  • Very enjoyable thank you

  • love the video really good

  • great video thanks

  • Very enjoyable thank you

  • good work here

  • Completely agree. Next step...eradication of advertising. It's a real sin to create a desire where there wasn't one before.

  • As an active designer and degreed engineer, I found this very stimulating and not at all blah-blah-blah. I believe this is an important movement--perhaps as important as the movement towards user experience designing. I hope those who watch this realize these aren't buzz words, but specific thought process methodologies as important and defined as "the scientific method".

  • this guy knows the secret to talking about absolutely nothing but fooling everyone hearing to thinking that it's something.

  • wtf is this guy talking about?

blah blah blah mr. fancy words

  • Design Thinking is truly phenomenal.

  • @dontOVERREACT would u back up to check a fly you ran over?

  • sky is blue

  • not quite a smart idea comparing electric water boiler and a railway. not all design can be shoved into the same sack, especially not in this way.. maybe i misunderstood, though.

  • i think its strange that he's comparing an engineer with a modern industrial/graphic designer...

  • yes, he is comparing things that cant be compared in that way.

  • the point is not how much u can think ....The point is how small u can think....whether u r a graphic or any hack of a designer...

  • how much modern u want to be btw ????

  • It's not about design ...may it's abt reDesign..!!!!

  • comparing big objects with thinking big is a bit too naive. maybe it meant those objects that we see/use/buy daily, but even those that are "a tool of consumerism" are still needed, quite desirable and important. there was e.g. a pen and sunglasses on the slide - not important? maybe not the matter of life and death, but certainly very important, when it comes to human centered design. could be just a bad choice for the slide..

  • @zebrumera

    boards.core77.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20894&start=45

  • when it comes to the water-problem: SEVERAL designers have already designed SEVERAL objects that allow people to drink straightly from the filthy water and it filters everything and there is clean water coming out of it IMMEDIATELY.

The big question is not: how do we do this?

The big question is: WHY HASNT ANYONE INTRODUCED THESE OBJECTS TO THE PEOPLE AND HELP ORGANISATIONS?!

  • yeah!!! save the world!!!

can it be bigger than that? :P

  • You know sometimes I think way too big, and too hard to me to accomplish my goal...

  • me too lol

  • damn, that sounds familiar...

  • The way I see it, the main key thought is for everyone to engage their minds in the process of producing ideas instead of leaving it to the "market". This is not socialism, it is about participation: developing a passion for ideas, of being creative, of not being bored and TV channel surfing to cover it up.

When I lived in New Town, in Sydney, Australia in the late 70s, there was a piece of graffiti on the wall down our street: "Consume, be silent, and die".

Do we want this as our epitaph?

  • Great comment, nims60! Ít actually inspired me

    :-)

    thinking creatively is VERY important

  • yeah ...very well said.!!!

  • @nims60 All you can change is the 'be silent' part. SHOUT! If it makes you happy

  • @crudhousefull I can change the consume part as well...at the moment I am on a mission to reskill myself in some old style skills. Current interests: bread making, building lime and sand walls, cooking almost everything I eat, and growing a lot of it as well. Oh, and investigating the health aspects of food we eat. I find myself very critical of food nowadays when I eat out, which annoys my husband no end!

  • @nims60 Great move. Became a vegetarian a couple of months ago myself. Less consumption is a LOT of work and a LOT of self control. Better if less consumption was there from the beginning

  • A man thinks too big and he'll end up with a corporate dick up his ass and a new "best buddy".

  • you've learnt your lesson then.. Just use that vaselin.

  • I have a friend named tim brown. He likes to play gears a lot.

  • good topic. important topic.

but damn. this guy has issues communicating his ideas.

that was one boring and messy talk

  • Interesting stuff as always from The Onion.

  • I not trying to rag on this guy but all the stuff he talked about that was successful sounded like engineering, invention, and management. Is that what this guy is saying design is because it looked like what he did was take existing technology and make it more user friendly, and apparently, he didn't do very well.

