The Prop 8 issue has been done to death. As a straignt male, I'm all for the GLBT community maintaining their right to happiness, as with any American. Yet the GLBT community still wants to consider themselves a minority group.

Please do note that there is a difference between people who happen to be Mormons doing something, and the LDS Church doing it.
The LDS Church did NOT funnel money into Proposition 8. Many California Mormons joined forces with other right-wing organizations such as the American Family Association (Wildmon), Focus on the Family (Dobson), Prison Fellowship, Family Research Council, Free Congress Foundation, Southern Baptist Convention, American Values, and US Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Mormon supporters included some wealthy people and even corporations such as Marriott Hotels, but that also is not the LDS Church itself.
Those Mormons who supported Proposition 8 should've thought it through a bit more. It's aimed EVERY BIT as much at THEM as it is at the GLBT community!
While the mainstream LDS faith has not done polygamy in over a century, they do still BELIEVE that God will command or revoke it as He sees fit.
Prop 8 et al define marriage as between *A* mAn and *A* womAn!
As such, these fly in the face of LDS doctrine! The LDS Twelfth Article of Faith requires them to submit to the civil authority of whatever nation they live in, and to obey the law of the land. Passing such laws means that if (as they believe) God ever chose to re-establish polygamy by revelation through the LDS Prophet, they would have to choose between violating that new revelation or violating the Twelfth Article of Faith!
One more thing: those other organizations I mentioned all express support for the LDS right now because of their members' support of Prop. 8, but most of them have in the past — the RECENT past, even — been ANTI-LDS. Some of them VEHEMENTLY so. And many of them, even now, would tell you if asked point-blank that the LDS are NOT Christians (technically, they are — the word "Christian" means anyone who believes in Jesus as the Christ).
I think you're looking at it a bit skewed. Would religion (a belief system) be required if people were so reasonable? Religion goes beyong killing and stealing. It's an attempt to understand how to live a better life. A lot of people both non-religious and religious have a warped viewed. I don't have a problem with civil unions as along as it's across the board. But I do have a problem with radically redefining marriage.

Marriage existed to LEGITIMIZE HEIRS, and to form ALLIANCES. Love didn't even enter the picture.
Marriage for romantic love came about in Western Civilization during the Middle Ages. In Eastern civilizations, it's a lot more recent than that. Japan for instance had NO tradition of romantic love until the late 20th Century, when the DeBeers diamond cartel started a massive advertising campaign there to push the concept of diamond engagement rings onto a whole new market.
Prior to that, nearly all marriages were ARRANGED. Nearly all BIBLE marriages were arranged.
It's defined as we know it today in this country especially. And there is a reason why is has been defined that way through generations. The concept has developed into what it is today but always identify the unique bond of a man and woman. We can debate history forever. The concept of marriage is between a man and woman. You can find another word if you would like.
In the Bible ALONE, there are at least eight different types of marriage, ALL endorsed by God Himself, NONE of which are definitively of a man and a woman marrying for love. These include:
• Arranged one-on-one marriages
• Polygynous (multiple-wives) marriages (Jacob and Leah and Rachel, both arranged), David (God outright says that HE GAVE David his master Saul's WIVES [plural] unto his bosom! David sinned in taking ANOTHER MAN's wife through MURDER), Solomon, etc.
• Wives giving "maidservants" (slaves) to their husbands as surrogate mothers (Leah and Rachel's slaves, Abraham and Hagar [Sarah's slave], etc.)
• Rapists marrying their victims after the fact (with said victims having no say in the matter).
• Virgin female PoWs (mostly young girls) forced to marry their conquerers after ALL males (old men down to newborns) and non-virgin females were massacred (Numbers 31, et al).
• Concubines (David had many, and Solomon had 300!)
• Levirate marriages, in which the brother of a married but childless deceased man is REQUIRED to take his brother's widow(s) as wives (even if he's already married himself), specifically to generate heirs for the dead brother (the children that result from this type of marriage were legally considered to be the dead brother's offspring and heirs). God once STRUCK A MAN *DEAD* for *NOT* DOING THIS (Onan — contrary to popular belief, his sin was NOT masturbation, but COITUS INTERRUPTUS).
In addition, there IS an example that DOES appear to be between two people who actually LOVE each other, spiritually and physically.
The catch? They're BOTH MALE! Yes, the ONLY one for LOVE is a *SAME-SEX* MARRIAGE!!

But Hebrew civilization was not Western civilization. The only reason it has any connection to us is because of Constantine adopting Pauline Christianity.
That said, WESTERN Civilization had a long history of SAME-SEX relationships, both Greek and Roman. Both actual history and in myth (e.g. Ganymede).
I will grant you, though, that perhaps we need another name. "Marriage" has been co-opted by the churches for so long in our culture that we can just let them have it, and get government out of the marriage business ENTIRELY.
So, instead, we have civil partnership contracts. These are the ONLY relationships that would have ANY *LEGAL* STATUS or benefits of ANY legal kind. Filing taxes jointly, legal heirs, visitation, etc. would all be for these and these ALONE.
Any reasonably small number of consenting adults of any gender can enter into such a contract for any stated period of time, or, if all parties involved so choose, "until death us do part" or even "for time and all eternity" as the Mormons do in their temples.
Then churches can have "marriage," which would be stripped of ALL LEGAL STATUS AND BENEFIT, and which would be recognized ONLY by the respective churches. They can marry or forbid whomever they want.
THERE's your REAL threat to "traditional" marriage!
Solve THAT one FIRST, and THEN you can afford to waste time worrying about who should be allowed to get married to whom!
One last thing: be careful what you wish for. In the rush to ban same-sex marriage, Texas passed a Constitutional Amendment similar to Prop 8 and several other Amendments in other States. Unfortunately, they were sloppy in its wording.
Result: ALL marriage is now unconstitutional and non-recognizable in the State of Texas!

Marriage came into existence in the first place because babies come out of women, not men, and they didn't know about chromosomes and DNA.
So men needed a way to know whose children were theirs. Women knew because the kids came out of them. But men had NO WAY of knowing. There were no DNA paternity tests back then.
Marriage was a way of saying that THIS child is my legitimate heir, and THAT child is not.

Marriage for romantic love came about in Western Civilization during the Middle Ages. In Eastern civilizations, it's a lot more recent than that. Japan for instance had NO tradition of romantic love until the late 20th Century, when the DeBeers diamond cartel started a massive advertising campaign there to push the concept of diamond engagement rings onto a whole new market.
Prior to that, nearly all marriages were ARRANGED. Nearly all BIBLE marriages were arranged.

But Hebrew civilization was not Western civilization. The only reason it has any connection to us is because of Constantine adopting Pauline Christianity.

I will grant you, though, that perhaps we need another name. "Marriage" has been co-opted by the churches for so long in our culture that we can just let them have it, and get government out of the marriage business ENTIRELY.

Money rights is certainly part of equal rights, so your argument is kinda flimsy. WTF? Gay people are entitled to full equal rights just as heterosexual people, and jsut because there's a long history of discrimination doesn't make it right. It doesn't matter what the "reasons" are to want the right to be married, whether it's love OR money. Nobody is questioning YOUR reasons. It also makes no difference what your "religion" says about homosexuality, in this country we SEPARATE Church and State in order to prevent this very type of conflict. Gays have spun this into a moral/rights issue when in fact its about money and acceptance. No one is saying dont be gay that is your right to do with your vessel as you please. At this point you want to the government to condone your activity. Why Money! Polygamy is not against the Bible yet it is outlawed. Do polygamist still get married?
