  • syd barrett is the best artist of all time (listin and think about it)

  • I used to think Robert Pollard was influenced by the Who, but after hearing Syd, I think differently.

  • Thanks for this, I enjoyed this version of elephant

  • he had early onset schizophrenia...for people who develop schizophrenia, this usually occurs from 18-24 in men...syd was exactly in this age group when his symptoms began to get worse. Obviously drugs didn't help, but they didn't cause his problem - he was already predisposed to get it. It's really sad. He had no choice but to isolate himself from society. He couldn't function in it anymore.

  • What a gem of a song is Milky way.

  • Shine on you crazy Syd Barret! Rest in peace Syd!

  • in an empty way..

  • Pedestrian guitar work - Lose the pick!

  • I think that maybe Syd Barret was very lonely at this point, and feeling the results of his reclusive lifestyle. He also probably thought it far too late to do anything about it, swallowing pride etc,. What a bloody shame and a waste of a singular talent. I enjoy his solo work, as well as his work with The Floyd, but in some of his songs you can feel his loneliness.

  • @sijag68 its what he wanted to be alone

but of course he felt lonley becuse the reson he was alone becuse no one chould truly understand him

  • Happy Birthday, Syd! and thank you PostToastie for the upload.

  • mis tres canciones favoritas del Opel

  • He seemed quite distracted toward the end of the second song

    Prolly Tripping Ballz ^^

  • anyone got the tabs? im 13 and wanna play this because it seems easy

  • Opal. <3

... yeah. it's better than "Opel", and far more meaningful, and maybe was the right title in Syd's intentions.

  • I remember when I bought this lp, 80's. I was so happy, like i,d found a treasure ..

  • @leosky2 : You probably felt that way because you DID find a treasure. An even bigger treasure is Syd Barrett: The Peel Sessions, as well as Syd Barrett: The Radio One Sessions.

  • @hanscarter

thank you for suggesting me more treasures.

  • @leosky2 Good luck finding them. They're both lobg out of print.

  • Happy Syd Barrett's Birthday!

  • brings tears to my eyes!!!!!!!!

  • Syd was a genius and very underated in my opinion. I miss him...

  • très psyché. J'aime

  • Opel is a geat album. Syds one of the few artist i know that made every version of one of his songs incredible. if you like this song check out the madcap laughs, barrett, and opel awsome stuff

  • thank you for posting all these i never really looked into his solo career before this thanks for posting such nice versions of this song

  • You're welcome, thanks for watching!

  • Imagine Syd's home. An old acoustic guitar, dusty under the strings. In the shed.

Drawings on the wall copied onto the wallpaper.

A cup of fungus on the dressing table.

A mirror which was never used reflecting everything back.

Syd's mum in the kitchen cooking his tea. And in the cupboard under the sink ....Fragments of his old clothes,.. dusters.

    Doesn't bear thinking about .....

  • Syd's family insist that he was living a happy life, but there does appear to be a denial that any form of mental ill health affected the man. I suppose it's difficult to judge, there are many examples of glittering careers where artists seemingly achieved their full potential but never found happiness or a sense of satisfaction.

  • Dave is a fine instrumentist, Syd was an inovator a experimentalist a groundbreaker has a musician/songwriter

  • wow i like these. the thirds my favorite.

  • Shine On You Crazy Diamond!

  • I kinda agree. while some of Barrett's solo work is so brutally honest some are full of the child whimsy that Barrett had.Way back before he even did drugs I heard he had a childlike sense of wonderment. Some of his songs convey that, others are painfully raw & some are just what they were - reflections of the times, you can see Floyd in him BECAUSE HE STARTED FLOYD! I dunno he had something weirdly cool going on with his melodies. Wouldn't you miss me? yeah I would and I do. Shine Syd.

  • @mrmarriottsgirl very good comment.

  • I want to mention "Octopus" as a song, that is simple enough to be played just with one acoustic guitar, and still being ingenious and beautiful.

