Passed my son's bedroom only to hear 'music' that sounded like a barrel full of cutlery being rolled down some concrete stairs. Then I hear this.........simply no contest. He said I should stick to my 'old fashioned' music. I agree. Tried to talk to him about what being a mod was all about. He'd rather listen to the latest offering by DJ Jizzy Spoon, or something like that. Mods Mods Mods!!
I keep getting pulled back to this track and I do think that it is now my favourite Jam song.
This was my era and the old Jam songs still make the hairs stand up on my arms.
Maybe one day (but that day isn't today) I'll finally understand why Weller split the band because after about 30 years since the band split a) I can't forgive him and b) I think he's turned into a twat.
This song came out well before I was even born and it's possibly my favourite song ever. I'm a massive fan of The Jam but unfortunately not many people my age even know The Jam which breaks my heart, they are truly one of a kind and should never be forgotten.
Every single time i hear this it still makes me feel the same, as it did when i was a lot younger... it never changes...... Grown up with Weller... well sort of grown up..
One day you'll walk right out of this life, and wonder why you didnt try. You have no idea how significant that line of lyrics is to me in my life! Cheers Paul. ♥ xx
Hi Tes, great to have a browse around your stuff - I wrote the lyrics to this song for an English language poetry homework in 1983 (I think?) I got a B minus!!
With all the shit music that is out today..thats all the kids have to do is open their ears and listen to stuff like this. What has happened to music? It will never be as great as this and I see it only getting worse. Is anyone buying guitars anymore?
Though I was never a major Jam fan (but always thought their singles were excellent), this song made me take notice of them when I first heard it (a Radio One live concert in 1981, I think). It was the style of it as much as anything - I didn't know the words at the time. Lots of people can relate to the lyrics, whatever their situation.
Amazing song... it was one of my coming out songs... 'So why are you frightened - can't you see that it's you. At the moment there's nothing - so there's nothing to loose'.
It's one of those incredible songs that slowly grows on you, so simple and understated, with lyrics so poignant and true - allowing the listener to relate to the words in their own way relevant to their circumstances. After more than 20 years I still know all the words by heart. Brilliant.

In the 80's we had Mods, Rockers, Skinheads, Rude Boys, Punks, New Romantics, Teds, Psychobillys, New wave, Reggae, Hip Hop etc. etc. The chart music and the fashion reflected this, what have the kids of today got !? Manufactured X-Factor / Pop Idol shit and gangsta rap bollocks, - YOU MISSED OUT KIDS !!!!
