  • Imagine whistling this...

  • Kenneth J. Alford

  • This is a British march...108 no faster.

  • Way too fast. English marches are mostly much slower!

  • And by the way, it really does sound rushed. If you want an idea of the authentic speed, check out the older recording which is on YouTube. "Colonel Bogey March" by classicalmusicfan 100.

  • Since it was written by an Englishman (Ricketts, pen name Alford) you should CHANGE the title of this. Better if you said, "... by Ricketts / Alford, arr. John Phillip Sousa." It makes a difference.

  • first of all this should be played at 120 beat to the minute. this is at least 160. Secind and more important this was written by Kenneth Alford NOT Sousa. this is an insult to British military music which is the best in the world

I'm x Regimental Band 2 Royal Tank Regiment

  • This has clearly been sped up electronically, check the pitch

  • @kev151011 um no, this is classified as a circus march and is played in cut time

  • @AZPrimeProductions I beg to difer, I have played this march 1000 times in this original arrangement as played on this clip. The march is in 2/4 time. (Ex Scots Guard Band)

  • played this once in middle school...no where near as fast...

  • This music isn't composed by ph.sousa: But Alford!!!

  • too fast ?

  • @kenumakaba yes it is. it should be at 120 i believe, yet they're playing around 130 or so

  • This is not an arrangement. Just garbage.

  • march?, or music to run by?

  • Sounds like the band was trying to beat a incoming thunder storm.

  • Horrible.............way, way too fast, and what does it have to do with Sousa?

  • 1] This is an arrangement by Sousa (thats why his name is in the title)

    2] The tempo is awesome!

  • @davidthmovies It was NOT written by Sousa. The guy who posted these videos credits Sousa with everything, and hasn't bothered changing it.

  • was not written by souza

was written by british march writer alford

    tempo is way too fast

its supposed to be a march not a run

  • TOO FAST !

  • Marching cadence is 120 steps per minute. A march is supposed to be the same. Our high school band director harped on that constantly.

  • @t1pnr1ng

quick step cadence is 120 spm

    military cadence is 100 stm

  • Terrible version. First, it's by Kenneth Alford, and second, whoever conducted this took it MUCH too fast. This is a British march, and intended to be played at about 110.

  • hitler has only got one ball.....

  • thats good!!

  • Woops, need to turn this LP down to 45 rpm bud. And this is RIcketts not Sousa. But the band sounds good.

  • Yeah, it doesn't sound much like Sousa.

  • Apart from being to fast, the composer is mis-named. It was written by Kenneth J. Alford, which a pseudonym for Major Rickets. Great playing though!

  • Too fast ! Not too many people like the song play this way.

  • my 8th grade band sort of failed at this piece XD

  • Yep, I agree the tempo is to fast for this march. It would be great for The Melody Shop or Barnum and Bailey's Favorite, but not Colonel Bogey

  • bah bloody yanks again

  • breakfast club?

  • Tempo is horribbly. sjasket march

  • Very funny @ 1011mn !

  • Way too fast. Imagine making love at this speed!

  • @JimBozeman1956 I couldn't; my hand would give out.

  • Why is everyone complaining about the speed of this march? Haven't you seen those old-timey, black and white films from years ago when they were marching?

This is what they were listening to!

  • OMG its fast try marching to that

  • This is not a American march at all, and not written by Sousa. it is written by Frederick Ricketts. It also it played to fast. It's more like a galop this way!

  • Definately Alford. Could you please play it on 33 1/3 r.p.m.?

  • Kenneth Alford. Not Ricketts, not Sousa. And I agree....TOO DAMN FAST!

  • @annepfeil08 Frederick Ricketts is Kenneth Alford! Kenneth Alford is his pen name and his younger brother Randolph Ricketts also had a pen name Leo R. Stanley he also composed some great marches.

  • Ricketts published "Colonel Bogey" and his other compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford. And please, no more comments on tempo. Here it is being performed as a concert march which is geneally a quicker tempo to keep the audience attention. On the street or field it would obviously be played at a slower tempo!