Of course you can´t compare this to the more complex and then absolutely innovative sound of "Dark Side of the moon", which was a milestone in Studio recording - and in a different way ingenious.

  • Hey U are onto somethng I have to say I agree! Rick Wrights keyboards sure would have boosted these tunes.Like Syd too lots of folks dont see how much Wright gave to Floyd - I love Floyd all the eras and Gilmore & Waters definitely were the chairmen but Barrett was just so very unique and Wright was too - I hope they are both out there shining somewhere. Cheers!

  • Creative and all but without the keyboards the songs don't have much power.

  • It's raw, yeah, but it has power, Fuck keyboards. Bass > Keyboards.

  • say what you want but Barrett had an odd almost unsettling way of drawing you in whether you wanted to be or not... there would NEVER have been a Floyd without Syd lining up the planets so to speak so sad that he got pulled into the vortex of the black hole he created in his own Milky Way ... Shine On Syd - to quote Humble Pie AND Floyd - wonder where you could've gone rip....

  • yep

  • does anyone know if syd did most of the guitar parts (like say opel) on his solo albumns or did david gilmour play them?

  • its pure Syd on opel

  • From what I know, Gilmour had almost nothing to do with Barrett. Though Gilmour had nothing but respect for Syd, Syd didnt like him much.

  • In the book a saucer full of secrets,It talks about

Gilmore literally trying to help Sid finish the solo records stuff...Then latter on Gilmore wanted check in on him',make sure hes getting certain royalties, make sure he wasn't getting ripped off..Barrett's mother said it would not be a good idea,''he gets depressed at anything that has to do with his past musical career..Dave and Sid did acid together...

  • they were best friends since childhood

  • Far out.......Makes weed worth smoking again...hahaha!

  • I like how he whales the beggining of the "I'm Tryyyyy" than he ends it normal with the ing, same with every word. Ahead of his time.

  • syd's biggest problem was depression in my opinion

  • I see it that way sometimes, it can be seen in a few other ways too. I feel like it's safe to say depression played some part.

  • Psychosis is a temporary state of madness that can be caused by too much drug use but it will dissipate after the drugs are out of your system and could last weeks not years.

  • I did lots of acid when I was a teen and its a fact that LSD doesn't cause Schizophrenia it just jumpstarts it if someone is predisposed to the illness. The Barret family never wanted to publicly acknowledge that Roger had Mental illness for some reason they would rather everyone think drugs "melted" his brain. Or perhaps it was a magical Gnome that did it.

  • mental illness??? D: how many of you had tried lsd, he knew it, he went to the other side and come back... he was on perfect state of mind ,thats why all of thought that he was mentally ill..... go to the desert go to the milky way an then hear the song its gona have diferent meaning to you ....

  • It's too bad drugs and mental illness were the end of such an amazing talent. Syd was, and still is, one of the most under appreciated artists of our time. He deserves far more recognition. RIP Syd! (And Rick Wright too.)

  • when people with same ideas meet...fuck who and why and where nobody was there of you all...stop comparing

  • yes, as hendrix said, thats where we make our biggest mistakes, that he couldn't compare Muddy Waters with B.B.King that they are both genius in their own aspect or whatever. ha

  • I think syds music sounds best underproduced. Syd in his purest form, it's a masterpiece.

  • I think that if Opel would have been a finished product it would definitively be Syd's best album... all of the demo songs are just awesome! They shine even unpolished... or it could even be that being unpolished suited them well... Barrett's eponym album is the more produced one and is the one I like the less...

  • I agree completely!

Both Madcap and Barrett had great songs but Opel had Birdy hop, Opel, Dollyrocker, Milky Way, Silas Lang and of course, the Superior version of Clowns and Jugglers.

    Its my favourite too!

  • To thebreakinghands :

The fact that you try to compare late PF with early PF / solo barrett work kinda makes me think you are a fool.

