That's the problem with every armchair critic. You can make such astute observations yet not even come close to producing a hit song. While I agree that the trends today are mostly meant for shallow consumer consumption, plenty of skill is still required to put a hit song together from start to finish. That's the reason there are plenty of Youtube parodies and wannabes out there, yet only a couple of Max Martins.

However, as a song-writer/producer myself, I refrain from differentiating between writing a composition and the production process. The evolution of pop music has seen the writing taking much consideration of the recording techniques, musical arrangement and even the mixing and mastering. For eg, would the song sound good after radio sound quality degrading etc.

Music should never be created with the current taste of the market in mind. It should be based on interests and creativity.