  • Iit is to my understanding that this march was originally German! is that true?

  • @Doug48794 No, it is an English march although it is very popular in many other parts of the world as well. However there was a satire song during WWII, Hiltler has only One Ball ,set to the tune.

  • peacocks, where marching down the field!

  • *starts raining on parade* "Band major, We need to move fast!!" *Band starts playing this*

  • @luqmanhakimMLHBB haha wow that would be me and the band im commanding in JROTC lol

  • @USMCoohrah97 Im Singaporean [Asian, but NOT CHINESE] apperently, so whats JROTC 0_0

  • @luqmanhakimMLHBB Junior Reserve Officer Training corps. (pretty much a military school)

  • No, we Americans think this is WAY too fast. This is the only version I've heard played at this tempo...this is almost painful to hear.

  • I agree too fast, horable!

  • Pure bull shit.....even if it is a circus band!

  • Yes America has taken many things form European culture, good music however is something rather lacking.

  • I will admit this---this arrangement does kind of grow on you after awhile...

  • This is downright laughable. Previous comments say it all, but damn. I'm cracking up.

  • This is way way way too fast!! Slow it down, or don't even play it on here...

  • This cadence was supposed to represent the cadence of a horse at a trot.

  • @heavymov5r Horse at a trot? This is the cadence of a horse running for its life with a cheetah chasing it.

  • Just because its a little fast does not mean its not still nice to listen to. Also, Not all Americans rush WAY too much, its just a steryotype about America's patriotic bands from other countries and you joined in on it. And how is it insultive to British marchers everywhere? I see nothing insultive about it.

  • This sounds like a 33rpm record played at 45rpm. I can't believe that any decent conductor would EVER play this great march at this ridiculous tempo.

  • I checked my metronome, and they are doing 190 in a 115.

  • I have to do this on French horn -.-

  • This is not an American March....

  • You would Kill the marchers if you played this

  • JP Sousa? You're an idiot. If it WAS a Sousa "arrangement", it should be noted as "BY Ricketts arr. Sousa."

As for some of the other stupid British comments, many marches are played "uptempo" in concert, going back to there use as circus band "Screamers". Learn some history indeed.

  • Yes, Sousa did not write this song. I believe however he wrote this arragement of it. Yes, believe it or not, people do write different versions of songs. Therefore, this version was written by Sousa. Get that through your heads people, we all know it's a British song.

  • Fucking Americans. Sorry, that was harsh, but dammit, do you really need to try to claim every fucking thing under the sun as yours and then ruin them in some way (in this case the tempo).

  • @Lacivicus Yes, because one random person claiming something was by Sousa clearly should be blamed on that person's country as a whole.

My fucking god the hatred for Americans in the modern world is staggering.

  • @connorross123 It's their own fault for being hated so much.

  • dude like 6 videos you have posted were actually by sousa, the rest are not

  • One of my all time favorite movies is "Stars and Stripes Forever" starring Clifton Webb as John Phillip Sousa. A little hollywooded up but still a great movie about a great American.

  • JOHN PHILLIP SOUSA, ONE OF THE GREATEST AMERICANS OF ALL TIME DID NOT WRITE THIS SONG.......

  • Seems like Sousa is getting credit for a whole bunch of stuff he never wrote. He didn't write this, nor 76 Trombones, nor even Under the Double Eagle. About time somebody bothered to learn some history.

And, for the record, this is being played way too fast. It's a March, not a Vivace!

  • For those upset by the tempo, it seems to me to be less than 180bpm (in cut time), so please don't exaggerate. It does sound fast, and is certainly over tempo for a British march, but it's certainly not 200 or 300+ that some have suggested.

  • kind of funny

  • NOT by Suza for sure - it is a British military music. Get your facts right.

  • Neither Colonel Bogey NOR Seventy-Six Trombones was written by Sousa..the latter was written for the musical: The Music Man by a man from Mason City, IA who's name escapes me. Hey give me a break!!! I am 62 and it has been 41 years since we performed this in college!