I love both the early and the late PF.I like what i am in the mood for , some days are just good for psychedelic and some are good for a more dark , sad kind like the wall.

And others are great for perfection , that day shine on you crazy diamond beams true my radio at top volume

  • Syd, Forever in our hearts.

  • Most definetly!

  • Opel is a little painful to listen to.

It seems so...naked compared to his Floyd work.

Still, such beauty coupled with such depth is a rare sound.

  • This is one of Syds best pieces!

  • Why? To me Syd's solo albums were FAR MORE better than his work with Floyd. Yes, I agree that Syd's work is pure beauty/genius!

  • Syd's mystic is bolstered more by the fact that the post Barrett Floyd's music, was heavily influenced by himself, Syd Barrett was everything to Pink Floyd, Before and after.

  • wenas xoro soi de la parte akta

  • brilliant music

  • Opel Makes me cry every time i heare it!!!

  • so sad to see what he had reduced himself to...you can hear the brilliance, diminished, but there...why the fuck didn't the producer talk him into polishing this stuff up and really putting a shine on it? was he that crazy by this point? probably, I guess

  • I dunno... If you listen to his sister, he wasn't crazy after he got away from London (and the drugs) and went home. I dont think Syd's story is nearly as dramatic as everyone wants to think. Sobering up can be a real eye-opener.

  • IN fact Syd Barrett did recovered pretty well and lived a normal life after his crisis. He became a gardener, coin collector and painter. He couldn't make a musical career anymore tough.

  • This sounds better than anything Gilmour or Waters ever did...pure genius

  • Ok now I think Syd wasn't the only one on drugs.

That comment is beyond ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to an opinion I suppose (sigh).

  • Agreed, actually.

  • LYMBO20006, thats absolutely untrue.

  • Comment removed

  • luv you forever syd, R I P.

  • amazing. his voice sounds like Vince Noir (Mighty Boosh)'s to a tee.

  • No, Vince Noir sounds like Barrett, somewhat purposely me thinks!

  • is it jsut me or does Fat Old Sun sound similar to this?

  • it's just you

  • fine

    be a playerhater like that.

  • I wish you were here syd ...

  • "Take life easy...I mean so easy"

    The greatest.

  • Syd Barret, in Argentina, we loves you, unique genius !!!!

  • "I'm living to find you". could "you" be himself.?

  • man i thought i saw this picture move...

  • uno de los musicos mas grandes de la historia, sin duda quien le dio el sonido a pink floyd

  • i always don´t like the song, when i think of it, but when i press play and the music begins, i can´t move and it captures me.

  • opel.

  • ah..

  • Yeah.

  • wow this is one of my favorite songs of all time... how can you think negatively about it.. i dont get you i guess... even after i sign off it will be in my head..when i think of syd i think of this song and jugband b.

  • well there always are people who don´t like your music. ... i love it too.

  • effervescing elephant it'so funny!

    Rest in peace, syd

  • I'm sure if he had tried to do these songs on another take they would not have come out the same...but that was his version of the blues, pinks, reds, yellows AND grays etc. of life...who knows what happened...only Roger "Syd" Barrett knew..and he's not going to tell...RIP

  • syd is what pink floyd tried to be. so underrated. post toastie, ty for sharing this art you are a youtube hero

  • Thank for the song Opel is one of the best songs i've ever heard. Brings out so many different emotions in one overflowing package!

  • Druming un rectaf prim in consta la öedip uma chingii clasque!

  • Roger Waters (and I love him) be damnned, this is the real Pink Floyd.

  • i love syd berret, when he died it feels like my girlfreind died, RIP SYD

  • barrett

  • sydney roger barrett :)

    like james bond

  • Roger Kieth Barrett?

sorry, i'm just gutted at having lost my hero...I love you Syd..

  • Keith, but yea, Syd was just a nickname that came about because he replaced (and reminded everyone of) a drummer named Sid at a bar or some such thing, wasn't it?

  • Something like that. He had the nickname since age 14

  • I really believe all those crazy stories about Syd now.

