its says: To have your smile, I'll give you a pretty ring A pretty ring for having your smile To kiss you I'll give you a cup full of love A cup of love to kiss you For your eyes and for your lips For your smile For your smile I want to give you my nights, ma days and all my dreams for your eyes, for lips and for your smile
First of all thanks for the translation, it really helps. I have been a big fan of Lanois in a while now, but I have never comed across this song before strange enough.
Well I can only say one thing about it and only way to clearly, Damm I love this
Look for the original version by JORANE. She wrote the song and sing it with Lanois on her album. Nice clip there. She's a canadian artist from the province of Quebec (Quebec city) and she is well known internationally. The language is plain French, just like we speak in the province of Quebec.
and the words you are looking for are: I'D give you A NICE RING...une belle bague.
Thank for posting this. Amazing combination of lyrics, voice, and guitar. Can you post more of that "In Session" show? Especially where he wails on the guitar.
this is acadian..due to its very complicated history..and the fact that the acadians are sprend in a wide territory...you should know that there's a lot of acadian accents...i know this, cauz i'm acadian :)
Acoisapublica, I am delighted to 'meet' an Acadian and thank you very much for your reply. The song is so gorgeous and so heartrending. Mr. Lanois is intriguing.
My daughter was born in Toronto, and even though we're stateside (alas!), she's in French immersion, and her (Parisienne) accent is already perfect.
Do you know of any Acadian books (or web sites)? I know it is primarily a spoken language, but you oughta know!
actually, une belle bague would be a ring, I just couldn't make out the word, so the incomplete line is 'for your smile, I want to give you a beautiful ring'.

Give me your heart
Give me your lips
Give me your eyes, give me your smile
For your smile, I will give you a ring, a pretty ring, a pretty ring for your smile.
For your embrace, I will give you a cup of love, a cup of love for your embrace.
For your eyes and for your lips, for your smile.
For your smile, I will give you all of my nights, my days, and all of my dreams.
For your eyes and your lips, for your smile.

OK. Is this Acadian French or Quebequois?
Not really Parisian, and I don't think it's Metis.
Please let me know.

Acadian comes from the Normand patois (Cotentin) and Québécois comes from the Perche dialect.

Here are the lyrics, minus one word which I couldn't make out:
So give me your eyes, your smile
for your smile, I want to give you a beautiful ... (kiss??)
for your embrace, I want to give a cup of love
for your eyes, for your smile, etc.
