  • Check out the beautiful south's version

  • Is that Cindy Birdsong on the left?

  • @MignonDunne Yes. Long before she replaced Florence Ballard in the Supremes.

  • That's Patty La belle I went to school with Nona she took off the last half of the year to tour. Nona and I are still friends I met Patti through Nona but just a short hello. Nona and I were friends from 7th grade to 12th and my father worked with her mother...This is Patti singing.

  • I was in grade school, bought the record. This was Patti LaBelle and you can hear her voice. Has anyone ever heard of the word "Youth" she was young. So if I was about 13 or so, she may have been 17....a child. Everyone that knew the record and knows Patti knew that she started with this song. I loved it by the way. So cute! I can still see my sisters and I dancing on this!

  • I don't care who sang it....thanks for uploading it and bringing me back to my youth.

    Those WERE the days kids.

  • No this song was recorded by a group called the Starlets, but they were conned and never received credit for it.

  • ... welche unglaubliche schätze es gibt... :D

wir sind so reich und wissen es manchmal garnicht...

  • We did this song and (Academy Awards) in Beehive the 60's musical! Absolutely loved it! She sounds more like Frankie Lymon on this song!

  • Wat's up with people saying that wasn't Patti signing the lead part. That's her all the way, her voice is just not matured. If you are a real fan of Patti then you will recognized a particular sound she has in her voice no matter what age she is. Anyway THAT"S PATTI!!!!!!!

  • I love how girls looke in those days - so chaste. Patty LaBelle is a "Diva" of American R&B. Whoever is singing this has done a wonderful job, but I'm sure Patty could cover as well. After all the song was a cover from the 1940's anyway. This is not an original song, it is just a restyling and a very, very good one.

  • @clarkewi That is Patti singing the lead. She sounded a little different way back then but that's her.

  • This is the Starlets' recording. It was on American Bandstand with Patsy Holt (later known as Patti LaBelle) lip syncing. All of the Starlets won $5000 from the ensuing lawsuit. (Chicago Reader, 7/14/11). Elisa

  • patti labelle was part of the bluebelles. I went to high school with a member of the Bluebelles and Patti lives near my sister on the Main Line outside of Philly.

  • @PaleRider81 That is Patti LaBelle singing lead, she just sounds very different at this age. Her voice was not matured at this point, but it is her.

  • She claimed in her autobiography that another girl group had recorded it under the name of the Bluebells and the guy brought them in to promote it. I think they recorded a version too, but I'm not sure. Any way the girls ended up getting sued over it.

  • @Worme95 Cindy Birdsong, in an interview, stated the song was already on the radio but the group (The Starlets) couldn't go out and promote it because the lead singer shot her husband! A promoter asked the Bluebelles if they could sing it the same way (which they did) and the rest is history. Cindy says that, to this day, she can't tell the two versions apart.

  • @Drillin4Oil It sounded like it was a mess. I never heard that story. wow.

  • I see thats Cindy Birdsong across from Patti--the same Cindy who dropped out of the group to become a "SUPREME" !!

  • I see thats Cindy Birdsong across from Patti--the same Cindy who dropped out of the group to become a "SUPREME" !!

  • @MrKlondike33 --HAD TO SAY IT TWICE!!

  • This is definitly not Patti @ her finest NOT BY A LOOOOOG SHOT! This song was originally recorded as a tear jearking blues classic sung by Carmen McRea or Ruth Brown. The Ruth brown version is posted here on youtube PLEEEEEEZE listen to it and you will agree that whoever changed this classic blues GEM into a rock-n-roll joint totally RUINED it!

  • just love it

i mean i really love this song

  • Awesome.

  • When I first heard this song as a child, I died laughing! Patti sounded like an insect! This isnt that same recording, but its delightful nonetheless...

  • This is not patti & the bluebelles...it is sung by a group called the starletes

  • off the subject, but does anyone remember a song from the 60s. Up beat that went basically..............lalalalalalala she's my hearts desire? moe st of the song was just lalas'. We are going nuts?

    I am fpwyanks@yahoo.com

  • I used to have the 45 of this song, actually sung by Patti and the Bluebelles, summer of '62, so I know Patti recorded it, it was not this posted song, and it was fabulous!

  • @calwaite I grew up going to see Patti, Nona and Sarah in Brooklyn, New York! They were great on stage back in those days!