  • wish i could have syd play and sing at one of my beer and bbq parties

  • i think he would rather get smashed in the face then go to a beer and bbq party ..

  • Considering he's passed away now... all this conjecture is irrelevant.

  • man, i just love that song milky way!

  • hi, does anybody here have found the song "if it`s in you"?, it is in "the madcap laughs" album...very difficult to find!, please, let me know.

  • I uploaded it a few days ago, did you try a search?

  • thank you, I haven't noticed.

  • Limewire has it

  • sometimes rare as it is; time can not decay sounds we say every day!Plogg!

  • Altough i nvr saw the Legend, im grateful i can still hear his music. Brilliant Stuff

  • i have this album in cd. just.... awesome

  • beautiful...

  • i love all of his works!!

  • where are the Syd Barretts of TODAY?

  • theres a guy named John Norton in San Clemente - he's one of your Syd Barretts of today. I'm gonna post some of his songs soon that he gave me. I was almost his drummer long time ago.

  • MORE LSD TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

  • music from my youth till present and beyond love ya man

  • Shine on man...

  • i love him VERY VERY MUCH

  • THEE BEST!!!

  • thaaa-aaaaa-aaaaaaank---youuuuuuuu

    I looooo----oooooo-----ve Syd.

With a lit------tttttllllleee support in production, what we could have had...

  • The beauty of it is, he did it anyway. Everything Syd produced in my eyes is perfect.

  • i hope some day you get to experience true perfection....

  • What is true perfection? I am sure to you it is something totally different to my opinion of perfection. However, i would never presume to tell you you're idea of Perfection is wrong, it is just different to Mine.

That said, i think it is perfectly Obvious that i have already experienced my idea of perfection, so 'nuf said!

  • Well, come on, it's just one man and a guitar. Compared to Piper, it's extremely raw. I'm not saying that I don't like it. Far from that - just that with some serious production, this stuff could have made Sgt Pepper look like crap.

  • That's exactly what I was thinking.

Just imagine what could have been.

  • Thank you, Syd, you made my day cuz you were and are awesome.

  • What a treat! I listen 2 this albulm eavery friday nite

  • he was not madddd or insain. ITS NOT SYDS PROBLEM IT WAS ROGGER BARRETTS problem. AND NO ONE COULD SEE IT. IT was that every one called him Syd but not by his real name.

  • wish you where her syd, rest in peace

  • Thanx Syd, wish you were here.

  • a fantastic song! image what it could have been with a full band supporting syd.

  • opel is an old car model. the song was supposed to be titled "opal". the strum of the pick is that of a light pick and the fact that syd did many tracks on his telecaster without the amp. listen to "terrapin" on the madcap album. he did have an incredible ear for pitch, unless he had a person tune it for him.

anyway he was ahead of his time and a head in his time. didnt work out.

  • The original album named Opel was relesed in 1988 after many requests made by Syd fans to EMI. I'm touched listening these milestones.

  • Waters and Barret: best floyds!

And maybe it was better for all of them that Syd left the band...

  • R.I.P. Syd, you are missed! :(

  • Thank you.

  • you can really hear his pick flicking against the strings but nice video

  • maaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddd mad mad tripa. RIP*!

  • nice vid

  • you can really hear his pick flicking against the strings

  • wow...milky way...

  • I could listen and listen...

    Syd takes you deep down...

  • great!!

  • sounds like ringo.

  • please.

  • Are these songs from the Barret album?

  • These songs are from a barrett album called OPEL, it is the one in the picture on the video.

  • Thanks for posting this. Never hear some of it before. Good quality sound.

  • when he lived he was ahead of his time true talent is only in few people he had it and used it a god in music and a amazing person who did nothing to much sad he went insane

  • nobody dies , in the book

  • All too true... All too true...

  • trey''ll never ged it

    the totem

  • Syd was really special, their songs are really deep and also cute.RIP SYD