  • im studying design right now, this is pretty much standard 1st year teachings for todays designers, dont know why they need him to stand on a stage and expound this stuff.

  • @burningeko please refer to tedify.com

  • Buzz-wording and changing of subjects dont make him sound more credible. Its nothing wrong what he is talking about, its just have nothing to do with "industrial" or "graphic" design.

  • To sum up this presentation: If you own a company, do not hire Tim Brown. He will drive your company into the ground by designing products for it that will be defunct in a matter of months.

  • Slow learners whining about past greats with good ideas not getting their way...

    Fing old hat.

Enlightenment is not the answer, if the small-minded people with a good life and a big purse has no drive.

It's about the guy with the vision having f all means of making it happen. Hiring 2000 guys with vision won't make it happen without the drive.

Some speech won't make anyone make it happen. Getting rich yourself and doing it will. Good luck for any moneygrabber to develop talent.

  • Isn't there anyone interesting TED can invite to do a speech next? or does the world only have such a small handful of people

  • I've been to their site and you can request or suggest speakers. I asked for Bill Mollison / Sepp Holtzer / Geoff LAwton and so on...

    know who they are?

  • no...

  • No, you just think that when you say something, everyone will understand. And there you make a huge mistake. Although the content might be right, not all will understand.

  • Talks by architects and designers tend to be boring and not going anywhere.

    Better skip this one!

  • I posted my CBDQ "How can we meet world energy requirements while also maintaining an equilibrium in climate?

That I feel is the real challenge, although I should include ecosystems in the balance.

That being the thought for centuries to come. (if we have that much time to think... that is)

  • why does almost everybody who speaks at TED throw in Global Warming? Haven't they heard?

  • About the bird? Everybody knows that the bird is the word!

  • Dont you know about the bird!?

  • isn't it the word

  • Maybe because it's our main environmental priority :b

  • he's also praising social state........ no wonder why companies he worked for went out of business.

Don't deny the enlightened word of Al Gore!

If you aren't a believer keep quiet and be ashamed!

  • haha

  • please forgive me for seeking out better, more up to date, third-party, non-biased information.

    All praise Allah Gore! ;)

For all of you "thumbs down" types. Look up a CBC documentary called "Global Warming - Doomsday called off" and many related videos. CO2 levels follow climate change, not the reverse.

  • or just type in "judge Al Gore" in any search engine and see results - judgement on his powerpoint presentation.

Personally I like The Great Global Warming Swindle from BBC - it's packed with scientific data and it's not a powerpoint presentation ;-)

  • actually, yeah, saw that one too but forgot. better title, too, eh?

  • yea, and those socialists hate it very much :-)

Because it hits (shows the truth) their believes, so it's personal.

  • Comment removed

  • from CH4 - i thought it's BBC... maybe not ;-)

  • @funnyguise You sir are a stereotype.

  • Our education system doesn't cater to this approach. In America, if you go into "design", you're given a free pass on math, science, chemistry, and algorithmic programming because, well, "design is just fashion and art". And if you go into engineering you get a pass on art theory & communications because, well, engineering is just putting components together so they work. Not many people are talented enough to possess both design & engineering skills, which makes this approach rare & valuable.

  • 4:55 Is a crumpled up suit that looks like it has been slept in part of the image and fashion that he is a fully paid up member of?

  • I think he's talking more so about engineering, because design is exactly what it is, design, style, which is why designers always come up with more than one variations of certain products. Engineering is where revolutionary things happen. Though a designer can be an engineer and vice-versa

  • I don't get the point of his presentation. Is it about designing or engineering? Engineers do some designing and designers do some light engineering... but .. What's the point?

  • science is art. engineering is design.

