great picking uncle Don...Ralph want playing Don`s banjo.... uncle Don never had an upside down pick guard?? arm rest either...That was arm rest you talking about... Never knew they made an pick guard for a banjo....lmao.......
Just to imform you, BlueGrass was actualy music developed by Irish/scotch immagrints using tradtional music from there home countrys mixed with influences from the black music at the time. So it was just picked up by American locals and everyone played it together. Its just associated with America now as thats were it was mastered.
The day Ralph Stanley passes away will be a dark dark day on this earth. He is a true icon of bluegrass and I play a guitar just like his late brother carter. My love to the Stanley Brothers!!
thank you for posting.......the two best in the world playing together.....what else can you ask for....I feel like crying it's so beautiful.......thank you
Oh wow, I'm glad someone brought that up. It was also one of my favorites. I emailed the director of the ralph stanley museum hoping he knew what it was part of but he wasnt aware of it. I also have asked around other members here who have posted similar content or are don reno specialists but have gotten no response. It looks like this video has the same background at the end as was used in that other video. Does anyone know what this is from? I would pay for that gloryland video.. :-(
Notice that they swapped banjos in this video. Ralph is picking Don's '34 Gibson archtop with large pickguard and Don is picking Ralph's '27 Gibson archtop with wreath inlay.
Ralph's banjo has "Wreath" inlay & a fiddle-shaped peghead. Don's banjo has "Flying Eagle" inlay and "turtle foot" peghead(another Gibson style cut). If you look closely at the banjo Ralph is picking, you'll notice a white pickguard, which is distinctively Don Reno's banjo. Ralph did not have one of these pickguards, netiher did many other banjo players.
I still can't see it well enough to make out anything on the banjo Ralph's playing. The one Don has is definitely not "Ol Nellie." I cannot see the inlay enough to tell if it's Ralph's or another one of Don's banjos. Does anybody know where I could see a little cleaner version of this?
Ralph is picking Reno's banjo in this video. Look closely and you'll see the mounting bracket for the pick guard at the 6 o'clock position of the banjo head.
Where on earth did this come from??? Classic!

How can you tell? I wouldn't be able to tell them apart if it wasn't for Ralph's hat.
