY large quanitities (Hmmm? maybe that's why those memories are so fond?)

  • I'm pretty darn sure that Coca-cola is an entirely different beast, made from the cola nut. (once upon a time a cocaine was an ingredient) So much for the concept of "SOFT DRINK"

  • I have my own fond memories of my brother's & I foraging sassafras root it the woods and making homemade sassafras tea.

After rediscovering it as an adult I find it helps me sleep on a restless night & I recognized the "anise"y flavors I hadn't been aware of as a child.

  • Both the drink you're referring to and Root Beer are both made using the sassafras root. There is a difference in recipies, though, so they are distinct. Also, I would imagine that Coca-Cola has an altered recipe that they could market & keep secret... Like KFC's chicken batter vs. many southern recipies.

  • I also remember Sasparilla. I only had it once but while my family was traveling by car from Pennsylvania in the US to Arizona, I think it was in Arizona that we were able to get it and it came in a glass pop container like they use to have in the 70's and early 80's. It tasted like rootbeer to me.

  • you are a cool guy

  • Yuk, I hate Sarsparilla. The one I remember my Dad buying as a child in Australia was called Big Sars made by Woodrofes I believe. It looked like Coke but was more syrupy with an aniseedy taste if I recall, bleh! I'm sure they still make it here but I haven't ever bought it.

  • Every August, I attend a ragtime music festival in the former Gold Rush town of Sutter Creek, California. They still sell sasparilla (as it is spelled and pronounced here -- probably altered by the Western accent). I have considered trying it, but haven't yet. It's definitely not the same as root beer, as someone said, for one also can purchase root beer there.

  • I love

that drink well use too don't know if you can get it here anymore

  • wow you are so great you have so many subscribers i hope you live a long life so we can keep watching your videos love ya xxx

  • I recall a western television program called Sugar Foot and he always ordered a sasparilla whenever he was in a bar. It's bubbly and tastes sort of like root beer. Always a pleasure watching your videos.

  • is it me or is this video seriously out of synch?

  • you allowed a racist video response block this user

    >> xacek please

  • <3

  • if you like this guy check out the first ever dave walker show.

  • sorry for the second comment but you should respond to the video Why Do You Tube?

  • Have you any thoughts on foster care and / or orphanages?

  • I love your videos man! please go check out my videos.. I subscribed to you:)

  • Sarsaparilla in its carbonated beverage form is available in the United Kingdom, produced, for over 115 years, by Fitzpatrick's Herbal Health, Britain's "Last original Temperance Bar", noted for being the oldest known producer of the Sarsaparilla drink.

  • Sarsaparilla also comes in a Juice form, also can add water to it, I have brought it at the Old Kent Road Market and now I am living here in the USA. I can buy it here too.

  • Well, there is still a little warmth in the world. How refreshing.

  • Refreshing indeed.

If 1927 is your (geriatric1927's) YOB, then you are about a year younger than my dad. My dad's never plucked a keyboard.

  • You make my day.. I have been watching all of this technology evolve since the "early days".. Quite amazing isn't it?

  • haha, i liked the "yehaw"

  • Wonderful video! Thank you :)

  • sarsaparilla is the forerunner of root beer, which is still a popular drink in america.

  • Oh I love Rootbeer , I am british living in the US at the moment, I think I will miss Rootbeer from here, I am told by my Son you can find it in the UK, but its not the same :( shame..

  • I have not read all the posts. However if you read the terms and conditions, you still retain the copyright to all the original materal that you submit. So there would be no problem hosting/posting your video clips elsewhere.

Looks like you are going well! I haven't had much time lately to watch all your submissions; but I will try and catch up soon! Keep them coming!

    Luke

  • "Sarsaparilla." Google that and you'll find a UK distributer named Mawson's.

  • Very true point of our current status in still but the 'dawn of the internet.'

  • You speak very eloquently and honestly.I believe that you are a good man.I will check on you from time to time!Joseph ..Oh and I believe it's spelled Sassperilla (but I could be wrong)

  • Anything you want to say, i more than welcome it. I love your videos and listening to you. I never really got a chance to talk to my grandfather or listen to his stories, so this is kinda making up for that.

  • aww you are too cute

  • Peter, everything you say is more than worth hearing.

It's worth stopping what you're doing, sitting down, and hearing. Love you. :)

  • Very Swish in your suit. :-)

    Sam.

  • Good evening Europe!

ger.1927 - YouTube it's a web site for a "young people" - in every age! ;) You are the proof of these words! Greetings from Poland!