  • Das Tempo ist zu schnell.

  • @Babouci that means the tempo is too fast :)

  • Please do some research before you upload to U-Tube.

This is NOT a Sousa March and NOT American.

    AND the performance is terrible.

  • @barrhavener Goddammit, you need to shut up too. This is obviously NOt a Sousa march! Anyone who is not 5 (which is 90% of the population of youtube) would know that! Just because the tempo is faster does not mean that its not still good to listen to! Its not a bad song or a bad tempo.

  • @TaCtIcSfTw1

What do you Americans know about good music?. I still think that the performance is terrible.

Any European orchestras perform far better than this.

Actually, Sousa Marches are terrible. Stars and Stripes forever not. Washington Post is ridiculous. You want good marches? Try Under the Double Eagles or Radetzky March from Europe.

  • @barrhavener Someone's mad Europe isn't relevant anymore.

  • @barrhavener Meh you're just mad that Europe hasn't been putting out music that gets international recognition much. Cheer up, emo European kid :)

  • @sasukesgirl4life

Sorry I am NOT European, nor American. I dont really care if European or American music gets international recognition or comdemnation or not.

I judge each artist or piece of music, from Elvis Presley to Beatles to Andre Rieu, indvidually according to their artistic performance or entertainment value, not by their nationality. Therefore, even James Bond theme songs ---- some are really good, some are very bad.

I vote each artist with my pocket.

  • @barrhavener You can keep telling yourself that. Truth is, everyone is bais based on country to some degree.

  • @barrhavener I'd like you to ask that to a few people instead of giving me your narrow-minded opinion. And how would you like it if I called the entire British (or, actually, British are better than how you are acting right now.)or whatever nationality you are stupid because I don't like something you're posting on youtube and I hate it as one person out of a few million in a nation?

  • @TaCtIcSfTw1

I live in a free and democratic country where I am entitled to my own opinion on whatever subject I comment on. If you dont like what I say, then get the hell out of here and work for the Internet Police in China behind their Great Fire Wall. There you can enjoy arresting other people for their opinion. Obviously U-Tube is NOT THE PLACE for you.

  • @barrhavener And I live in a free, democratic country where some people enjoy happy enjoyable lives without people like you messing it up for them. Obviously Youtube is NOT the place for somebody like YOU.

  • @TaCtIcSfTw1

How democratic is that when everyone has to follow you and expresses the same viewpoint that "XYZ" is good? You sound like someone from a dictatorial country where every body lives "harmonously" and "happily" with no opposing ideas. Go somewhere else like North Korea, China or Saudi Arabia where different opinions are not tolerated.

  • @barrhavener When did I say that everyone has to follow me and express my same viewpoint? Now you're just making things up! I was asking for a FEW peoples opinion! Obviously, if I was a communist faggot, I wouldn't have wanted their opinion having feared them having a different opinion so I would have to start a fight with them! You don't seem to understand the viewpoint that I'm trying to show to you.

  • @TaCtIcSfTw1

When? It is when you tell me to shut up about a month ago right here in your post ---- it is still here.

By the way, I am just curious. I am an Elvis fan. If I say, "I love Elvis Presley", will you tell me to shut up too?

  • @barrhavener So, now, you're just guessing that because I tell you to shut up because of a heinous comment that YOU posted in the first place, you think that I hate everything that you love? Typical inbred child.

  • @barrhavener Besides, ""What do you Americans know about good music? I still think that the performance is terrible. Any European orchestras perform far better than this." seems like a call to try and get someone to bash on YOU so that you can bash on them! The last sentence clearly states that you think everyone should think your way, considering that you don't say "In my opinion" or "I think". All you say is every European orchestra is much better than an American band/orchestra.

  • @TaCtIcSfTw1

Can you read English at all? My original post clearly said, "I think that the performance......." And I did not tell anybody to shut up. Fortunately, this is just about a old piece of music which is not harmful to anybody. If I express opinion on American Presidents, you probably would be so angry that you would be throwing a shoe at your monitor (or i-Pad)? Sound like you Americans only use "human rights" to your advantage.

