Auron does use a big hefty sword but it's also a katana type sword. It's hard to exactly pull off Auron's sword style. Unless you count his celestial weapon masamune, which then of course you can make him use a claymore type.

It's all about stylization. Yes, in reality, Auron wields pretty damn huge swords, but in the game, they're stylized katanas. His "job" in FFX is the Samurai, and his CW is the Masamune. That's why the guy picked Mitsu's style.
