not a mamushi. like the comments below said, mamushi have a big fat triangular head, and the body is a funky diamond-ish camp pattern. you are looking at an aodaisho.
check out jimuguri, aodaisho, yamakagashi, mamushi, and habu. learn the differences. jimuguri are pretty cute. also the colors of baby aodaisho LOOK like mamushi when very young.
Are you sure that was a mamushi? The ones I saw were a lot fatter and not as long. Plus, they did not seem to be afraid of me AT ALL. I've almost stepped on them on more than one occassion.
I just walked the 88kasho too :) On the way to Unpenji temple, I encountered 5 of them in the span of 2 hours! They apparently love to come out on the asphalt roads during the late evenings to warm their bodies.
I don't mind snakes, I like 'em (but I give them their distance, and I respect 'em). I still haven't seen one of these here in Japan:( Closest I've come to seeing a poisonous snake here in Japan is the poor habu snakes stuffed in the sake bottles.
I do not like that and I cannot believe Japanese people are okay with doing that to those poor things! Must be an Okinawa touristy thing:)