  • This is way too fast -__-

  • Who did this arrangement, Dragonforce? WAY too fast!

  • @SimuLord lol

  • @SimuLord JHAHAHAHAHHAHA, you are the best!

  • @SimuLord HA!

  • 1] Frederick Ricketts, not Sousa. Just because he's the "march king" doesn't mean he wrote every single march in existence.

2] Tempo is horribly off. It's supposed to be around 115-120, and what did you do? 200ish?

3] Insultive to British marchers everywhere.

4] Americans always rush WAY too much. Just putting that out there.

  • @Sinooffire Just because its a little fast does not mean its still nice to listen to. Also, Not all Americans rush WAY too much, its just a steryotype about America's patriotic bands from other countries and you joined in on it.

  • @TaCtIcSfTw1

Stereotype or not, it's quite obvious that it's applied correctly here for a piece completely ruined because of it.

  • @Sinooffire

    1. Yes, Sousa gets ;ots of credit, even in the UK where he is routinely named as composer of The Monty Python March. 4. Tempos are accelerating right across the spectrum of entertainments. It's a result of an ever shorter attention span. Cinema is the most dramatic example.Compare any movie of the 1930s with one of the same genre from the 1960s, and then one from the current crop. Modern audiences have no patience for old films. A film today that doesn't keep up the pace will flop.

  • @Sinooffire: "Americans always rush..." Isn't that a harsh generalization? That's like saying "Brits are all stuffy assholes." I certainly don't believe that. Nor do I believe "Americans always rush..."

  • @Sinooffire I dont mind the Americans but they need to think before the act.

  • @Sinooffire You're right. NOBODY marches that fast, not even Americans. This is a terrible rendition of the great British march.

  • @Sinooffire This isn't British, this is a German march.

  • @sean890z

The Colonel Bogey March was written in 1914 by F. J. Ricketts. Ricketts was a British army bandmaster. There is absolutely no possible way that you could seriously think that this march is German.

  • @Sinooffire Jokes on you Sousa did an arrangement of Colonel Bogey, which my high school Symphonic band played, and this was the arrangement we played sooo meh.

PS Hate to tell its not that the piece was rushed, what it most likely is, is that he didn't want it to be taken down by copyright bullshit so he speed it up with a program and put it on YouTube.

  • @GuitarCoversLessons

I said that he didn't WRITE it, not that he hasn't done an arrangement of it. Learn to read.

  • @Sinooffire Maybe so but this particular arrangement we are listening to is by Sousa. I'm sure Ricketts did write this but just because he wrote it doesn't mean we are listening to that exact piece.

  • @GuitarCoversLessons

The way he made the title is how the piece's writer is formally identified. If he simply didn't realize this, he's being fairly misleading >.> Arrangers should be placed either afterwards or in the description and titled as such.

  • Wtf? This is definitely a british march, taken at an American tempo.

  • @vaiol123 No, not American tempo, but Light Infantry and Rifles tempo of 160 paces per minute!

  • @PrivateEccles Thank you for the clarification :D

  • Dude, quit friggin calling every march you post on here a sousa march! freakin research what you put on here before you post.

  • Alford, a Royal Marine Music Director wrote this and many other great marches , not as many as Sousa BUT in MHO much better.

  • Kenneth Alford a Royal marine music director wroye this and several other great marches, not as many as Sousa BUT in my MHO much better matches

  • Sousa could only dream of cpmposing this.

  • This song probably made those Japanese piss their pants.

  • Not Sousa. Not even American. Where's the damn fire?

  • American? Clearly bollocks, it's a British march!!

  • bad trouble for the band trying to keep in step

  • Hitler has only got one ball,

Göring has two but very small,

    Himmler is somewhat sim'lar,

But poor Goebbels has no balls at all!

    Come sing with me!

  • @Stormcat1 Rofl! Epic lyrics!

