  • Dude awesome; PLEASE tell me how did you do those titles?

  • WOW! Super Rig ya got there brother. Very nice indeed.

  • @rickeyracer44 Thanks mate

  • Nice setup, I like the HTPC to

    I subscribed

  • @RicoStanfield Q1: Yep the Norco comes with the backplane. Q2: The RAID card has SAS ports only, no SATA ports. You can have 1 to 4 hard drives connected via a single SAS cable. So there's one cable for every row of HDDs in the case. The whole point is cable management and if you would prefer to only work with SATA, then check out the Norco RPC-4020. Pic here: goo (dot) gl (slash) o0xq2 Q3: Windows Home Server (modified w2k3), but would prefer FreeNAS and will be migrating one day soon.

  • Nevermind! You did mention the PSU, it was blocked by the play bar in the video =)

  • I am building the exact same thing, with some differences :

    - not inexpensive HD's, they'll cost me but inexpensive disks can be marked 'bad' by the raid card just because they didn't answer quick enough. That means a disk fail -> rebuild -> extra stress on the other disks -> higher chance of failing a second disk

    - don't say that's not true, it is. I did extensive research AND I had it happen to my own 11TB raid 5 server. 2 disks failed ... byebye. You don't want that to happen I promise =)

  • - I am looking at a Highpoint card because the specs on their site list it to be working perfectly with the WD raid edition drives I'll use. I'll have a look at this Areca card too though

    - this time, no raid 5, I'm going for 6

After that's done. I'll rebuild my old 11TB server (which does hold cheap drives) and use that one as backup for the most important data, so the raid6 can die and I'll still have the most important data.

  • I'll use Linux as OS on all hosts (also HTPC, which I still have but obviously isn't streaming now =P) So: fileserver -> HTPC -> amplifier via HDMI -> surround + LED tv. Much like you =)

You didn't mention the OS used on the fileserver. And I'd also like to know which Antec PSU that is.

It doesn't sound loud int his video. I was afraid of that as I've read it was noisy a few times. What's your opinion? Nice work, especially on the cables =)

  • @trudyandgeorge

cool video, now I want to make a 20tb server! lol I saw the other video as well about the home theater pc. I understand you are using MediaPortal Client for the htpc. What operating system are you using for the server? Cheers

  • Isn't it 4 drives per SAS cable? Not 5?

  • @jimmayl1 Indeed it is, my mistake.

  • Also, what codecs are you using in media portal to play your HD and SD content? Thanks again.

  • @antsrealm I use "FFDShow tryouts", however there's a plugin called "SaF" which takes care of all your codec needs.

  • Hi, where do you get your bluray rips? Torrents? If so what trackers do you recommend? I've been looking for a good private tracker for downloading HD movies. Thanks.

  • I want to know which Raid/HBA card you used for this build?

  • @sohlican The RAID card is an "Areca ARC-1280ML-2G" The 2G just means it comes with 2GB of RAM which you can take out or change if you like. (btw, it was in the first few frames of the video - 0:00 )

  • @trudyandgeorge

Can I have a list of the parts

  • Nice cable management on a case that's not cable friendly

  • @katsudon2 Thanks. Here's a vid of this case's bigger brother, which has an additional five drive bays. The guy just quickly knocked it together so there's no cable management done yet: watch?v=-rgFipoPnhU

  • What else are you using this beast for besides htpc goodness?

  • @HoustonTechNet 1/2: Not much. It's a torrent server, NAS, HTPC-backend (as you know), and automated backup/restore server. The OS is "Windows Home Server" which is really Windows 2003 service pack 2, with some noob-friendly Microsoft software to do server-tasks, like automate backups of LAN-connected Windows computers. Windows only of course, it won't backup any Linux box. Honestly, I'm not impressed with it. If I were starting out again, I would totally use FreeNAS. I'm ..continued...

  • @HoustonTechNet 2/2: I'm looking to change over from WHS to FreeNAS, however MediaPortal is Windows-only, so that will have to be replaced with "MythTV"; the major HTPC project under Linux. "MythBackend" is the name of the server software, in a server/client setup with Myth, and I've read that MythBackend doesn't work on FreeBSD, -the distro used for FreeNAS. I could go with a myth-friendly distro, and manually setup all the FreeNAS stuff like FTP, shares etc ..Still thinking about it though.

  • Lets check it ouuuuuuuuuuut!!!!

    Nice effects with the fonts!!

  • @u3020650 Its all free!!!!

  • Great stuff George
