@piratebri it's funny, because these days you see a well dressed man walking to the bothel (or to work) "talking to himself," you assume he must have a bluetooth headset crammed in his ear talking on his cell phone lol
We all discover why he is like this later int he series. Seems he is lacking testicular fortitude and can only pray on women because his only weapon to combat men of any effectiveness is by words. He played this very well in this series and was an impressive garnish for the show.
@hc1153 I don't know, but here's a thought: The bible tells you that if a part of your body hurts and can't be healed, you cut it off. Perhaps he's saying he can remove the problem by killing himself.
@Yun351, I thought Hearst's man (Captain?) killed the geologist, Francis Wolcott, too b/c the camera cuts to his mean face before we see Wolcott swinging. But most websites like wiki state that Wolcott hanged himself from humiliation. Of course, we know actor Garret Dillahunt played both Wolcott and earlier Jack McCall. No explanation of why Deadwood used the same actor twice, but he is good!
How is that disturbing exactly ? compared too the way half the world is dying of starvation and the other half is dying of obesity this is not disturbing.
the jack the ripper of the american west. a privileged man more fucked up than anyone can believe, who hides it fairly well... he hides his hatred for all humanity as a sort of upper class snobbery, but beneath all that he's an utterly alone psychopath whose experiments with affection are clinical failures... who can only get joy from killing. apparently this character was abused as a kid but that doesn't excuse anything - the most evil character in the show.
I remember seeing this for the first time and when that music comes in underneath his rant you just know something terrible is going to happen. One thing Deadwood did brilliantly (among many) is approaching doom.
Just realized it. Holy shit. He sure changed his skin like a chameleon. From the droopy eyed weazel gambler into the batshit fuking insane serial killer in the disguise of a distinguished gentleman
He also is playing a gang member role in the new movie The Road. He also had a recurring role on The 4400 and played Jesus on The Book of Daniel. Great actor.
The way he walked to the brothel is how I walk into work every morning.

When Charlie beat the crap out of this guy, I wasn't particularly sad to see it.

The fact that he managed to play both Jack McCall and Francis Wolcott without many even noticing it, proves Dillahunt is a great actor.

@sgtcadaver1234
I guess its because some people would find a triple murder to be disturbing.
Do you think the scene would have worked better if it involved him forcing the 3 girls into unhealthy diets until they died many years later?

@Cha4k Too fucking passive. That happens naturally now anyways.

Ha. She wasn't a very good negotiator.
"Pay me $100,000 now! And then...MORE! Whenever I want! FOREVER!"
"Ermm -- how about I just cut your throat with a straight razor and pay nothing?"

@johnnytastetest i bet you the borg queen she played in star trek would have had better luck "negotiating" with him.