  • @kldudmp Don't thank me! Thank the british people of World war two who had to endure their cities being bombed and needed some dirty humor to cheer them up!

  • too fast should be half the speed, and it's not by Sousa!

  • Hey, that's not Sousa! WTF? It's British.

  • "Hitler, has only got one ball..."

  • Mate the fuck its not American its British you dosy twat

  • My guess is that this is an LP being played at 45 RPM.

  • We mine as well just call it Colonel Benny Hill March. God!

  • much better slowed down , this is crap

  • Too fast and the wrong composer. They do quite well for rushing it though.

  • This was not composed by John Phillip Sousa!

It was written in 1914 by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts (1881–1945), a British military bandmaster who was director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since at that time service personnel were not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, Ricketts published "Colonel Bogey" and his other compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford.

However, Sousas music is absolutely great and he is a hero of mine for marches :-)

  • Ha ha, "Sousa" must have been on speed when he wrote this. ;-D

  • Abso-bl**dy-lutely!!

  • This march was written under the name of Kenneth Alford, to be played at 120 paces to the minute.

    Disgraceful plagerism

  • THIS is how military music should be played! Not too fast, and not too slow. Then again, this is more a comic song than a military march:

"Hitler has only got one ball! The other is in the Albert/Leeds Town/Free Trade hall! His mother, the dirty bugger, chopped it off when he was small. It flew into an apple tree, landed in the deep blue sea. The fishes got out their dishes, and had scallops and bollocks for tea."

  • The correct tempo for a British Quick March is, I believe, 116 BPM, this must be getting on for 300BPM

  • TOO GODDAMN FAST!

  • Ridiculously fast!! This is totally unmusical!!!

  • This has to be a joke of some kind. No serious band would ever go dashing through this march in such a manner.

  • WHOOW THIS IS PLAYED VEEEEEERYYYYYY FARST !!!

  • Sounds like they put a 33 record on 45 rpm

  • This guy has posted a bunch of things he has attributed to John Philip Sousa. Apparently he thinks if it's a march of any type, Sousa wrote it, because, so far, none of them have anything to do with Sousa. This one sure doesn't.

  • Composed by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. I'm American and love Sousa but lets get honest about it! Give the Brits their credit. It's not all about us!

  • So recepie is take 2 red bulls, followed by a shot of esspreso and can of Coca Cola, the faster you play it the faster you can go to the bar!!! OMG, this is insulting tempo

  • Think there's a bit of irony in here folks.

Sousa's marches were considerably faster than most others. And there's more than a few who think that it's an american march.

  • Good heavens... marches are at a 2/4 beat set a tempo THAT IS AS FAST AS YOU MARCH! you'd look like a bad time lapse video marching to this!

  • @cwpaul11

The mental imagery of marching in time with this is absolutely hilarious!

  • Music on steroids!!!

  • too fast, not written by sousa, you just ruined a perfectly good piece of military music you silly man, please look up military fairy, seems like your like it

  • You got to be kidding me... zzahier... you can not attribute this to Sousa... this is not even close to being by Sousa! Just be honest when posting dude!

  • Love it. I play nitendo ds and i have nitendogs and they enjoy to march in a circle to this song. it is so catchy

  • This is so bad that its actually funny.

  • Obviously the band are on red bull or sugar drinks

  • @barker505 So that's why I drag whenever I play it.

  • Wow. Not only is this not Sousa, it's not even American. Give proper credit, please.

  • Not American at all, this is a British Military march by Kenneth Alford

  • wow. this is a little fast... just a little.

  • Didnt kenneth alford a.k.a. F.J. Ricketts write this

  • Sousa did not write this.

It was written by F J Ricketts.

Sousa wrote so many fantastic marches he doesnt need to piggy back on others work. Please ammend the title.

  • Gross. Why so friggin fast?!

  • this isnt american

  • this wasnt Sousa

  • Εχεις τιποτα με τον Sousa εσυ;;τι τρεχει με σενα;
