Yeah Freddie's not totally happy here (probably the way he's hearing it - since he checks another mic') and that probably takes an edge off what he does (but still GREAT). Then we get an example of over blowing some good riffs but the music is not really happening.
you guys talk as if you know something about music.........do you have any idea how f%^&*ing loud it is on stage??? if there werent enough percussionists on stage there's even tympani!!!!! freddie's obviously not happy with his stage sound...he tries changing mikes...then he's eating the mic... man he's working with what he's got.... this was his last great year of playing...and I for one am very glad to see this video........oh yeah Terumasa is ON!!!!!!! god bless,Freddie
freddie hubbard killed it but i wish everybody else at least listened to what he was doin. and this would be aight if they actually played with some musicality
I know my comment is inappropriate, but towards the end of Hinos solo, when he starts to heat things up... the drummer looks like he is having an orgasm.
Lot of trumpets, but ole' Gonzalo is sure burnin' it up. As a great drummer friend of mine once put it, Rubalcaba should have an "S" on his chest and a cape.
please send my a link with a Chinese jazz musician playing laid back all the time! I have never seen one before.. They can be amazing animals playing classical music but most of them do not feel jazz..
uuhh... first off all these people are Japaneese.. sorry big difference i dont know if u know ur geography but there are more other Asian contries other than China... and the guy playing on stage terumasa hino is japaneese, and u wanna hear amazing.........go listen to ERIC MYASHIRO.......the closest thing to maynard ferguson other than bill chase..... any other dumb ass remarks you wanna make about ur amature knowledge on trumpet players??????
sorry thats ERIC MIYASHIRO....swear to god the closest thing to a life MF concert you could see today... but Arturo Sandoval still slightly has the upper hand in jazz improve and range... although hes gettin older and older... hes knowledgfully getting stronger and stronger everyday on music theory and notation which makes him one of the best improvisers alive... not to mention the dozens of other standard names u know...
I have to comment because Freddie is one of the top five all-time great trumpeters and if the date is correct this may be one of last consistent solos. Perhaps even some of the blowing that contributed to his injury in the fall of 92'. This solo has some great lines. I think he's just a little 'stoned'. Not the end of the world. BTW, who's Termusa Hino? Don't know if you noticed a young Josh Redman plugging his ears because it's too loud and Billy Higgins on timpani.
In the 80's (can't remember year) Freddie Hubbard badly injured his chops on a tour and continued to play with a badly split lip. It got so infected that they had to SURGICALLY REMOVE part of his lip. Ever since then Freddie was never the same. Also, in the 80's he got more into "Hanging out" (sniff sniff) than playing jazz all day. A legend, my favorite trumpet player, but his hayday was the 60's. Man was he amazing on all those records. But, at least he didn't die at 26 like Clifford Brown!
Why is everyone hating on Freddie??? This may not be his best performance, but I would like to hear one of you guys play better then Freddie! Try it, I dare you.... wait you cant! Not every single piece of music or solo by Freddie has to be golden, he had years and years of awesome performances, just because one improvised solo wasnt completely awesome doesnt mean that it was a sad performance! Stop hating!
Dear me ... multiple trumpets up front almost never works ... and it sure didn't work here. Hub never gets his groove on ( and nearly wanders into screech hell , but thankfully not ). Hino seems possessed to outplay Hub, not play music. Crappy Lee imitation. As for the ensemble, horrible intonation and lousy attacks all around. When Gonzalo takes over it's like a Rolaids.
@jsteuernol Freddie's chops are definitely shot at that time and it's all down hill from there, sad to say. Thank God we got plenty of him at his best.
Sounds like crap. Ive heard Hubbard play better than this (live too!), Terumasa Hino is a weak lead player if thats what he trying to pull off. Blaring trumpets
or the French =P really, we invented it, so whatever, i guess we started to like Rock and later Rap too much... I guess its the nature of art to keep on moving...
Lol. Its all on the people and who you present it to, the japanese are heavily culturally influenced by us. We have a huge amount of cultural division, some people would brather listen to some crap rap or blue-grass.
this sounds like a middle school. I know they can all do much better on their own (at least Hubbard sure as hell can) but this just sounds poor for professionals.
this is a horribly done piece, the intonation is all over the place. + I just dont like the feel- needs more garlic 'n onions if you know what i mean.