  • classic Philadelphia oldie

  • I have the original 45, and it is VERY different than this re-recording. Same arrangement, but it's definitely Patti, not this imposter! Anyway, still glad you have this posted at all! Thanks.

  • wow, interesting info, i always thought this was Patti and the Bluebells all these years, used to listen to this on my transistor radio in Chicago, on WLS radio, and the DJs introduced it as Patti and girls....Dick Biondi was the night time DJ then....

still, a very cool song regardless...

  • mystery is right. patti claims ignorance in her autobiography about the scandal. so, we may never know what exactly happened. one thing is true, the record biz can be a shady, shady biz.

  • I wonder if Patti Labelle or the Bluebelles ever listen to this song. It's a classic. Thanks ever so much for posting.

  • This was another Monster Hit in NYC.

Murray The K on 1010 WINS loved this one, played it a lot.

    .

  • .

Translation - I went on drugs after the sad breakup, now its too late for me.

This is perfect Doo Wop Rock and Roll.

    .

  • @mikemikeyf i'm so dumb! i never even realized that's exactly what they're saying!

  • Good song I'm glad u didn't take it down, you're right it's not patti, I had heard that story years ago.. good stuff!

  • Good way of putting it...love it.

  • Interesting so Patti did the concerts but never cut the record? I loved that song back in the 60s at the dances. The words were so crazy, that's part of it.

  • BTW, is anyone able to post the Starlets' hit that WAS credited to them, "Better Tell Him No"?

  • Yes, please don't remove this. Whoever did this, it's too good a record.

  • Technically, the label credit is to just The Blue-Belles

  • Patti sang this song at my high school in 1965. John Bartram High in SW Philly.

  • I think this a remake by Patti back in the day, But it was really a song by the Starletts that was played on the radio in it's day ! under the name of P. & Bluebelles !

  • Cindy looks so cute! For some reason this song always makes me think of New Year's Eve. And that is today, so Happy New Year Everybody! :D

  • patti is on the left cindy is the right sara at the top and nona at the bottom

  • To clmcid14, Patti is on the right Cindy is on the left ! ! !

  • can anyone tell me which is which??

  • Look at Cindy, Nona and Sarah. This picture is priceless

  • i'm not sure who that is, but it's not patti singing lead.

  • it is her. She was a teenager. You gotta listen to this with a 60's mentality.

  • that is not patti labelle singing. supposedly there were two groups who sang this song around that time and it must be them. i've heard other early recordings of the bluebelles and it sounds like patti now just much younger. but this ain't it.

  • A bit of old school trivia... truth be told Patti & the girls never recorded this song. It was recorded by a group from Chicago name The Starletts but they were under contract to a Chicago label but recorded this song one night after a show in Philadelphia for the guy who would become Patti Labelles Managed - he released the record under the guise of The Bluebelles because legally he could not release it under The Starletts - That why is doesnt sould like Patti - It's not her

  • mystkpizza thanks for the info and corrections! Music business is really awkward sometimes.I've found this song on the Bluebelles' cd release, stating it's their unreleased stereo version of the song...well it seems like it isn't. Sorry for that, I'll remove the video shortly.I care for music correctness too.

  • PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT remove this from the list - its the only version and even thou technically it IS NOT THE BLUEBELLES it is the BLUEBELLES if you know what I mean.

  • Okay,I won't remove the vid. :) BTW,thanks again for the info/history corrections.Cheers!

  • @mystkpizza Actually Patti and the Bluebelles did record a version of this song. We just had a brief discussion about it over at Spectropop. The version they recorded was issued on a Sweethearts of the Apollo LP with dubbed in live crowd sounds. It was much faster and shorter (coming in at 2 minutes). It was released without the crowd sounds on a cassette in the 80s or 90s. Both versions are quite nice.

  • @mystkpizza I have this version, and I also have Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles version with Patti on the lead and Cindy, Nona and Sarah on background and I also have a rare version with Sarah Dash on lead and Patti, Cindy and Nona on background, I will sort them out for you guys and upload them for you, I have tons of Bluebelles stuff, as I am a huge Cindy Birdsong fan and she is also a dear friend of mine, so I will upload them as soon as I can. xxxx

  • @mystkpizza Hi guy, You got that right !
