he had early onset schizophrenia...for people who develop schizophrenia, this usually occurs from 18-24 in men...syd was exactly in this age group when his symptoms began to get worse. Obviously drugs didn't help, but they didn't cause his problem - he was already predisposed to get it. It's really sad. He had no choice but to isolate himself from society. He couldn't function in it anymore.
I think that maybe Syd Barret was very lonely at this point, and feeling the results of his reclusive lifestyle. He also probably thought it far too late to do anything about it, swallowing pride etc,. What a bloody shame and a waste of a singular talent. I enjoy his solo work, as well as his work with The Floyd, but in some of his songs you can feel his loneliness.
@leosky2 : You probably felt that way because you DID find a treasure. An even bigger treasure is Syd Barrett: The Peel Sessions, as well as Syd Barrett: The Radio One Sessions.
Opel is a geat album. Syds one of the few artist i know that made every version of one of his songs incredible. if you like this song check out the madcap laughs, barrett, and opel awsome stuff
Syd's family insist that he was living a happy life, but there does appear to be a denial that any form of mental ill health affected the man. I suppose it's difficult to judge, there are many examples of glittering careers where artists seemingly achieved their full potential but never found happiness or a sense of satisfaction.
I kinda agree. while some of Barrett's solo work is so brutally honest some are full of the child whimsy that Barrett had.Way back before he even did drugs I heard he had a childlike sense of wonderment. Some of his songs convey that, others are painfully raw & some are just what they were - reflections of the times, you can see Floyd in him BECAUSE HE STARTED FLOYD! I dunno he had something weirdly cool going on with his melodies. Wouldn't you miss me? yeah I would and I do. Shine Syd.
I want to mention "Octopus" as a song, that is simple enough to be played just with one acoustic guitar, and still being ingenious and beautiful.
Of course you can´t compare this to the more complex and then absolutely innovative sound of "Dark Side of the moon", which was a milestone in Studio recording - and in a different way ingenious.
Hey U are onto somethng I have to say I agree! Rick Wrights keyboards sure would have boosted these tunes.Like Syd too lots of folks dont see how much Wright gave to Floyd - I love Floyd all the eras and Gilmore & Waters definitely were the chairmen but Barrett was just so very unique and Wright was too - I hope they are both out there shining somewhere. Cheers!
say what you want but Barrett had an odd almost unsettling way of drawing you in whether you wanted to be or not... there would NEVER have been a Floyd without Syd lining up the planets so to speak so sad that he got pulled into the vortex of the black hole he created in his own Milky Way ... Shine On Syd - to quote Humble Pie AND Floyd - wonder where you could've gone rip....
In the book a saucer full of secrets,It talks about
Gilmore literally trying to help Sid finish the solo records stuff...Then latter on Gilmore wanted check in on him',make sure hes getting certain royalties, make sure he wasn't getting ripped off..Barrett's mother said it would not be a good idea,''he gets depressed at anything that has to do with his past musical career..Dave and Sid did acid together...
Psychosis is a temporary state of madness that can be caused by too much drug use but it will dissipate after the drugs are out of your system and could last weeks not years.
I did lots of acid when I was a teen and its a fact that LSD doesn't cause Schizophrenia it just jumpstarts it if someone is predisposed to the illness. The Barret family never wanted to publicly acknowledge that Roger had Mental illness for some reason they would rather everyone think drugs "melted" his brain. Or perhaps it was a magical Gnome that did it.
mental illness??? D: how many of you had tried lsd, he knew it, he went to the other side and come back... he was on perfect state of mind ,thats why all of thought that he was mentally ill..... go to the desert go to the milky way an then hear the song its gona have diferent meaning to you ....
It's too bad drugs and mental illness were the end of such an amazing talent. Syd was, and still is, one of the most under appreciated artists of our time. He deserves far more recognition. RIP Syd! (And Rick Wright too.)
yes, as hendrix said, thats where we make our biggest mistakes, that he couldn't compare Muddy Waters with B.B.King that they are both genius in their own aspect or whatever. ha
I think that if Opel would have been a finished product it would definitively be Syd's best album... all of the demo songs are just awesome! They shine even unpolished... or it could even be that being unpolished suited them well... Barrett's eponym album is the more produced one and is the one I like the less...
Both Madcap and Barrett had great songs but Opel had Birdy hop, Opel, Dollyrocker, Milky Way, Silas Lang and of course, the Superior version of Clowns and Jugglers.
The fact that you try to compare late PF with early PF / solo barrett work kinda makes me think you are a fool.
I love both the early and the late PF.I like what i am in the mood for , some days are just good for psychedelic and some are good for a more dark , sad kind like the wall.
And others are great for perfection , that day shine on you crazy diamond beams true my radio at top volume
Syd's mystic is bolstered more by the fact that the post Barrett Floyd's music, was heavily influenced by himself, Syd Barrett was everything to Pink Floyd, Before and after.
so sad to see what he had reduced himself to...you can hear the brilliance, diminished, but there...why the fuck didn't the producer talk him into polishing this stuff up and really putting a shine on it? was he that crazy by this point? probably, I guess
I dunno... If you listen to his sister, he wasn't crazy after he got away from London (and the drugs) and went home. I dont think Syd's story is nearly as dramatic as everyone wants to think. Sobering up can be a real eye-opener.
IN fact Syd Barrett did recovered pretty well and lived a normal life after his crisis. He became a gardener, coin collector and painter. He couldn't make a musical career anymore tough.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The thing is that Floyd's original producer refused to do Syd's solo albums, the other one actually gave up Syd and EMI didn't want to provide another one, so the task was left to David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, who were unexperienced and were working in their own records by then.
But the main reason this sounds crappy is because SYD was acting irrationally and wasted too much studio hours. He resulted to be worst in the studio than live after his crisis.
wow this is one of my favorite songs of all time... how can you think negatively about it.. i dont get you i guess... even after i sign off it will be in my head..when i think of syd i think of this song and jugband b.
I'm sure if he had tried to do these songs on another take they would not have come out the same...but that was his version of the blues, pinks, reds, yellows AND grays etc. of life...who knows what happened...only Roger "Syd" Barrett knew..and he's not going to tell...RIP
Keith, but yea, Syd was just a nickname that came about because he replaced (and reminded everyone of) a drummer named Sid at a bar or some such thing, wasn't it?

opel is an old car model. the song was supposed to be titled "opal". the strum of the pick is that of a light pick and the fact that syd did many tracks on his telecaster without the amp. listen to "terrapin" on the madcap album. he did have an incredible ear for pitch, unless he had a person tune it for him.
anyway he was ahead of his time and a head in his time. didnt work out.
when he lived he was ahead of his time true talent is only in few people he had it and used it a god in music and a amazing person who did nothing to much sad he went insane

Imagine Syd's home. An old acoustic guitar, dusty under the strings. In the shed.
Drawings on the wall copied onto the wallpaper.
A cup of fungus on the dressing table.
A mirror which was never used reflecting everything back.
Syd's mum in the kitchen cooking his tea. And in the cupboard under the sink ....Fragments of his old clothes,.. dusters.
Doesn't bear thinking about .....

opel is an old car model. the song was supposed to be titled "opal". the strum of the pick is that of a light pick and the fact that syd did many tracks on his telecaster without the amp. listen to "terrapin" on the madcap album. he did have an incredible ear for pitch, unless he had a person tune it for him.
anyway he was ahead of his time and a head in his time. didnt work out.

The original album named Opel was relesed in 1988 after many requests made by Syd fans to EMI. I'm touched listening these milestones.

Waters and Barret: best floyds!
And maybe it was better for all of them that Syd left the band...