  • ha engineering is a special kind of society to need a big talk to get around to saying the idea 'be open to ideas and have a multifaceted life to stimulate your thinking'

  • This didn't make much sense. Did he expect his first employer to hire him to solve world thirst, rather than designing the housing for a table saw? Did he think Brunel's first design job was the Great Western?

  • Many talks will continue to remind man kind to get of his but and think outside the box - leap over the bounds of what has been and seek out something new... this is simply another one - - we will hear these from time to time until we start

    TO DO IT... hmmmmm?

  • Must start with asking the right questions to the right ears in the right climate.

  • YES, weve traded quality for marketability

people are getting what they want and not what they need

  • we now know what we do not want. we now have to remember how to remember what we do, what feels right, where is passion, compassion fun. feelings must be honored . can we access our feelings ?

  • He didn't say anything that's new. Same old, same old. weak talk.

  • I think he's subtly implying to not procrastinate during present-day activities. When he says "instead of thinking about what to build, build in order to think." For example, every social networking website always updates the content of their site for the convenience of the people by adding on whats needed and taking away whats not. HOWEVER, these websites wouldnt be able to THINK about whats needed for the consumers had they not already constructed a site to begin with, right?

  • More practical design is needed today. That is what I get from this talk. Instead of designing something that appeals to the designer, design needs to start with the true needs of the people and then expanded so that it benefits the many.

  • There's Tim Brown! I guess he got bored of being an old lady

  • i think, what he is meaning to say, is that, when we designers design, we design thinking of tmr tmr tmr tmr tmr, and future, not just what is relevant today, but to create solutions for tomorrow. its true what he say, that design has lost its integrity, designers should be more than designers, they should be designtists too..

  • He's not talking about 'design', he's talking about 'pragmatism'.

  • If you don't like this TED talk, you don't know what usability is.

  • Rounded simplistic design is always the best

  • yea not the best one. Some of the talks are amazing thou

  • yea this one is not that interesting. Some of them are amazing

  • k guys, this video has nothing to do with HD, maybe comment on the significance of his argument, and not some non sequitur...

Personally I think what he has to say is great! Starting with what people actually need/want, and asking the target market all the way through for input and feedback. You'll create all kinds of synergistic ideas as a involved group that you'd never think of by yourself or in a small team of "designer priests."

  • Mr. Brown - the first question for you is: how do you expect to maintain your rich, high-profile lifestyle designing water systems for the world's poor?

  • The fact that he does innovative things like that for the poor DOES help is 'high-profile'. He might not get paid much for helping the poor, but the next gig he gets will pay him tons because of the things hes accomplished.

  • Quit bitching about something that is free.

  • Come on TED, we need HD.

  • why you want HD? What is wrong with it currently? I never understood why people say that, the images in the video seem perfect

  • Some of us is watching this on a 52inch LCD tv with full HD resolution. In that case this video is just a small ractangle on the screen. And choosing fullscreen gives really bad picture.

  • aha, that is a good point actually. on my little 15'' laptop it fills the screen on full screen mode and is as clear as the tv.

have you not got a spare screen slot? maybe you could plug in some crappy old smaller monitor and have two until HQ becomes more standard.

  • What is wrong with it currently? It's not HD.

  • i agree, HD was advertised as something that would have more impact than color tv had. i think its just a stepping stone, a step between regular quality and whatever we finally end up with.

mark my words, in 4 or 5 years time they will be advertising new and improved HD v2.0 or something.

  • Nah. It's the last step BIG step up in resolution.

The future innovations will be better color management, better contrast and offcourse, 3D.

  • well i dunno about that. while there is a physical possibility for improvement i will keep expecting it.

it will probably end up at some insane point where each pixel is so small that it can only produce one photon at a time or something.

if nothing better comes out in the next 5 years ill probably get on the HD gravy train. but for now, i think its just a new ploy to get us to spend 3k on a new tv each few years.

  • Better than that sappy chick I got tricked into watching.

  • Prefer the 'Dream Big'

  • Love TED