  • I know that you are our BBC Alistair Cook Letter from America. You have taken the Broad Band by Storm. You are just as interesting to listen to as BBC Alistair Cook was. We love hearing about what happened many generations ago. I can hear the singer sowing machine as opera is sung. What a fine forum you provide

  • Keeping up with the news on you tube great. Nice to listen

  • Thank you for the pleasant diversion. I hope to see you again.

    -chris-

  • Hey there Peter...I am completely new to Youtube. Was looking around and thought really it was just a waste of time and full of absolute rubbish until I came across your videos. Maybe there is more to it than I thought! Cheers... Ps..We still drink Sarsparilla in Australia

  • I thought Sasparilla was more like root beer? I hope Peter can find some.

  • Your a legend Peter, we love you. :D

  • Sarsaparilla :D.

  • Hi Peter, I just watched your video about your being on the BBC show. Personally, I'm glad you decided to be on the program. It seems as though you've inspired thousands of people here to do positive things in there lives. Being on the show means thousands more will be seeing you for the first time. I wish the BBC had the good sense to ask you to do a radio show! I'd listen, and I don't think I'd be the only one tuning in.

  • amazing, awesome, You make me happy man.

  • Hello, Peter. I recently discovered your videos and I think you're delightful. I really respect you and your open mindness and mature attitude. You're a very interesting person and have alot of class. Don't ever let the hatefullness of the few get to you. The vast majority of us are your friends and wish you all the best!

  • I heard that schools in England really did cane kids that were misbehaving? It seems to always be part of any british film from the 1900-1940's era. Can you elaborate on this? Is it a rumor? Did you think it was effective? Just curious.

  • Hello Peter! I remember my parents talking about "sasparilla", which what they drank as oppose to coca cola. I always wondered what it tasted like.

  • Mmmm, sasparilla sounds good! I wish I could try some. :)

  • A Hail Mary for you, thanks Peter.

  • you are a lovely human, plz be well

  • good videos mang!!!

ju should check out de El Cobrado channel

  • you make really great videos. keep it up

  • do you have birch beer there? In the north east US we have Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer it is quite good.

But I dont know any drinks that come in stone jugs. It could be that you were drinking a draft. Real root beer was brewed...today we have that sickening sweet washed out flavorless crap that the corporate monopolies substitute with.

  • Sasparilla is still around. Though now only in glass bottles. I used to walk through the woods and harvest sassafras roots to make sassafras tea. It was a New England favorite.

  • Hello there, you look like Nigel Buxton. That's a good thing though, as he is a fantastic man.

Keep up the videos brother. You rule!

  • I do remember that drink, it is call "zarzaparrilla" in spanish, my grandfather told me about it when I was a kid, I am afraid I've never tasted it but it's sure to be still on the market, may be you can search a bit more....

Greetings from Spain, es muy agradable oirle.

  • We can still get sarsparilla in Aussie a lot of people have a dash of it in their beer. Keep the stories coming

  • Haha i love your stories, i always enjoy watching them.

  • you are so cool! your like my grandpa away from my grandpa who passed away awhile ago! thanks [=

oh! and your story is very interesting. isnt it really weird how much weve advanced in so little time?

  • Hi Peter, I found you site through another page. You were listed as a favorite. I'm glad I stopped by because I enjoyed listening to your stories. Glad to see that you enjoy using this new medium. I have an idea for you. Why not have some of your friends join you once a month to relate stories about your pasts, experiences etc...

  • Peter,

Sassparilla is made from the root of a sassafras tree.

Moonshine is made from distilling corn. My grandmother used to make sassafras tea which is similiar to root beer but not exactly the same.

    Love you videos.

  • i think you own the right to your videos not youtube your just letting them use them try to hangon to your producer

rights like the music people do. just let them use them. that way they can not be misused them in way you may not like.

  • Looking suave Peter!

  • i always thought sasperilla was what root beer called a long time ago.. or at least thats how my mom always explained it to me.

  • Hi Peter, its not a problem to put the same videos on both sites because you own the content and just give the right to both sites to use it. I even put up a video saying "hi youtubers" over there but then put up some text on top changing it to livevideo :)

  • Sasparilla or sarsaparilla, they're both rather similar. If you've had what is called "root beer" in the United States, that's it. I've heard the rest of the world finds root beer disgusting, but you never seem to hear sasparilla getting a bad rap.

  • You're awesome, Peter. Keep them coming.

  • Sasparilla is still sold out here. (Western US) I like it. Maybe we ought to ship you some!
