He was a cold hearted smuggler who only cared for himself and was cold blooded enough to shoot a man down instead of sit and debate with him. That was the impression that scene is supposed to give. Thus making his slow turn to favoring the rebellion and putting his friends first more significant as the character progressed in the series. Changing it so Greedo shoots first makes Han seem less of a bad ass and soft.

Im not against change, but I just disagree with this one in particular. After the change I for one saw an obvious (or at least i think it is) gap in is character progression from outlaw to rebel sympathizer. It was just changed to make him more likable i guess. But they never say what he is smuggling. Another discussion though..
