It's neither "toy" nor "red" - the German word is 'Luftballon' and 'Luft' just means 'air'. So by saying 'Luftballon' German people just mean the same thing like the English with 'ballon' do.

But that sounds strange in English, because we refer to the ones for parties etc just as balloons. I may be wrong, I can't remember where I heard this, but either way, the assorted colours should be fine =D
