@Tota90kid Both, the quadriceps and hamstrings counteract most of the force created from gravity when the body is moved up and down while running and the calves mechanically work with the hamstring and quadriceps to propel the body forward. The process of one stride is like a spring and there's two legs so that one leg can have contact on the ground maintaining its potential energy and the other leg can release its potential energy + with inertia so the other leg can move forward.
